I had Mateychuk about 15 spots higher than Jiricek in my rankings, so there are a few of us out there that have them in that order![]()

Defensemen prospect draft positions is VERY league specific.
Jiricek seems like he's gonna be a HIT, BLK kind of guy from what I read... but maybe only a 40pt guy.
Mateychuk probably has 60pt upside, but may not be a HIT, BLK guy.
So those two could flip-flop.
From my experience, it's really really hard to know what kind of HIT, BLK levels you are getting from D-prospects.
Personally, with CBJ - I dropped BOTH guys pretty far since neither is sniffing PP1 on a CBJ team with Werenski.
Not sarcasm. I know the consensus has Jiricek as one of the top-two, but those who have him above Nemec say they have him there just because they're wary of Nemec's production. The ones who have Nemec higher actually talk about his skills and why he's going to translate. His high PIM numbers are also a bit concerning, and I've just heard awesome things about the other three defencemen Mateychuk, Mintyukov, and Korchinski.
I think my final list had them at:
2) Nemec
7) Mateychuk
12) Mintyukov
15) Korchinski
21) Jiricek

If you're looking at any sort of NHLe score, you're likely to rate Mateychuk very high. For instance, Mason Black's pNHLe, which you can find on Dobberprospects profiles has Mateychuk 2nd highest at 90, behind only Lane Hutson. Leagues without much track record don't have pNHLe scores, so neither Jiricek, nor Nemec have scores here so you have to rely on other sources, but FWIW, a pNHLe of 90 in a draft year is one of the highest you'll see for a draft eligible defenseman. Consider some of the lottery selected defensemen from the past few seasons:
Quinn Hughes 2018 - 1.7 - pNHLe 83
Evan Bouchard 2018 - 1.10 - pNHLe 89
Bowen Byram 2019 - 1.4 - pNHLe 94
Jamie Drysdale 2020 - 1.6 - pNHLe 75
Owen Power - 1.1 - pNHLe 67
Luke Hughes 2021 - 1.4 - pNHLe 78
I'm always weary of taking draft year dmen as they take longer to develop and longer to make an impact on fantasy squads (I'd much rather trade for a sure thing or pick one up in FA). Granted there have been some major outliers to that (cough, Makar, cough, cough). I broke my rule this year on Nemec and Hutson for different reasons. Nemec just looks so much more physically mature for his age and his track record against men albeit a weaker league has me thinking he's a high floor with a good sized ceiling. Hutson all the IQ and skills but lacking the size. If the NHL continues to trend toward skill he could be a major home run swing, especially fantasy wise. As for Mateychuk, I like his game but think his scoring might not be as translatable and actually had Mintyukov ahead of him. I saw a lot of knocks on his skating and for a 5'11" dmen who relies on high risk plays that won't fly in the NHL.

Agreed but I usually slot in that 4th D via our offseason draft. I hate drafting prospect D as they usually pan out after their prospect games limit and forces me to roster a 20-25 pt D-man for a few seasons before he breaks out.
Nonetheless, I know I gotta work on that position
