Highest paid player in the league now. Good for Nate but glad I don't own him in any cap leagues
MacKinnon extension
8yrs, 100.8m, 12.6aav
I personally think this was competitive negotiations, McDavid is 12.5aav and going $100k over that seems like a move to just prove a point. And there goes the "team friendly deal" he harped about, but I guess he could have gotten more?

Without me, it's only "aweso".
JUST enough to one-up McDavid
He left money on the table I'd say. Good deal for both parties.

well the truth is that if you take in consideration that he was playing on most team friendly league for 5 years, this is more than fair. Made it easier for Avs to pull the trigger since they already wont he cup.

I guess since he won a cup he's changed his mind on the home town discount.
Good for him & the Avs getting the deal done.
he definitely left money on the table but got just enough to keep himself happy
auston will probably get 12.7m aav next offseason
One day I will quit fantasy hockey, today is not that day.
I'll play devil's advocate here. I don't like this deal. sure he may deserve it, but what's wrong with a 10 million a year salary (even that's super steep). But it allows for a very competitive team year in and out. If you're a player, wouldn't you want to have a legit chance year in and out?
I realize he was super cheap on the contract prior, but as an athlete where you worked your whole career to win, i would think winning should be in your blood and you want to do it at all cost. even half this salary and he's set for life too.
To me, those giant contracts just don't make sense.

Fair deal? Yes. And no question he was criminally underpaid yet chose to honor the contract without a peep. He could've forced their hand to get more, but at the same time perhaps settled for $1M less, which, while it doesn't sound like much, will add up. I agree that having won a Cup made this a lot easier for both sides to get done.

"Cleavage is like the sun. You can look, but dont stare.. Unless you're wearing sunglasses."
Ya it's pretty hard to be the highest paid player in the league, while clearly NOT being the #1 best player in the league and consider it "team-friendly". That said, I think we might see him play his best season this year. He clearly had a monkey on his back and was trying to do too much by himself a lot of the time, so now that they've won and the pressure is off I think he can relax a little and just play his game.
Have we seen NHL Signing bonuses this big and the base salaries so small? Mac's regular paycheck through the season is going to look ridulously small, comparitively speaking!
It is a fair deal for a top player who is a franchise player. Both sides end up happy in the end. Works out well.
