    I hate when either:
    i) Hockey media outlets bring up one team getting him - for some (rigged) reason that benefits the NHL - simply for sake of argument/discussion/conversation, or
ii) Because the media outlet is simply uneducated enough to know what a rig-proof system is in place. (Honestly -when I read the "lottery" article, people discuss only the odds and rarely the "(mechanical, mathematical) system". This tells a lot)

The NHL's current system of 14 numerical balls producing 1001 permutations of 4-number sequences, assigned randomly to the 16 qualifying teams (to make up the 100% of 1000 combinations) is... not... riggable.
    It's just not.

If somebody tried... it would leak.
Somebody would have to want to consider it from management... and somehow that would have to trickle down through engineers who can create some system of randomly bounced/floated balls and a suction device that's going to avoid or grab one specific team's ball numbers.
It's too much. Anybody that thinks this is possible might as well also subscribe to the earth being flat. Come.On.

Unfortunately, Chicago & Arizona (the management losers of the NHL universe) are going to have their odds to get Bedard and might get him.
And that'll be absolutely terrible to see Bedard have to wear either of those jerseys - because both organizations are disasters right now (not because of fanbase or players or location).

With lotteries, a great move by any media-discussion outlet is to pose some theory on why one team WILL land Bedard.
IF it happens... you look like an absolute genius and can pat-your-back with no valid reason.
And if it doesn't happen... you say... "Well... it's a lottery after all".

Reminds me of two sub-stories I like to tell to get ridiculousness of prediction powers to the non-math-folk.

The first - I went to Vegas once. This guy comes up to me, out of nowhere, while I'm sitting in the general seating of a Casino's sports room with 100s of screens. He sidles up to me and says "Hey - you probably don't bet horses... but I want you to watch the #4 horse in this race over here (points to screen)... he's not favored to win... but he's going to. Just watch. If he does - let me know if you are interested in my expertise on a small cut of bets. I'll talk to you after." And he leaves. I don't think much of it at the time. But I'm curious. Always good to check out somebody with intel. I watch the horse race. Horse #4 doesn't win, place or whatever. He doesn't do shit. I look around and find the guy that was so proud of telling me his prediction. He's walking over to some other guy in a chair. Puts his thumb up "Thumbs up" and starts talking with some other random guy like me - and they talk... and nod heads...

The other story - I used to play men's league hockey with this guy. He tells us (the teammates) that he got his wife on board with trying to conceive a 2nd-kid by using "doggy style" method. He said his wife wanted a girl and there is studies that show there is a slightly improved likelihood of getting her a daughter with that position due to Yada, Yada, Yada. They get pregnant. They have a girl. Genius. (and... some of you will know the tone I mean there when I type "Genius".)

So... maybe let's just wait for the lottery.
One can hope (I do) that some teams win and some teams don't...
But it's pure mathematical chance - and it's real and without hope of alteration.

Do teams know their randomly assigned numbers before the drawing?

    EDIT: Oh there's a link.

You make it sound like a challenge to figure out how they can rig it

At least with Chicago's last win that lowers their odds by a good margin...

Before talking to you, perhaps he talked to three other guys, telling them that they were to watch the #1, #2, and #3 horses, respectively. And after you he gave the same line to others with respect to horses 5 through 8. He hits on one, and then perhaps he's got a customer.

It's like those dial in 800 numbers from sports bettors years ago where they give you one free pick for Monday Night Football. Half the callers get a recorded prediction of Team 1 to win, the other half get Team 2. Then they hope that the 50% of callers who got the "right" prediction come back for more...

I've seen this with basketball, and it's often good, because they discuss the various teams that might reasonably get the first pick. It's even better when there are different needs, and no clear cut #1. That said, it needs to be analysis of the pick, and how it will shape the team.

The other story - I used to play men's league hockey with this guy. He tells us (the teammates) that he got his wife on board with trying to conceive a 2nd-kid by using "doggy style" method. For this one I am good. If the wife wants a girl, and they try using that specific position repeatedly, and it gets the desired result, they are all happy with the result. And hopefully during the work to get the result.

I'll be happy if anyone but Anaheim or Chicago win this. But really....anyone but Chicago. I'll be furious if they win.

Detroit deserves a lottery boost for once.

I will find a way to cheer for Bedard even if he lands on a team I don't particularly like. Why do I feel like the Blackhawks will get him because so many people don't want it to happen. Hope it's a team I don't have any strong feelings about like San Jose or Anaheim.

You're not the only one with that feeling (about CHI winning the sweepstakes)...
