He wasn't taken in my draft last year. Where would he fit this year? Worth taking top 5 given his development?

    Thanks

    Should say it's points only.

Not sure about top 5, but I would say he's a top 10 (If we're just talking about draft eligible players).

Would put Wright, Cooley, Slavkovsky, Nemec ahead of Johnston. Then there are a few names I would put at around his level, really depends on where a lot of these players end up as well. Johnston I would like better if he was in say Seattle or Minnesota Or Islanders prospect system as there is a lot of room for centers to get a lot of ice time there, being a Dallas prospect and them already having Sequin and Hintz as well as fellow prospects Bourque, Stankoven (C/RW) and Dellandrea, it's crowded up the middle and even if he converts to wing, will be a lot of bodies competing for top six time and pp time.

In a vacuum though, I'd say Johnston is a top 10 pick in this draft, top 5 might be pushing it a bit though.

Just wanted to update. Right now Johnston leads entire CHL in playoff points, the Spitfires are in the OHL finals tied 1-1. His coach compared him to Bergeron and says he might have a chance of even being better, would take that with a grain of salt, most junior coaches always talk up their stars. That being said though, from what I've read of the kid, he doesn't have any real deficiencies in his game, the only real knock on him is his skating, which is fine, just not great.

At this point I might consider Johnston a top 5 now, I think outside of Wright and Slavkovsky, there isn't anyone who I would put clearly a tier above him. Using Dobber tiers system, say Wright and Slav are tier 0, Johnston and the other top end talent in the draft would be tier 1, some differences here and there, but at this point, all are about equal to meeting their top end potential.

If Johnston can end up on that 1st line and top pp unit in a few years in Dallas with Robertson, Heiskanen, Hintz, he could put up some pretty good numbers.

Every league is unique but among forwards, in most leagues I'm assuming he'd go after Wright, Cooley, Slafkovsky, Savoie.

    Somewhere in the Kemell/Nazar/Gauthier tier.

Another thing to consider is that he is actually drafted by good team where most of those top guys will go to bottom feeders..i think NJ is only team that has a chance to drastically improve if all are healthy..but we also been saying that for few years now.

Really does depend on where a player ends up and how long you're willing to wait on said player. That being said, creme always does rise to the top, eventually, just might take a little bit more time.
If Wright goes to Mtl, he has Suzuki to compete with for that 1st line C spot, he might eventually get it, but might take him a good 3+ years being in the NHL before he does take it away from Suzuki.

If NJ does end up taking Slavkosky, I'm already drooling, I think there is a big chance he could be seeing top pp and top line within a couple of years there. A top line of Slavkosky-Hughes-Holtz could be insane, not to mention they got Hamilton/Severson on the backend right now and Hughes coming up in a couple of years as well.
Look at Minny with Kaprizov, team with limited offense who don't score a lot of goals to one of the highest scoring teams in the league.
