1st overall pick / keep 6 ….who to take ?

looking for advice on 1st overall pick in a Keep 6 , 12 team , points only.

I have needs in various spots and merged Dobber projections into Fantasy Geek spreadsheet with my league points categories

leaves me with selections of top G / D / F positions

still not a lot of clear cut “ wow that guy got dropped “ choices.

So , I have 1st overall and 17th , trying to figure out a top forward to add ( or go rookie and grab Shane Wright ? )
and then go Dman ? Or Goalie ?

Any thoughts …. Who would you grab / Draft /Plan to target looking at my Keepers listed In signature .

If it's a keep 6 with no minor slots there's no way I'm going for any rookie in this draft class. Your roster shows Oettinger is on your team but also one of the available goalies. Were those the drops from last year?

I'd go for a forward first, any of the top three would be good.

Just edited my signature to remove drops , just had keeper deadline last night , draft on weekend coming.
agreed wary of rookie top picks.

I'd go for Dahlin, probably. Definitely a D of those choices.

You only start 6 forwards versus 3 defense. Dahlin instantly becomes the guy who I think is your best D. If you want to go Heiskanen or even Werenski , maybe, but I think Dahlin is the elite upside guy.

I definitely go for a D-Men . Either Dahlin or Dobson.

In a 12-team, start 1G league, you definitely want to lay-off goalies.
11 teams will bite on goalies too soon... and the 12th best goalie out there will be just fine... and you can wait... and wait... and still get a good one.

With 5F(of6) and 1D(of3), I'd be looking at D.
Most NHL teams run a 4F/1D powerplay unit(s) these days. That's important, especially in point-heavy leagues.
So there are approximately 128F (32x4) skating on PP1 units... but only 32D (32x1) skating on PP1 units.
In point-centric leagues... you want to make sure you get your 3 of these guys... because your league is looking to roster at LEAST 36 (12 team x 3D).

Werenski is my fave here... since Gaudreau (& Kent Johnson) should really elevate that CBJ PP1 unit.
And there's zero threat to Werenski for that spot.

Chabot is my #2. OTT is rocking two awesome PP units now... only downside is that Jake Sanderson could threaten there... but there's still two awesome units.

Dahlin & Dobson are also great bets, for me - in that order, if the others are off the board.

Get your 3D, maybe 4D, before you return to forwards.
You want some defenders that can rack up PP1 points.
(You haven't made a "depth" list at forward, d, and goalie... but I'd bet the D-pointing drops off heavily after 20 or so picks... whereas the F is probably strong still...)

Thanks Pengwin7 , that’s a fantastic breakdown , and also added to thoughts I had.
Shoring up my defense first is how I have been looking at it too.

Joining a growing opinion of avoiding early picks on Goalies too.

The biggest return question I have is the No love for Heiskanen?
Dobber and even more from Dom on the athletic has Heiskanen set for a another breakout level.
With Klingberg out of the way , full control of PP1 , more ice time and a upgraded offensive minded coach change.
A few conversations are on his possible next level “Fox like “ breakout being possible this year.

With Dahlin I’m still worried what direction Sabres are going…but his upside can be huge and can have another level being only 22

Chabot , I can also see being strong with the new additions on offence , so I really do see the big season he may have a big year.

I would go with Dahlin, Oettinger or Sorokin for this one.

I think Dahlin is going to break out really soon and it's going to be big. Buffalo seems to finally be trending in the right direction and the cast of talent in the minors that will soon surround Dahlin is very impressive.

That said, if you go the goalie route because of the high value of goalie stats in your league, Oettinger and Sorokin will both be high volume starters who will have low .GAA on teams that will battle for a playoff spot.

Agree with the others on grabbing a D, I’d go for Dahlin or Werenski, then Chabot
