I did my quick calculation of best & worst off-night teams.
This is done using following "formula".
1. Sum the total number of NHL-team-night games each week: 274-MON, 492-TUE, 232-WED, 536-THU, 240-FRI, 614-SAT, 236-SUN.
(For context, last year's numbers were as follows.....................: 226-MON, 490-TUE, 250-WED, 508-THU, 290-FRI, 558-SAT, 302-SUN)
So Monday games are way up this year (+50) and games on Friday are way down (-50) with Saturday way up (+56) and Sunday way down (-66)
As usual, the NHL is a TUE-THU-SAT heavy league schedule... so any teams with games on MON/WED/FRI/SUN will help you by pushing some of your players onto the "thin" nights... which keeps you from having too many players (and therefore a "benching") on heavy nights. This is critical in H2H where every start counts and getting 85 player games in a H2H week compared to your opponent's 78 players... can make a difference.
2. Each team has their own number of games on each night, that amount is divided by the NHL-sum (see #1) to give the team a "share" each night.
ex. WAS: 9-MON, 14-TUE, 8-WED, 19-THU, 6-FRI, 18-SAT, 8-SUN
ex. MON: 7-MON, 19-TUE, 7-WED, 19-THU, 5-FRI, 22-SAT, 3-SUN
Washington's 8/236 share on a Sunday night gives them a .034 share for Sunday.
Montreal's 22/614 share on a Saturday night gives them a .036 share for Saturday.
So Washington's 8 games on a "thin" night are worth about as much as Montreal's 22 games on a "heavy" night.
3. The list (BEST - to - WORST):
.254 Anaheim (back on top!... they are yearly "Top 3" team here)
...
...
...
...
...
.236 Winnipeg (!!! has lots of Fri/Sun games)
.236 Arizona (college rink!)
.232 NY Rangers (splits MSG with Knicks)
.229 Colorado
.228 Minnesota
.227 Chicago
.225 NY Islanders
.224 Vancouver
...
(lots of teams in the .209-to-.222 range)
...
...
...
.202 Washington (they were a top team last year... and oddly drop to bottom four this year)
.200 Nashville
.199 Montreal (VERY Tu/Th/Sat heavy schedule)
.198 Los Angeles (VERY Tu/Th/Sat heavy schedule... surprising given the Lakers and Clippers also share CRYPTO.com arena, form. Staples Center)
Notes:
Context of the .254 BEST score to the .198 WORST score might be that ANA players are (perhaps) about 25% better than LA players at helping to avoid "same night benchings" of heavy-night play.
However, this factor only comes into consideration in H2H leagues with fairly high starter-to-bench ratios. (So... if you have 9F, and 4F on bench... there could be Saturday nights where you have to bench 2 of 11 forwards playing)
Dear ericdaoust -
Your work on the same night schedule is truly outstanding! I am a newcomer here (though I have been reading dobber hockey for years), and your attention to detail is phenomenal!
Thank you for all of your hard, dedicated work!
Be Well,
Bri
Question - does anybody have skills to run the NHL schedule for the sake of determining the following:
1. What dates during year have greatest difference between team with most GP and least GP? (ex. Say, Jan 7th... TOR has played 38gp and STL has played 30gp: 8gp difference)
2. What teams have greatest & least "density" of games smashed into some "more than 2 week" range? (i.e. Maybe STL plays 15gp in 28 nights from Feb 16-Mar 15.)
A few of us play in a league where you have only a few changes during year.
If you could jump off a 38gp player (and keep his points) and onto a 30gp player (and gain his points), then you might effectively roster a player playing 90gp (38+52).
That's where I'm going with this post.
