    Default 2022-23 First Round (12)

    Allright! Here we Go!
During the offseason keeper and dynasty threads get all the love because one-year leagues have nothing to talk about. But the guide is out and it's time for one of my favorite threads. Simply put name your top-12 fantasy players for the upcoming season based on your league settings.

For me I have 2 pretty firm rules: I do not draft a goalie or a D-man in the first round. If I get the 12th pick I could be tempted by Vasilevsky but even then think goalies are too uncertain, especially in head to head playoffs.

    My top 12:
    1. McDavid - still the King
    2. Draisaitl - solid goal totals and killer points.
    3. MacKinnon - allround stud, possible Stanley Cup hangover?
    4. Matthews - the G and SOG numbers are outstanding, lacks in total P slightly
    5. Kucherov - a stud but is he healthy?
    6. Marner - Killer points, low G total
    7. Huberdeau, new team, killer P, low goal total
    8. Panarin. Killer points, low goal total
    9. Ovechkin. Great G, SOG, PPP, Hits.
    10. M. Tkachuk . New team but killer everything stats
    11. Kaprizov solid numbers all around.
    12. Barkov stud with a new winger

    HM: Kreider, Crosby, Pastrnak, Vasilevsky,

I don't know that he WILL go in the top 12, but in a hits/SOG league, B. Tkachuk should go in the top 12.

I also suspect that people are ready to take Stamkos in the top 10 again after a 100-point season, almost regardless of format.

Cale Makar probably pushing to break that no D in the first round rule.

Vasi and Shesterkin are both in play for me at any point after the first four you've listed.

The non-masher types Huberdeau, Marner, Panarin, and Barkov all at risk of sliding out for me.

You’re wrong about Makar because he’ll have 60+ points, 25+ PPP, and over 400 {shots/hits/blocks}, in a BAD year !! If your league is overweighted to scoring, and points only, then maybe…

I'd be curious to see you run your 12 through fantasy hockey geek. I agree that Makar and B Tkachuk would be very tempting.

Love FHG, Also love trying to figure out where my league (with personal bias') will split from "the math".
Also, while I do not like posting too much info from FHG for free (they deserve to be paid) 1 round seems appropriate.

Here is what FHG says based on Dobber's numbers:

    1. Mcdavid
    2. Matthews
    3. Draisaitl
    4. Kucherov
    5. MacKinnon
    6. Makar
    7. Josi
    8. Kaprizov
    9. B. Tkachuk
    10. Huberdeau
    11. JT. Miller
    12. E. Kane

I have bolded the real big surprises to me.
Brady is a surprise not because of stats but because of how valuable those stats make him
Kaprizov is a surprise based on projected stats
    E. Kane is a surprise based on projected stats, and how valuable those stats make him.
JT Miller similar to E. Kane

Was going to say Ill draft Makar top 12 any day.
Even last year for Dobber roto took him 8th - don't regret it.

I try to avoid having firm rules, but goalies I rarely would draft one with my first pick (ill let someone else do that).

Generally I implement that rule as well, however I went with Vas @ 3rd O/A in a startup keeper league that heavily favours goalies last year and won it. So sometimes I guess I make exceptions, and SOMETIMES they work out!

Honestly the name that surprises me most is Huberdeau. Soft scoring wingers just don't see like 1st round pick territory to me. But I'm sure the numbers and algorithms are much smarter than me; I can say that will full confidence lol

for my League settings this year i'd go

    Mcdavid
    Draisaitl
    Mathews
    Mackinnon
    Kucherov
    Makar
    Barkov
    Shesterkin
    Kaprizov
    Ovechkin
    Vasilevskiy
    Stamkos

Rantanen, Marner, Huberdeau, and the Tkachuk Brothers just miss the cut for top 12 as my League has extra points for D scoring so Makar makes it, Also Goalies have a lot of value so put 2 in there. Also there is extra value for goals over assists so guys like Marner and Huberdeau take a slight hit
    14 Team H2H pts keep 12 plus 10 minors
Skaters G, A, Blk, FOW, HIT, STP, PIM, Tk, SOG. bonus for D pts
Goalies GA, SV, SHO, W, OL

    C - Aho,
    Danault, Granlund, Seguin, Domi
LW- Nichushkin, Svechnikov, Vatrano, Palat, Marchment
RW -Rust, M Tkachuk, Konecny, Pavelski, Ehlers
D - Carlson, Seider, Karlsson, Ekblad, Krug, Manson, Gudas, Walman
G - Georgiev, Vanecek, Talbot, Daccord
M - Gauthier, Savoie, Kasper, Nazar, Bolduc, Bystedt, Cossa, Daws

I'm hoping to talk my commish into converting our 1 year into a keeper, but until then, my league is a 14 team, 1 year, H2H, scoring G, A, PPP, +/-, hits, SOG, PIM, GWG, Wins, GAA, SV%, saves, shutouts. I have no firm rules, though I've never taken a goalie in the first 2 rounds and I've won the past 2 seasons so I'm not sure I want to take a goalie the first round. Maybe, if we're talking Vas at 10th overall. Currently, my top 12 are:

    1. McDavid (non discussion imo)
    2. Draisaitl (I think he's a definitive #2)
    3. MacKinnon (high points total, good goals total, high SOG)
    4. Matthews (good points total, high goals total, high SOG)
    5. Kucherov (I'd hate to pick here because I won't risk my season on an injury prone player but Kuch is hard to resist when he's healthy)
    6. Makar (I've never drafted a Dman in the first round, but Makar 6th overall or later would change that)
    7. B. Tkachuk (I think with Ottawa's additions, he'll score more points and still be a beast for PIM, SOG, and Hits)
    8. Barkov (love Barkov and Hubs leaving shouldn't affect him because they rarely played together and the PP sucked last season anyway. If he plays with Tkachuk he should break 100 points)
    9. Kaprizov (this kid is good and I'd gamble on him this season)
    10. Vasilevskiy/Shesterkin (in this order, if one were available here I'd maybe take either of these 2)
    11. Ovechkin (SOG, Hits, goals and LW)
    12. Panarin/Rantanen/Marner/Huberdeau/Stamkos (currently I'd rank these 5 similarly and would have to actually look at stats to know which I like best)

Couple guys I'm curious about late 1st/early 2nd round are JT Miller, E. Kane, and M. Tkachuk. If I'm toward the end of the 1st round and I can get a 100 point player and then a PPG player who adds hits, SOG, or PIMs, I'll take a soft winger like Panarin, Huberdeau, Marner, or Rantanen and then a banger like JT Miller, E. Kane, or M. Tkachuk. I think it's a bad idea in multi-cat leagues to focus on only high scoring players but also to focus on only banger players. Gotta have a balance.
14 team, H2H, daily start, min. 3 goalie appearances, 3 Keepers (round drafted+3) with 1 Goalie max.
    G, A, P, PPP, +/-, PIM, SOG, Hits // W, SV, GAA, SV%, SHO

    3C: Norris, Danault, Barbashev (LW)
    3RW: Tippett (LW), Roy, Frederic
    3LW: Knies, Ehlers, Foegele
    4D: Dobson, Gostisbehere, Orlov, Power
    2G: Lyon, Husso
    1Util: M. Foligno (LW, RW)
    4Bench: Brossoit, Werenski, Marchenko, Rossi
    2IR: Zegras

    Keepers: Dobson (6th), Tippett (11th), Norris (14th)
