Shame I couldn't make the draft last night - looking forward to reading your post-draft audits! I'll likely post my autodrafted team with some brief comments.

Now the toughest part, coming up with a scary team name. So far I've got:

The Forever Berge (The Forever Purge) - fitting for one of my favorite players whose career is winding down

    Wilson's Wonderland (Willy's Wonderland)

    Tanevantula (Lavalantula)

Default Re: 2022/2023 Rocky Horror Roto Show

I didn’t go into this one with a ton of research under my belt (other than some targets for C and G) and given I had last pick, didn’t have a set strategy other than try to get some FOW from the wing, fade D for the most part, and use the turn to my advantage when picking goalies (grab tandems on decent teams, which I didn’t really execute very well).

Rounds 1&2 – Ovechkin (LW) and Stamkos (C, LW): I figured I would end up with two of Ovechkin, Stamkos and JT Miller which was fine as it would give me some solid FOW from the wing and give me a couple of guys with upside. All three were available so Miller was the odd man out (think he regresses slightly this year). There is some risk in drafting two guys in their 30s with my first two picks and both are likely to regress a bit, however, think I get some solid peripherals to go with some scoring.

Rounds 3&4 – Lindholm (C) and Scheifele (C): I hovered over DeBrincat for a while with the second pick but decided a PPG center was the smarter pick (we will see). Any upside with Stamkos taking face-offs from the wing is lost if I can’t get a decent C core. Hoping Lindholm can up his PPP.

Rounds 5&6 – Marchand (LW) and Georgiev (G): I didn’t think Marchand would last until my next set of picks so decided to gamble that he comes back in good form. I decided on Georgiev as COL is one of the teams I had in mind for goalies and also hoping that this pick would push any interest in Francouz down a little, but I messed that up (more on this coming).

Rounds 7&8 – EP40 (C, LW) and Swayman (G): I think EP40 has a great year. His FOW are dismal but since I can slot him on the wing, I am very happy with this pick. I decided on Swayman as BOS was one of the other teams (along with Toronto) that I was targeting for goalies. I was eyeing Giroux, but he went a few picks before my turn. Now to keep an eye on Francouz and Ullmark…

Rounds 9&10 – Norris (C) and Ullmark (G): I decided to target another C here and landed on Norris. Some risk as he might not get PP1, but I like his peripherals and the fact that he is G heavy. Francouz went two picks before me, so I decided I needed to lock up at least one goalie tandem and took Ullmark.

Rounds 11&12 – Duchene (RW) and Gibson (G): Had Rust and Seguin as my primary targets but they were long gone by my turn. Duchene will regress this year, but I like him at this stage of the draft and he should end up giving a small bump on FOW from the wing. Goalies were looking slim, and I decided I needed to lock up close to 164 games played so went with what I hope is bona fide starter in Gibson. Not sure about this last pick though, bit of a panic grab (which is par for the course as we move towards the bottom half of the draft).

At this point I am not unhappy with my team, but there are a lot of question marks. Can Ovechkin and Stamkos maintain last year’s production (or close to it)? Will Marchand come back healthy? Will Georgiev get 50+ starts? Will Norris be on PP1? Does EP40 rebound? Things could work out well, but a bit too much uncertainty for my liking.

Rounds 13&14 – Bjorkstrand (RW) and Spurgeon (D): If Bjork gets PP1 then I am pretty happy with this pick, and he brings stats across the board. I also needed tome RW help so this starts to fill a hole. The bigger hole is on D, although that was intended, but decide I need to start looking for someone – Spurgeon will have to do. Hopefully he gets PP1 duties as well.

Rounds 15&16 – Oshie (RW, C) and Severson: Plugging holes at this point with guys that have PP1 potential. Severson has decent peripherals as well. I am starting to wonder how bad my D is going to be at this point though.

Rounds 17&18 – Nelson (C) and Tuch (RW): Not super excited about Nelson but need another C (most of my other targets were gone) and he helped me out last year. Tuch I like and think this is solid value at this stage.

Rounds 19&20 – Shattenkirk (D) and Ekman-Larsson: Pretty ugly set of picks. D is looking really slim though and both could see PP2. They also both shoot a decent amount (hopefully again this year) which I find can be rare in D towards the end of the draft.

Rounds 21, 22, 23, 24&25 – Halak (G), Suter (D), Duclair (RW), Puljujarvi (RW), and Kessel (RW): I decided I needed another goalie to help minimize the number of games I need to play Gibson and/or help out if Georgiev ends up being the back up. I picked Suter only because Dobber has him on PP1, if he’s not then barf. The rest were darts, although I am intrigued to see what Kessel can do (hopefully his SH% goes way up!).

I am not sure what to make of this team. I think I have really strong LW, above average C, and potentially good goaltending. My RW is not very sexy but okay and my D are pretty lame. I also only have 5 D (out of 6 spots) and am short a LW until Marchand comes back. Having two guys on IR+ gives me some streaming flex to start the year and lots of time to make up games later. Overall, I think I need the stars to align in order to get a sniff at the podium.

    Final roster:
    C: Lindholm, Scheifele, Norris, Nelson
    LW: Ovechkin, Stamkos (C), EP40 (C)
    RW: Duchene, Bjorkstand, Oshie, Tuch
D: Spurgeon, Severson, Shattenkirk, Ekman-Larsson, Suter
G: Georgiev, Swayman, Ullmark, Gibson, Halak
    BN: Puljujarvi (RW), Kessel (RW)
    IR+: Marchand (LW), Duclair (RW)

    Alright, here's my draft recap.

I had pick 11, just off the turn which I always prefer.

    1 -11 Andrei Vasilevskiy (TB - G)
With this crowd, you can always guarantee some off the board picks (that usually work out), even in the first round. Assuming Shesterkin and Vasilevsky would be gone by this point, I figured I would target one of the Tkachuk brothers or Ovie here. I was a little surprised (but not shocked) to see Brady Tkachuck go at 7 but I knew that meant that one of Kuch, Vas or M Tkachuk would fall to me. When Rantanen went at 9, I decided to take whichever of Vas/Kuch remained. I also knew this meant I would be able to snag one of Ovie/Stamkos/Tkachuk with my next pick.

    2 -14 Matthew Tkachuk (Fla - RW)
When I pre-ranked the first few rounds of the draft, I had a pretty clear drop off after pick 14, which is partially why I chose the 11 slot when we drafted our picks. The top 14 all went how I expected (with a few guys moving up or down a bit), which left me with Tkachuk which I was more than thrilled about as I had him ranked 11.

    3 -35 Jack Eichel (VGK - C)
Feeling pretty good about rounds 1 & 2 and having a ton of guys queued up for Round 3. I came crashing back to reality pretty quickly as my queue was decimated. Really wanted a winger here but watched 6 of the first 7 picks of this round take that option off the table. Then of course Zibanejad & Aho went and I had to scramble a bit. Considered my boy Bergeron here but had to take a chance on Eichel. I think he has a bounceback year and could provide first round value.

    4 -38 Frederik Andersen (Car - G)
I love Freddy Andersen. Wasn't planning on taking 2 goalies in the first four rounds but after seeing how early goalies went in the Dobber Experts league earlier in the day, I decided to shore up the position early. I also figured it might kick off a goalie run and help some talent slide to me in the next few rounds.

    5 -59 Patrice Bergeron (Bos - C)
Boy oh boy are people low on the Bruins this year. I know if Pengwin7 was still in the RHRS, there's no way I'm getting Bergeron in round 5. I had Brad Marchand targeted for round 5/6 and figured I could lock up 2/3rd of Boston's top line with these picks. But Scott (Chili Con Carne) had other plans.

    6 -62 Brent Burns (Car - D)
I'd love to know if I went Marchand last pick if Bergy would have been here. So this was a bit of a panic pick. After ending up struggling to fill my D in my earlier draft, I didn't want to end up with that issue again. I was scrambling though, probably could have waited a bit on Burns but I don't hate this pick.

There was some great value drafted behind me in this round with Point/Pavelski/Forsberg/Tavares going in the next 6 picks.

    7 -83 MacKenzie Weegar (Cgy - D), 8 -86 Jacob Trouba (NYR - D)
These two both provide decent offensive stats but have their values pushed up by top-notch hits and blocks totals, shoot alot and play on strong teams to provide a solid +/-. There were better offensive options available, but I'm happy with these guys at this point.

CcC's pick of EP40 here was excellent as well. I've always avoided him in this league because of his weak FW totals. But he has LW eligibility this year so he could end up providing tons of value if he bounces back to where he's capable of.

    9 -107 Mark Stone (VGK - RW), 10 -110 Evgeny Kuznetsov (Was - C)
Both of these guys just kept sliding down the draft board and should provide excellent value outside the top 100 in the draft.

    11 -131 Vitek Vanecek (NJ - G), 12 -134 Antti Raanta (Car - G)
Goalies had been going pretty steady and it's always a battle to hit the 164 games played threshold. I always try to get 3 decent volume starters and handcuff at least one of them in this league. I think Vanecek could be the missing piece in New Jersey that helps them get to be a playoff contender. Raanta gives me the Carolina handcuff, he was a bit of a reach and I left guys like Varlamov (solid ratios), Gibson (high volume starter), Petersen on the board. But I don't think he would have made it to my next picks.

Yzerman'sLegacy sniped me a few times in this draft, but none stung more than taking McAvoy right before my Vanacek pick. And The Kings in Yellow getting Jenner this late is great value too.

    13 -155 Jamie Benn (Dal - C,LW)
Benn provides top 100 value in this league due to his FWs from the wing and solid stats across the board

    14 -158 Marcus Foligno (Min - LW,RW), 15 -179 Andrew Mangiapane (Cgy - LW,RW)
Ugh, did I reach for these guys here? These are two value picks if you draft them at the right time. I'm not sure I did. I don't feel like it was super early, I just think I may have been able to get them a round or two later. Funny note, the Foligno pick came in a mini-Minny run of 5 Wild players being drafted. Hartman went next which is insane value for him at this point in the draft. But I already had enough Cs so had to focus on wingers. Great pick YL!

temek with the Chychrun pick could be gold here if he gets moved soon. But I really don't need to compliment temek's picks as they are always gold.

    16 -182 Tyson Barrie (Edm - D)
I've learned my lesson about drafting soft D in years past but Barrie could provide great offesive value at this point if he ends up as PPQB1 in Edmonton. But thats an "if" for sure.

Loved Shoeless' pick of Vrana here and I think PenguinHunter should get good value out of Stuart Skinner.

    17 -203 Tom Wilson (Was - RW)
Tom Wilson could be back in November, if he is, this is great value. If it's January, it's still worth the pick at this point.

    18 -206 Ivan Barbashev (StL - C,LW), 19 -227 Seth Jarvis (Car - LW,RW), 20 -230 Brandon Tanev (Sea - LW,RW)
At this point, I'm trying to get some names I wanted to target late in the draft. I was particularly happy with my Tanev pick here as he was absolute money last year before his injury.

Someone explain to me how we let temek get Pacioretty for his inevitable late season run to the top of the standings?

    21 -251 Martin Fehervary (Was - D)
Needed D and it was slim pickins. But I like Fehervary for his banger cats without being a drag on +/-

Owen Power/ALexis Lafreniere going this late just shows how little we tend to focus on youth in this league. The way the NHL is trending younger, these picks could really pay off.

    22 -254 Anthony Stolarz (Anh - G)
Honestly, he outplayed Gibson last year and Anaheim has the best off-night schedule. Not sure how more people haven't been targeting him as a deep sleeper.

Kuzmenko and Arvidsson could both outperform their draft position here.

    23 -275 Martin Necas (Car - RW)
Am I missing something here? I know people around here are pretty big on Necas. Although this particular group smartly doesn't tend to overvalue youth in this one-year league. But I'll take a chance on his offensive potential in Round 23.

    24 -278 Karel Vejmelka (Ari - G)
Starting goalie on a weak team that will likely be stapled to my bench most of the time unless he gets insanely hot. But this does 2 things, it prevents others from getting the volume stats he provides and let's me hopefully trade him to someone desperate for goaltending help at some point.

    25 -299 Anthony Cirelli (TB - C,LW)
I always like to stash a value guy or two on my IR to start the season.

As always, a frustrating and challenging draft with a great group of GMs! Can't wait to see how if shakes out fellas!
    Without me, it's only "aweso".
