Senators buy out Colin White

#Sens have placed Colin White on unconditional waivers for purposes of a buyout. They will save $10.5 million in real cash because White is only 25.

Cap charge is less than $900,000 for five of next six years with one season as a cap credit, per @CapFriendly.

2022-23: $875,000
2023-24: $875,000
2024-25: -$625,000 (cap credit)
2025-26: $875,000
2026-27: $875,000
2027-28: $875,000

They have about $27m in cap this yr. Josh Norris, Mathieu Joseph, Erik Brannstrom, Victor Mete and Alex Formenton as the RFAs that need a new deal this yr. Stutzle next yr, Connor Brown a UFA next yr.

Bit surprised by the buyout this yr, it's not like they needed the cap unless they are going to throw money at a UFA, and there's a lot of reports they are going to be in on a lot of UFAs.

Perhaps the Sens are getting serious here and looking to make a UFA splash. The right player or two could make them a legit contender to make the playoffs. We'll see.

Colin White turns 26 in Jan30, so they had a few months to buy him out prior to him getting the 2/3rds buyout rule. I guess that was a reason why they bought him out in 2022 vs 2023, and might as well do it in before the draft/FA for trades/signings.

This only happened because of the cheap buyout window closing when he turns 26. He'll have no problem signing on with another team.

It's a good move. You can't pay that much to a guy that can't crack the top 6 and is no longer even showing the potential to be in the top 6. Wish him well elsewhere, but from a business perspective, they seems like a no brainer...

So you trust the pro scouting of Pierre Dorion to find those right players? Dorion? The same guy that traded for Josh Brown, Gudbranson, Stepan, Murray all within the last two years? Dorion, the same guy that saw Colin White do nothing the season after trading Mark Stone away for peanuts and still sign him to the contract he just bought out?

If Dorion wasn’t Melnyk’s personal Martha and Handmaid for the last decade, he would have been banished to being an assistant amateur scout somewhere about 6 years ago.
