I feel that's a decent deal for both sides. Montreal takes on a little risk considering the term if Dach flops but for a 21-year old who should be a middle-six center, that's a fine deal.

With 16 Forwards for 12 spots (includes Drouin and Monahan) something has to happen to guys like Hoffman, Dvorak, Dadonov, Pezzatta, and Pitlick. There's about 7 guys for 2 spots. Should be interesting who makes the cut for Montreal.

Pezzetta will go to the AHL (if he slips through waivers) and Byron is going on LTIR. That brings it down to 14 which means they don't have to make a move now.

I agree it's crowded but I'm not sure a move is imminent.

Been watching/awaiting this imbalance to be resolved as well.

Assumption was that a F (or two) would be moved out for an NHL-level Dman... though if MTL isn't trying to compete this year, maybe not.

Obvious fit seemed to be WPG (too many D, not enough F) but with the whole PLD-thing now I'm less certain.

But yeah, something has to give here and I'd think/hope relatively soon now that Dach's AAV has been settled.

Habs could also elect to send Slafkovsky to the minors as well. I think he makes the team, but that's another option they could explore.

I had no idea Byron is going to hit LTIR. Guy helped in a Plane Crash rescue but can't play games!

And Price is golfing. Playing hockey is different though, especially at their level. Knees and ankles can be healed enough to live a normal life without being able to play high-end sports.

I like Dach buy that's a big commitment (both in term and dollars) for a guy who's been limited since being drafted.

Most Habs fans like the deal. If the worst happens and he busts, it's probably as a mediocre 3rd line C minimum, so $3.36 will be overpaying but not that big a deal with all the other contracts coming off the books soon. If he succeeds and becomes a reliable 2C, it's a steal likely in years 3 and 4 especially. All will be up to how they develop him now, MSL to step up and make him the player he can be, especially in the faceoff dot. Someone mentioned he needs to be mentored by Monahan, maybe that was part of the equation in bringing him in. I like the deal, Dach has the tools, he's unproven but only 21, to nail him down for this amount is a decent bet.

He needs to improve on his 30% Faceoff win stat to be a serviceable C3. The good thing is he can't really be worse at it lol. Like if you're 30% at Faceoffs, you aren't being trusted to win the draw anyways lol.

Like Petterson isn't used as a faceoff guy and he's better at it than Dach. Dach is still young, and if he can turn that 33% FW to 50% he instantly changes his career around if he ends up failing as an offensive player.

If Dach can develop into an effective 2C or even 3C, this is a solid deal.

I think that Slafkovsky going to the AHL to start the season is a very distinct possibility.

As the season progresses, Kent Hughes will have the chance to deal expiring contracts (Drouin, Monahan, Dadonov) or bank on rebound seasons to increase the value of certain players (Dvorak, Armia, Gallagher). This is when their first pick overall can come in, with AHL seasoning and a good feel of North American rinks. We've seen Montreal being very conscious of asset management since the new GM took over and I suspect it will have an impact on Slafkovsky to start.

    Just a hunch.

It's a reasonable gamble for sure. You might not end up liking it, but chances are you won't absolutely hate it. With the chance you'll absolutely love it, it was worth the risk.
