Default FREE Auction league on Yahoo, points w/ peripherals (not H2H)

    Hello everyone,

My auction league on yahoo is going into its 7th year (new teams drafted each year). It's 13 teams x 20 roster spots. We're tentatively doing the draft on **Friday, September 30th at 9pm eastern** *but this could be pushed back to the October 3 - 6 range.* If you want to try something new, this league could be for you. I have a write-up for anyone inexperienced or unfamiliar with auctions, so don't let that deter you. Just ask. There's a lot to be explained here, but hopefully not too overwhelming or boring. Feel free to ask questions or clarification on anything.

Scoring format is NOT H2H, rather a running-total points system that includes peripheral categories. I designed the scoring myself with a lot of thought, but because it's fairly different from what people are used to, it's often met with skepticism or criticism but also curiosity and interest. Check it out in the link above, and below is some rationale for it being unconventional.

Most notably for skaters, Even-Strength points are made to be worth slightly more than Power Play points by setting PPP as negative. The rationale being that EVPs are harder to produce. There's no reason to actively avoid PPPs since they're still a net positive (EV goal is 10 pts, while PPG is 9 pts) and the players on the PP are generally the best players on the team, still scoring many EV points... Then on the other side, there is a big ~3x multiplier for SHPs. The rationale being to offer a potential reward for being a Penalty Killer. This bonus would not be as feasible in an H2H league because a random SHP could be randomly decisive to a weekly match-up, but it works here because the league scores as a season running-total. Usually points from SHPs end up accounting for 1-2% of a teams total points by the end of the season. Similarly, blocks are worth more than the other peripherals to better reward defense and defensive defensemen... The winner usually finishes with over 10,000 points. These nuances may not have much effect on player selection strategy at the draft or post-draft as total point production (goals and assists) make up the bulk of the scoring, but in the event of a close race these adjustments could serve as a tiebreaker of sorts. See last year's scoring table here: https://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.c...ings?opt_out=1

Perhaps the most unconventional element of the scoring system is Goaltending, which can best be described as high-risk, high-reward. Most leagues are very forgiving of goals allowed, because usually it only takes a few saves to offset a GA... Here it takes 10 Saves to offset a GA, which is much higher than most setups. However, you can think of the automatic GS (game started) as a stat points as giving you one freebie GA. By using GS in place of W as a category, the offensive performance of a goalie's team, for better or worse, is removed from the equation. Even a team's defense is atrocious and gives up many shots and goals and ends up losing, the goalie can still be viable in this league if saving above 90%. On the other side, by not counting wins, mediocre or bad goalie starts don't get bailed out if the team happens to win. A high Sv% matters a lot, but GAA itself is not relevant... So in general, goalies will average a higher average points per game than skaters. but also the game to game point totals for goalies will be more volatile and some chance of a negative score. You could see 40+ pts in a shutout with many saves, or -20 or more if he gets shelled. Among the regularly starting goalies, Shesterkin lead the league with 19.5 ppg, and about 14 goalies who made regular appearances to average above 12 ppg, whereas there were only 7 skaters to meet this mark led by Matthews at 14.3. However, post-draft the supply of high performing goalies at any given time that can be found more opportunistically, even if on an intermittent basis, tends to be more than skaters, so elite skaters are worth more than elite goalies at the draft. When comparing players at the same position, especially goalies, they're best compare on an average points per game basis and Last 7/14 days in particular. This is a useful filter on the Player List page, and also here are the draft results from last year:

The league starts 1 goalie, not the standard 2, so most days it's a critical decision on who to start... 82 games per starting spot is standard for Point leagues (and Roto league), but this league has a 90 games limit per starting spot which allows for moderate streaming/substitution. Your bench players will be able to play about half of their games (if you were to play your regular starters for every game)... If you have questions/comment on any of the scoring values or about auction drafting, feel free to ask. Thanks for reading!
