Default Daryl Katz (Oilers Owner) Civil Suit

Daryl Katz, Owner of the Oilers has had accusations of pay for ..."fun" in the past that include offering a married actress money for said "fun", but now we have some much more disgusting accusations.

In the defense of Katz (such as it is), the person accusing him is not the girl in question, but the person that the girl is suing for sexual abuse... so you know, take that for what it's worth. If she were suing Katz it would be a different matter.

Yeah - Cause all the Oilers fans out there wear their favourite owner's jersey to the games...

The Oilers are still going to be a great product on the ice...

Now that we don't have to compare the inverse trajectories of the two Alberta teams anymore, the real issue at hand...

The problem with this story, and the Team Canada incident, is that we (the general public) don't have nearly enough information to draw informed conclusions.

It wouldn't surprise me if Katz is guilty here, but the story seems confusing. I have read that the victim said Katz didn't do anything, and that the real assailants are the ones who inserted Katz' name into the conversation. That seems plausible. However, I really don't know what to think. For now, I will withhold final judgement on Katz until more details emerge.

I mention the Team Canada incident by comparison because I'm also withholding final judgement on which players were involved and which weren't until more details emerge. With all the misinformation on the Internet, and some players releasing carefully-worded statements and some not, it is too confusing for me to know which players were involved.

Both stories sicken me, and all the guilty parties should be severely punished, but I honestly don't know which persons are guilty and which ones are not.

The only thing I know for sure, based on all these disturbing stories that have been coming out about male athletes and men in power sexually assaulting women (Boucher, Virtanen, Quebec gymnastics sandal, etc.), is that the world is a scary place for women. As a father of an 19-year old daughter, I worry for her and wish she didn't have to live in a world like this.

And unfortunately this isn't limited to the sports world. A young University student I know was recently stabbed in the thigh with a needle, fell unconscious, and was nearly raped (if not for the intervention of by-standers). The police investigated and told the family that this sort of incident has been happening quite a bit at various bars and campuses in Ontario of late. There are some very disturbed men out there who prey on women and more needs to be done by society to teach young men to respect and cherish women. Unfortunately none of this is new. It has been happening for generations, but we are all made more aware of these incidents now because of the Internet and social media, which is mostly a good thing (if it helps lead to change), but caution is required because the court of public opinion does not have all the facts and can rush to judgement too quickly.

Great post. Most sensible post on this topic I have seen on this forum. One thing to add is a big part of improving the situation for women, and children, would be for people in charge at institutions who often are aware of abuse happening having the courage to speak out. I can't just blame the individuals who knew but kept silent as I suspect they had good reasons not to speak out. It would be nice if the 'culture' at places like the CBC, BBC, Boy Scouts, Catholic Church, military services, Penn State, Gymnastics USA and on and on was such that whistleblowers felt safe to say something. It wouldn't stop the abuse but it would at least stop it much earlier and perhaps act as a deterrent.

    Absolutely agree.

As much as the incidents themselves are sickening, so are the cover-ups and lack of investigation/accountability committed by certain organizations. I'm appalled by the actions (or lack of actions) taken by Hockey Canada and the London Police following the WJ incident. I'm equally appalled that the USNDT only moved Boucher to another billet home after his incident. I won't go so far as to say that these organizations encourage violence against women (though I feel some might say that), but they certainly do their part in making the assailants feel entitled and invulnerable.

The article is somewhat confusing (by quick read at work), but I fail to see the issue against Katz here ???

It showed a text exchange between him and the woman and she was more than happy to accept the deal. The alleged abuse wasn't directed at Katz either.

Unless I'm missing something doesn't look like Katz did anything wrong?

There is an initial law suit between Male A and Female A made by 7 ex Ballerinas for alleged abuse, including Ballerina A. Male A and Female A went "we aren't going down alone." mode and they opened a civil suit against Katz saying Ballerina A told them she was paid $75,000 to have sex with Katz and that Ballerina A's mom helped it all when Ballerina A was under 18yrs old.

Katz is saying the $75k was for Ballerina A's time as his media company was going to do a movie about Ballerina's and was paying Ballerina A for her involvement in the research portion of the movie. The texts don't really show that, but more of gifts. However, that's not certain.

Oh I get it more now thanks.
I thought it said she wasn't underage when 'insert what went on with Katz" happened.
I guess that's the issue they are disputing.

Some of us have the mental capacity to process things beyond the tribalistic aspect of the on ice results of this stupid hobby, but unsurprisingly you consistently prove you have the mental capacity of a peanut.

Neg-rep incoming from the peanut lmao….

If you hate this “stupid hobby” so much why are you on a site that deals specifically with said “stupid hobby” that you seem to have such a disdain for? The problem isn’t hockey the problem is the culture surrounding the sport in Canada. There’s so much “pride” in being a hockey player in this country. It’s our sport but it’s becoming an obsession. The parents have to be rich to put their kids in high level hockey. The parents live vicariously through these kids giving them everything and anything they want because they are the little superstars. In every small town as these kids progress they become the stars in these towns and in their schools and practically get away with murder. The parents continue to overlook the behaviour and are too busy earning the big money to actually parent and we grow up with extremely talented, but extremely entitled, lawless young men with no real moral compass and what they do know is shaped by family guy and pornography. But yes let’s blame the sport. It must be all the skates and sticks and pucks that are causing these atrocities.
