Thoughts on MacKinnon + Newhook for Zegras + Pettersson

Hello Everyone,

League in signature. My trade for McDavid failed yerterday. The other GM that got him is ALL IN this year with a rebuild afterwards. With that in mind, a MacKinnon at 6.3 this year is awesome.

I sent this offer to the GM in question, and I'm stil unsure of his feedback. What's your reaction on this proposal:

Side A:

• Newhook

Side B:

• Pettersson
• Zegras

Which side do you prefer for next year and after (not this year), no picks involved

My keepers would then be:

I might be over simplifying but I would keep what you have. Yes Zegras and Pettersson are nicer options than Newhook, but Mack is the clear best player here and it's not particularly close. I get that you get younger maybe but I don't really think 26 year old Mack on a stacked first Line and PP1 is really an issue. I would be accepting quickly if I were the other GM. And I am pretty naive to cap leagues....but isn't Mack the kind of guy you are ok with having taking up a pretty big portion of your cap?

i dont mind the principal of this deal but you need to get more... unless you get 3rd significant piece that fits your keepers im keeping McKinnon.

I'm sticking with the MacK side. The only reason to do this IMO is from a CAP management perspective and I'm not sure how that will work out for you. As you requested if we look at this starting in the 2023 - 2024 season then a lot of things CAP wise will have changed.

Side A:
MacKinnon: Will get a huge contract 12 - 13 Mil per season
Newhook: Will also be on a new contract, perhaps 4 - 5 Mil per season

Side B:
Pettersson: Will be on the last year of a 7.3 Mil contract. A raise the following year is likely.
Zegras: This is the real wild card, but chances are he will sign a BIG contract, the question is, how much? If the Ducks decide to lock him up it will be for serious money, likely in the neighborhood of 10 - 12 Mil per season.

This is all conjecture on my part anticipating potential CAP hit and I'm sure no expert in that regard, but if we do the math, you will have MacK and Newhook for 18 Mil or you would have EP40 and Zegras for over 19 Mil.

If Zegras signs a shorter term contract for less money then there could be some CAP savings but I would suggest that your team is not as strong as it would be with MacK and Newhook. If Zegras does sign a big contract then at best you are getting less production for about the same or more CAP.

Until all these contracts get sorted out I'm holding and waiting to see what happens. Cross "the CAP bridge" when you come to it, not before (:

Thank you for the input! I might have valued Zegras and Pettersson a little too high. Basic principle : Don't be the one that gives the best player in a trade.
