Default Anyone concerned about Barkov ES linemates

Got my draft tonight. Points only league - 9 team league and I am picking between 7-9.

I am targeting Barkov if I can get him. However the line combinations on LWL and Daily Faceoff got him playing ES with Balcers and Verhaeghe. I know it is only pre-season but I cannot afford to get my 1 pick wrong.

Should I not concern myself and just draft him as a potential 90-95 pts?

    It's a valid concern.
That said... FLA has an up & coming solid C3 in Eetu Luostarinen.
The reason this is interesting is that it may free them up to slide Anton Lundell up to Barkov's wing... and Lundell is a helluva offensive player.
*Note that Lundell, like Barkov, is Finnish.*

If Barkov struggles... or if line 2 struggles (Bennett/M.Tkachuk), FLA will shuffle pieces.

I wouldn't draft Barkov as high as I would in days where Huberdeau might've lined up with him.
I think 80-90pts is more realistic if his linemates are Verhaeghe and... Balcers (yuck). [and Duclair will eventually be back from injury]

But I think... he'll end up... either having Lundell or M.Tkachuk on his wing for 75% of the season.
So... I'd definitely not let him slide farther than 20th overall in any pool format.

Pass on him as a top9 player.
Do not pass on him beyond 18.

If I am picking 7-9 in a snake draft ... it means I will have two choices very close. Here is my draft order:

    1-Mcdavid
    2-Draisaitl
    3-Matthews
    4-MacKinnon
    5-Kucherov
    6-Kaprizov

This is the range I would have two picks:

    7-Makar
    8-Rantanen
    9-Marner
    10-Barkov
    11-Huberdeau
    12-Panarin

If you say that Barkov should be in the 15-20 range who do you add to this list in his place (Stamkos, Crosby, Connor)???

To me Barkov is in the 10 to 15 range. I’d be targeting Marner and then Rantanen. Makar if he is there but prob be gone. I like panarin ahead of Barkov in points only league too.

I wouldn't read absolutely anything into the first preseason line combos. As very few veterans play, the combinations are out of whack.

From what I've read, Barkov has been practicing with Verhaege and Reinhart. Those are very fine teammates.

In points-only, I'd target guys like Rantanen and Panarin ahead of him (especially if position matters). But he's still a fine high floor pick.

In a one-year pool, I still think Crosby will be close to Barkov for pure points.
You choose what you like best there.

Johnny Gaudreau, even in Columbus, is still in this conversation.
He should at LEAST be playing on a line with Patrick Laine.

And Steven Stamkos was right there with Barkov last year.
Stamkos may seem like he's aging, but TB stacks him with Point & Kucherov on line 1... pretty securely.

Those guys are close. You gotta make that call on your own.

I'd say Barkov in round 2... (10th-12th) is very fair consideration.
But you've got it right... it's of slight concern based on his current linemates.

Weegar, also, was no slouch as a part of that FLA team. Defenders get the puck moving forward.
Might be a big drop-off from Ekblad-Weegar to whoever Ekblad is playing with this year.

EDIT: niconasr makes great point. A guy like Balcers is NOT top line. He's a placeholder... so likely he's holding that spot for Reinhart.
    Can't believe I didn't remember that.

Yeah, Barkov in the 10-12 range is very solid pick.

I've seen Makar go in the top 5-6 on a lot of points only drafts. There is a chance Marner, Kuch, or even Kirill is still there at 7-9, in that case I'd take them over Barkov this year 1st round. You may get lucky and have a chance to grab him early 2nd on the way back if loading forwards is your style.

    Thanks everyone
That is my strategy if Rantanen, Marner Kucherov or Kiril happen to be there, for sure I am grabbing one of those guys first.

On the way back I may go for Hedman or Barkov.
