Default Re: Dobber Pro Wales 2022-23

Going into the draft, I knew a couple things. First, I've always had the most success when having steady goaltending. So I wanted to grab 2 goalies with my first 4 picks and then maybe either a backup or a lower end starter later in the draft. Second, I was fine with punting a category if the draft led me there. Third, high-volume shooters are usually the best type of picks. Fourth, I was fine with only grabbing a couple of Ds in the early-middle rounds and then fill the rest later if it meant getting more elite forwards.

Drafting 5th wasn't great. There's a clear top 4 in my mind (McDavid, Draisaitl, Matthews and MacKinnon) and while I love Kaprizov and Makar, I was thinking I might go G at 5.

    1. (5) Igor Shesterkin (NYR - G) - As the top 4 picks went as expected, I did go G with Shesterkin. As W and GAA are two of the three stats, he gives me a big edge there. Happy to have him and hoping to get elite forwards with my next two picks.

    2. (20) Kyle Connor (Wpg - LW) - Ecstatic to grab Connor with the 20th pick. I feel like he's a top 10 pick if he can manage a 90-point pace again. The shots are elite and he'll produce a lot of PPP.

    3. (29) Timo Meier (SJ - LW,RW) - For some reason, there's a small D run between my picks so Meier, who I expected to be picked, was still there. Even if he only produces 70 points, if he keeps his shot and hits pace from last year, he's a top-15 player in this format. So very happy to have him. I'm now expecting to grab a G with my next pick.

    4. (44) Patrick Kane (Chi - RW) - Huge goalie run after my Meier pick (5 of 6 picks are G) but when it gets to my pick, there's still 3 goalies I still like so I'm happy to pick one. But I then notice P. Kane is still available. I know I'm clearly in the minority here but I feel he's being WAY undervalued in fantasy this year. Yes, his team sucks, but he's still Patrick Kane. He'll get his points, he'll get his shots, he'll get his PPPs. Can't pass him up here so I hope one of the Gs falls to my next pick.

    5. (53) Connor Hellebuyck (Wpg - G) - Demko and Jarry get picked but Hellebuyck is still there. Happy to get him as my #2G. Lots of volume, which is great. Would've preferred Demko, but still fine with this.

    6. (68) Zach Werenski (Cls - D) - I was eyeing Sam Reinhart here but he was picked a couple spots ahead of me. Therefore, I turn to D and grab the one who I feel has the highest point producing ceiling in Werenski.

    7. (77) Dougie Hamilton (NJ - D) - I don't love this pick. I was debating a few other Ds here (as there were too many forwards I still liked on the board). Hamilton's upside is through the roof, but the floor is also low. Fingers crossed.

    8. (92) Jordan Kyrou (StL - LW,RW) - With two D and two G, I know I'm going forwards for my next few picks. Still looking for offense at this point in the draft and Kyrou is my top-ranked skater. Welcome to the team!

    9. (101) Anze Kopitar (LA - C) - Alright, so I have no Cs still at pick 101. Kopitar is boring but he's probably still a 70-pt player who shoots and hits well enough.

    10. (116) Trevor Zegras (Anh - C) - Love to have Zegras on one of my fantasy teams. He's injured right now but he has the possibility to be a big breakout star.

    11. (125) Cole Caufield (Mon - LW,RW) - As a Habs fan, I know I have to keep myself from drafting too many Habs players as I tend to overvalue them. Caufield is ranked 73rd on my list and is still available. I'm grabbing him here without hesitation.

    12. (140) Tage Thompson (Buf - C) - He'll definitely regress but he should still shoot a bunch and he's a decent hitter. I now realize I have only one skater (Kyrou) who was in the playoffs last year, which means I'm clearly punting +/-. I'm fine with that as it allows me to grab players other GMs might stay away from.

    13. (149) Nick Suzuki (Mon - C) - I love the player, he was amazing under MSL last year and he's got great chemistry with Caufield. As my 4th C, I'm ecstatic.

    14. (164) Seth Jones (Chi - D) - This was probably my best value pick. Listen, his +/- is going to be terrible. But he's probably still a 50-point D with over 200 shots and 100 hits. He had no business still being on the board. Very happy to have him.

    15. (173) Mason Marchment (Dal - LW,RW) - Time to grab some hits. Dual eligibility is nice too!

    16. (188) John Gibson (Anh - G) - Gs are flying off the board (which is why I'm so happy to have grabbed two early Gs). Gibson has the best off-night schedule in the league. He's usually strong early in the season. Might trade or drop him later but glad to have him now.

    17. (197) Ryan Pulock (NYI - D) - Meh, he's boring but he's a stat-filler so that's fine.

    18. (212) Luke Schenn (Van - D) - Falling behind in hits so I shoot back up the standings with one of the best hitters in the league.

    19. (221) Anders Lee (NYI - LW) - Ended last year on fire. Volume shooter who can score 30 goals in a strong year. Glad to have him.

    20. (236) Alexander Romanov (NYI - D) - Hits, hits, hits!

    21. (245) Mikael Granlund (Nsh - C) - I was looking for assists but forgot I already had 4Cs. Oh well, he'll be a nice replacement in case of injuries.

    22. (260) Yegor Sharangovich (NJ - C,LW) - High upside this late in the draft. Hopefully plays with Hughes the whole year.

    23. (269) Calen Addison (Min - D) - On the top PP to start the year. I was targeting him the whole draft and it was time to pull the trigger before I got sniped.

    24. (284) Sean Couturier (Phi - C) - Taking a flyer (haha!) on him. Stash him and hope he gets back soon.

    25. (293) Brandon Tanev (Sea - LW,RW) - Hits, hits, hits! Plus, he was kind of forgotten after an injury-filled season but he could also produce 30-35 points to go along with 200 hits. That's a lot of value. Otherwise, I might drop him!

All in all, I'm happy with the draft. I don't hate any of my picks. I would've loved to grab Perfetti in the 22nd round but he went a couple picks ahead of me. Otherwise, I feel like my G are strong and I have a lot of strong forwards. My D might be a little iffy but that was the case last year and I won my league. I'll clearly be dead last in +/- but I don't care too much about that.

Naming my team Connor to Connor in honor of my 2nd and 5th round picks. Go Jets, I guess!

    Good luck to all!

Default Re: Dobber Pro Wales 2022-23

My strategy going into this one was to wait for goalies and focus on lots of skaters and then have a bench with a large chunk of goalies to make sure I get the max games. I usually have trouble with being competitive in hits so I wanted to make sure I got some hits this year rather than just high-scoring options. Being right on the turn I was planning on each turn making sure I got one good hits player and then a good scorer.

Round 1 (12) and Round 2 (13) - The Bash Brothers!! As I mentioned, my strategy was to make sure I got some more hits and to try getting a high-hits player on each turn. Well I got two of them, and this year I think they both reach 100 points! Let’s go!! Welcome aboard Brady and Matthew Tkachuk

Round 2(36) and Round 3(37) – I was so excited to see Evander Kane still available as he went #22 overall in the Rocky Horror Roto Show (RHRS – as I will compare to it a lot in this recap). So I got my high-hits player for this turn. I was so excited about that pick – that I totally forgot my plan to add Jack Eichel here at this turn, he was on my queue and everything – rookie mistake!! Oh well I added a solid centre in Sebastian Aho. He doesn’t have the upside of Eichel, but he is a bitt safer option. So I will take it.

Round 5 (60) and Round 6 (61) – Eichel is almost making it back to me… I am hoping that my previous gaffe, but he goes six picks earlier. I decide to draft Elias Lindholm and Gabriel Landeskog on this turn. Both are on good offenses and both offer up a good amount of hits. I basically used the draft results from the RHRS as my rankings for this draft. These guys went #36 and #40 overall in the RHRS, where Eichel went #35.

After 6 rounds – I have 2 C, 1 RW and 3LW and I am loving my team at this point. Got good category coverage and feel like I am getting good value at every pick. I decide that with the forwards I have got I can continue to wait on goalies and hopefully find some wins and lots of saves later in the draft. Its time to start considering adding some Defense.

Round 7 (84) and Round 8 (85) - I was planning on taking two Defense here… but Brad Marchand was still available. He went at #60 in RHRS and when he returns he will provide category coverage similar to top 2 round picks… so why not add him in Round 7!! And I go to my D-list and I debate between Brent Burns and Doughty. With all the hits I have from my earlier picks I can afford to take the offensive Burns as opposed to having to focus on a tonne of hits form D-men. Burns I think should provide great value here as his minus 15 from last year will be much better in the Carolina system.

Round 9 (108) and Round 10 (109) - Again, with the earlier hits I accumulated, I felt I could take some offensive players that were slipping because they don’t hit as much. Alex Pietrangelo shoots the puck a lot and Vegas should bounce back as a group this year with Stone and Eichel healthy and the addition Kessel. Then I add Teuvo Teravainen who doesn’t hit a lot but puts up points and powerplay points. I am going to live and die by the Carolina Hurricanes powerplay as this is the third player from it.

After 10 – 2 C, 2 RW, 4LW and 2 D. I am still loving how my team is coming together and love the options that I still have on the board to add to the D and the goalies. I look at my roster and think that it is now time that I can afford to add some goalies.

Round 11 and 12 – There are two starting goalies still on the board for playoff contending teams. So I decide it is time to add them and get some wins and saves. Both of these goalies I expect to play a decent amount for their teams. Jordan Binnington and Logan Thompson. Binnington had a down year, but won the starting job back in the playoffs last year and St. Louis was happy enough with him to let Husso go. Thompson is not as guaranteed a role, but the Yahoo report said that he was likely to be the workhorse and get 50 starts… so they sold me on it.
Round 13 and 14 – I am able to add a couple players that were drafted in the 11th round of the RHRS… hopefully the RHRS guys know what they are doing! Tomas Hertl is my decent hits player on this turn and John Klingberg is the Defense that I decided to add out of a few options that I considered. At this point of the draft I have a lot of players on top teams (Carolina, Calgary, Edmonton, Florida, Colorado) that I can afford to take some players on the lower teams and not lose too much ground on my plus/minus.

Round 15 and 16 – When I drafted Klingberg there was a list of about 7 more D-men that I was considering and both these guys were on it. Charlie McAvoy and Tony DeAngelo were 11th and 13th round picks respectively in the RHRS. And I am excited to add them at this point. I will have to wait a bit for McAvoy to get back but when he does it will be worth it for a 16th round pick. And not I have 5 Defense and decent coverage across the forward positions.

Round 17 and 18 - I decide it is a good time to go back to the goalie well. Got to try and make sure you get the 164 games played. I add Antti Raanta because he plays on a top team behind an oft-injured goalie. So I am not expecting 30 wins here, but I am expecting him to get 10 wins, with the potential of vulturing another 10 wins if Andersen gets hurt. Carter Hart plays for the Flyers, who will not win much. But Tortorella is the coach and they should improve defensively and lead to an improved GAA and enough saves because he will play majority of games… who is the Flyers backup goalie anyways?

Round 19 and 20 – Rikard Rakell Is the first player the whole draft that I have taken at an earlier spot than he was drafted in the RHRS. I was disappointed to miss out on him in that league and I needed RW bad. He was the best RW player on the board and playing with Crosby and Guentzel for a full season could lead to career stats! And he hits – I needed to make sure I got back to getting some hits on each turn. Travis Konecny – was the other RW that I felt comfortable with here and he hits a decent amount and he is going to be on the Flyers PP … got to take a chance on my boy here who was drafted in Round 17 of the RHRS!

Round 21 – Max Pacioretty – The greatest roto league player I have ever played with took Pacioretty in Round 19 of the RHRS. I wanted to try waiting a bit longer to take him, but then I figured I would kick myself if I didn’t get him. When he returns, I could have the whole Carolina Hurricanes powerplay unit! And in Round 21 – I might as well draft a player with higher round value when he is healthy and stash him on the IR and wait for him to come back.

    Round 22-25.

Colton Parayko – needed another D-man that could cover categories decently and was drafted in round 14 of the RHRS!!

Stuart Skinner – the backup goalie on a team that should get lots of wins… and just like Raanta – plays behind a goalie that seems to get injured every year so the opportunity to be the starter for a stretch of the season.

    Brady Skjei – Another D-man – meh

Frank Vatrano – A dual eligible forward on a line with Zegras. Let’s hope for big things!

Centre - Sebastian Aho, Elias Lindholm, Gabriel Landeskog (LW), Tomas Hert
Left Wing - Brady Tkachuk, Evander Kane, Brad Marchand (IR) , Max Pacioretty (IR), Frank Vatrano
Right Wing - Matthew Tkachuk, Teuvo Teravainen, Travis Konecny, Rikard Rakell,
Defense - Brent Burns, Alex Pietrangelo, John Klingberg, Tony DeAngelo, Colton Parayko, Brady Skjei
Goalie - Jordan Binnington, Logan Thompson, Anti Raanta, Carter Hart, Stuart Skinner

I usually name my team after some player on team and a country song... but after drafting the Tkachuk brothers back to back and recently watching The Mighty Ducks I have decided to go with The Bash Brothers.

Nice draft recap, PH! And great draft overall. I like your team a lot! You sniped me (well, not really snipe as you weren't next to me in the order, but you know) on Marchand and McAvoy. And while we differ totally in strategy here, you managed to grab the last top volume on a good team goalie available in Binnington (I have him in most of my other leagues).

When Marchand, McAvoy and Pacioretty (hopefully) come back, you could have a crazy looking lineup!

Default Re: Dobber Pro Wales 2022-23

I'm not sure how I feel about my team this year. I was using my Dobber cheat sheet to help build my queue, but somewhere around round 15 I realized that there were just way too many D men listed in the top 250 players on my list, so I wasn't thrilled about some of my late round picks. My D is strong and I have some considerable top end forward talent, but the forward ranks are thin and my goaltending is... a gamble, to say the least.

Round 1 - Matthews: hummed and hawed between him and Draisaitl, but ultimately decided that the G/SO combo was too good to pass on, in spite of Matthews being a centre.

Round 2 & 3 - JT Miller & Letang: Svechnikov got snagged right in front of me, so I had to 'settle' for Miller (the LW eligibility helped), and then Letang. Wasn't planning on taking a D so early, but Letang was the last of the big 5, with Makar, Hedman, Fox, and Josi already gone. If I passed on a D this round, I probably would have had to pass for a few more rounds after.

Rounds 4 & 5 - DeBrincat & Jarry: there was a pretty hard run on goalies going on in round 3, but with just one person picking twice after me and Hellebuyck and Jarry still left, I decide to chance it and take DeBrincat and sure enough, Jarry is still there for me at the start of the next round. I had decided to try to do goaltending on the 'cheap' this year, but this was as 'cheap' as I was willing to go. At this stage, I have 1 C, 2 LW, 1 D, and 1 G. I really need a RW eligible player.

Rounds 6 & 7 - Theodore & Tavares: I'm eyeing Tarasenko all the way here, but he gets grabbed a few picks before me, so I pivot back to D. I'm not seeing the kinds of options at RW that I want, so I decide to pick the guy who I think stands to put up the most points in terms of remaining skaters, and that's Tavares. I'm a Sens fan with TOR's two top centres on my roster - unplanned and unexpected.

Round 8 & 9 - Pavelski & Sergachev: my RW options are dwindling, but Pavelski goes unpicked so I jump at him. Savages picks Batherson, my next intended pick, so I pivot back again to D, selecting Sergachev. i'm not super thrilled with this one, but at least he brings some HIT, which, excepting Letang, I have been neglected.

Rounds 10 & 11 - Keller & Merzlikins: the goalie offerings are getting dire, but I stay the course and take Keller, hoping he can flirt with PPP status this year; on the swing back, I bite the bullet and take Merzlikins. Heaven help me, I'm all in on cheap goalies now.

Rounds 12 & 13 - Petersen & Pionk: I'm eyeing Francouz all the way here, but Kofax takes him right in front of me, so I scramble and take Petersen. The picks others are making now are really varying with the top end of my list. I decide to grab another steady D in Pionk. My D is going to have lots of guys who put up 35-40 points and big HIT numbers.

Round 14 & 15 - Horvat & Morrissey: here I'm just looking to add the best scorer I can find (Horvat) and then another solid D with good points/HIT spreads.

Rounds 16 & 17 - Petry & Bjorkstrand: I think this is the point in the draft when I realize that my forward selections have been a little short. I have 6 guys who will flirt with PPP status or better, but that's it. That is a big concern. I grab Petry as insurance on Letang and to add to my stable of D, and then plug my nose and take Bjorkstrand - I suspect his +/- numbers are going to hurt bad.

Rounds 18 & 19 - Crouse & M. Foligno: at this point, I have 8 forwards, 6 D, and 3 goalies, so I have to add forwards. The picks are now all over the place, but I decide to load up on HIT with Crouse and then M Foligno. Not excited about these picks, but if they bring me 40 points and 200+ HIT, they've done their job.

Rounds 20 & 21 - Roslovic & Hronek: Kofax grabs Killorn right in front of me, so I grab my backup, Roslovic, and cross my fingers that he ends up playing with Laine and Gaudreau. I grab Hronek on the swing back - I'm already thinking I might have to trade D to add a forward with more PPPs.

Rounds 23 & 23 - Tolvanen & Kubalik: straight up just looking for points here, high risk with some upside. I am pleased to see afterwards that Tolaven is a hitter.

Rounds 24 & 25 - Korpisalo & DeSmith: I know I'm going to grab some junk goalies here, but I can't decide which ones. As the picks are coming my way, I decide I'm going to try to lock up what I have, so grab the backups to Merzlikins and Jarry. Lordy, my goalies are going to be a bit of a rodeo.

Hi guys, not sure where to post this, but I'd like to know if you're planning on adjusting the draft time for us EU folks, since I won't make the draft at 3am, same as previous year.

I'd like to participate, but with auto-drafted team it's not really challenging for me. You just cannot correct all the flaws post-draft, even though my team was pretty good for auto-draft last year (CCCF was my team).

So I'd like to know if you're open to some time adjustment, before me joining the league this year.

I'm willing to start the draft max. at midnight - your 6:00pm eastern time, otherwise I'll probably leave it to some other team/manager to fill my spot in the league.

I understand if majority want to draft later in the evening, but I just wanted to let you know that I won't be participating then anymore, so you can manage to find the replacement.

So what I was planning on was having everyone fill out an availability spreadsheet (we did it last year in expert league) and go from there. It helped get a better time for the Euro’s.

Also since there is two Pro leagues I am not opposed to shuffling a few managers around to try and get a group who’s availability meshes better. I’m not sure how many non-NA managers there are in those leagues but that can be something I can start looking at now (good idea).

6pm eastern start I would guess would be looking at the weekend draft.
