Great thread. Will watch with interest. With the exception of Garland, Dobber has the other 5 listed as sleeper picks.
Hi guys,
Here are my top potential breakout players for this year (If we follow the BT formula)
- Kailer Yamamoto (186 GP, 14pts in the last 20 games, top 6 edmonton)
- Garland (214 GP, 20 pts in the last 19 games)
- Zacha (386 GP, new team)
- Dylan Strome (273, 32 pts in the last 39 games)
- Jesses Puljujarvi (259 GP, 4th overall draft pick)
- Martin Necas (203 GP, 0.77 PTS/G in 2020-21)
Who are you betting on ?

Garland reached a point-per-game production in the last quarter of the season...exactly at the moment he hits the 200-games threshold. I believe he deserves more consideration !

I really like Necas. I think he had a bad year last year but the offensive potential is probably as good as anyone on that list, if not better.

Garland did all that with little PP time, imagine if he got a sniff at PP1.. that’s what’s holding him back, but he may well he traded and if so the sky’s the limit depending where he lands.
I like Necas too. Don’t like Strome, and like Zacha but with Bergeron and Krejci back will he really get opportunity? He barely hit 50 pts in Jersey getting primo PP and ES minutes. Yamamoto good but he strikes me as a guy, even when he pops, who will be light-SOG and assist-heavy, and hard to see him getting PP time.

You could make the argument that Garland has already broken out. I'm not sure he has another significant gear, but maybe he does. All the rest of these guys are certainly solid breakout candidates although it seems we have been waiting years for Zacha but he is a big boy but at age 25 if it doesn't happen this year it may well not happen, at least to any significant degree. Of the remainder I, like others, like Necas and the MaxPax injury just opened the door big time for him. I may be alone here, but I'm still thinking Puli will eventually take off, again a big boy so at age 24 his BT should be this year or "last chance" next. Certainly of the remaining two, Yamamoto and Strome, they too could well pop. It will be interesting to follow these guys and see what actually happens.

For sure Garland has broken out - he had 39 points in 49 his last year in Arizona. So for him it's not so much breakout but whether he can recapture that level and even break out a step beyond, which is clearly what Dobber had forecast last year and even this year. His utilization in Vancouver has clearly impacted that (of his 52 points last year, only 3 were PP!!), but I agree with Dobber and if that changes watch out.

I'm expecting great seasons from Strome and Necas. All of them could do well though.
