Default DeAngelo to shop his services…

Tony DeAngelo has permission from Carolina to "shop his services," according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
DeAngelo is a pending restricted free agent and he has arbitration rights after he completed a one-year, $1 million contract. He is coming off a productive 2021-22 campaign with the Hurricanes and said after the postseason that he would prefer to re-sign with the team.
What do you guys see for Tony DeAngelo with this news?
I thought he was a lock on my keeper list being the top option in Carolina…
Now if he’s going to sign elsewhere, he may be in a position where he’s no more the top offensive D of his team…
    I’m a bit concerned…
    Are you?

I wouldn't be too concerned. You should've expected this, and he'll probably only move if he can get a contract that will give him a big enough payday to give him a guaranteed role. He seems like a guy who was very likely to be motivated on a 1 year deal to get paid.

The issues does arise if he moves somewhere they have an internal young guy who fits in a PP1 type of role that's unproven, and DeAngelo flops, gets hurt/suspended, or something and that guy takes off.

I'd figure he'll be in a plum role, but he may not be on as a good a team.

on any other team id worry a bit more but the way dundon does things in carolina is very different from every other team. this is the same owner that offererd 6.X million AAV to attempt to keep Dougie Hamilton iirc (who ended up getting 9m AAV)

carolina has an internal budget per player they wont exceed so if tony can get himself a better deal elsewhere his agent is welcome to both find a trade partner and negotiate a contract with the other team. if you cant find that deal out there though....youre basically coming back to dundon begging haha

    I'll predict a draft-day trade:
TonyD to Florida for Brandon Montour + mid/late round 2022 pick.

Upgrade for Florida. He'd fit in well with that team: 4yr x $5m. (so... a $1.5m cap increase on Montour's $3.5m)
They can roll either Ekblad or TonyD out onto PP1 or PP2, interchangeably.
It adds a little extra even-strength offense to the Florida defense.

What doesn't work - too many RH defensemen in Florida already.

Carolina is an interesting team. They just conduct their business unlike the rest of the league.

DeAngelo is a very talented player, but is also a very one-dimensional D. His value is always going to be at risk, whether in Carolina, or elsewhere. Could be an upcoming prospect, a coach that doesn't like his playing style, off-ice issues, or many other reasons.

I'm not sure who else is on your roster, but in a 12 team keep 6 league, I have trouble seeing DeAngelo as a keeper. In theory, that makes him a top 72 player in your league, and a top 60ish skater. For what it's worth, Dobber has him ranked 108 among skaters in points only keeper leagues (which excludes goalies). I think your other 5 keepers are all solid options, but DeAngelo is the weakest link. I'd try to find an upgrade there, or explore other options.

We like to speculate, analyze and then speculate and analyze some more. Perhaps to a fault? Remove all the chatter and speculation and look at the numbers. What you see is a player who is very arguably an elite offensive NHL defensemen IMO. How many fantasy GM's passed over DeAngelo last year based, not on the numbers, talent and potential, but on the speculation and chatter? Did they make a mistake? I think so. To directly answer the question, no, I am not concerned. Whether DeAngelo signs with the Canes or somewhere else you have a defensemen who has clearly demonstrated his fantasy (and real world) worth. If he's not "the guy" he will be part of a blue chip blue line, Ekblad and DeAngelo in Florida is a nice example. Not sure that's going to happen but he either remains in Carolina or moves to a similar situation as suggested by Pengwin7 IMO.

It's rare offensive defensemen exceeds expectations on new teams in the first yr. Be cautious. Below are FA signings first yrs on a new deal with a new team:
    Hamilton - 62gp/30pts
    Barrie - 56gp/48pts (1yr), 73gp/41pts (3yr)
    Jones - 78gp/51pts
    Toews - 53gp/31pts
    Gardiner - 68gp/24pts

With DeAngelo, his production depends where he goes, the new teams Offensive Defenseman hold on the role, when he signs (if he's signed in late August/early September it's less time around the team). At this point, I don't think it's even really worth guessing what happens until he finds his home. His production for a team is 1 dimensional, and most teams have someone in that role already. The guys above that got points were gifted PP1 roles in the yrs they produced in the points department. With Barrie the yr he started fighting for the PP1 role, his production dropped.

In addition to what has been said already, I think his market will be restricted by teams that will be weary of his history. He was bought out less than a year ago. Dressing room considerations are real. If he doesn't get the playing time he wants will he become more of a problem than an asset? I think he has painted himself into a corner and while last year certainly helps get him away from those walls, he may need more years of good behaviour before he is able to land another long-term deal at significant money.

I don't think he gets 5M. there's the obvious risk factor plus he doesn't play big minutes.

I hope you're right but there is always one GM you can count on to do something stupid.

I think ~$5M makes sense... but would be surprised if he doesn't end up with a handful of $6M+ offers.

The league is slowly changing for the better... but I think we continue to underestimate the amount of stupidity that remains embedded throughout the league and the decision makers running a lot of the franchises.

DeAngelo was given 1M$ to prove himself and he finished 16th in D-man points leader (missing 18 games).
I don't see any bad mouth about him this season with the Carolina Hurricanes,

I don't see why he need to accept a discounted contract because of something that happened 2 years ago but I understand why a NHL team don't want to sign him long term (4+ years).
I see some similitude in his game with Kevin Shattenkirk in his early career and he signed a 4x4.25m contract (2013-2016) and 4x6.65m (2017-2020 that was bought out in 2019).
    Something around 5m$ is reasonable

I think Carolina works out a way to keep him. They have nice Dmen, but none could match Antny's PP success when he was out with injury. He was getting a tad mouthy (we'll call it confident or comfortable for now) in some late season/playoff interviews, so I would say that a long term deal is risky. 3 years max and 5M per sounds about right... out of respect for what Rod did for him, he should consider saying yes to anything Carolina offers north of 3.5/yr.
