The numbers don't lie... with goals worth more, Matthews is the pick.
Hey there, hope you're all getting ready for the new season !
So, I was lucky enough to have the first spot in the draft, we're doing a snake draft so I will be the last for the second pick.
Given the "weird" but interesting format we have, I'm wondering who's best between Matthews and McDavid.
Here is the format of that league (with a salary cap):
18 managers. 7 forwards, 4 defs, 1 goalie, 1 team, Salary cap of $66M.
Points for forwards and defs:
6 per goal
4 per assist
1 per block
1 per hit
2 per takeaway
-1 per penalty minutes
Points for goalies:
6 for a goalie win
4 for a shutout
0.3 per saves
-1 per goal against
Given these stats, last year, Matthews outperformed:
#1 - Matthews: 839pts in total in 73 games and 11.49 pts/game
#2 - McDavid: 782pts in total in 80 games and 9.49 pts/game
For reference here are the other players in the top 10 (best defs arrive in top 9-10 position):
#3 -J.T Miller: 753pts in total in 80 games and 9.41pts/game
#4 - Draisaitl: 736pts in total in 80 games and 9.2pts/game
#5 -Huberdeau: 719pts in total in 80 games and 8.99pts/game
#6 - Kaprizov: 708pts in total in 81 games and 8.74pts/game
#7 - Marner: 692pts in total in 72 games and 9.61pts/game
#8 - Ovechkin: 686pts in total in 77 games and 8.91pts/game
#9 - Josi: 679pts in total in 80 games and 8.49pts/game
#10 - Makar: 677pts in total in 80 games and 8.79pts/game
My question is simple. For this year, do you think Matthews will keep outperforming McDavid in this specific league format, or should I just do as everyone everywhere and pick McDavid ?
The numbers don't lie... with goals worth more, Matthews is the pick.
i would go with Matthews, at worst its very very close and you gain slightly on the salary cap but i have a feeling Matthews will go over 60 this year.

It's good you added in their actual scores because reading the scoring I would have guessed McDavid outproduced Matthews last year. But he did not.
I see both having mostly the same seasons, with Matthews having some room to improve if he plays 82. The savings in salary are an added bonus.
Take Matthews.

NO IR
I would still go with McDavid and here is why. From the projected stats I have on both McDavid and Matthews for this year, I have McDavid having 46 Goals and 77 Assists. Matthews coming in with 58 Goals and 42 Assists. If you go with the points your league gives for the Goals and Assists that would add up to McDavid with 584 points and Matthews with 516 points. McDavid is still the better selection.
I’d go Mathews with your format
Matthews it is then. Thanks guys !
To answer Caps Crazy, the thing is even with your projections, there are other points to take in consideration in that format.
-1 per penalty minute, that Matthews get very few in a season compared to McDavid, and takeaways that seem to be to the advantage of Matthews as well.
I'm very curious how Brady Tkachuk grades out in here, though I take it that the PIMs hurt him.
