URGENT - Is Kaapo Kakko worth a lotto pick in '23? - REP

i have 2 lotto selections for next years Bedard Draft, one would be a mid place finisher, teh other very near bottom

Kakko and a 2nd rounder(23) for
23 1st round pick (mid pack finisher)

Assuming you are getting Kakko, correct? I think it's important to understand how the lotto works... ie. how are the odds skewed? If you can get a decent return, then I would be open to moving your lower pick, especially if the odds are fairly limited.

Having said that, I'm personally not sold on Kakko as a huge fantasy contributor. I think he will be a complete/well-rounded player, but I'm not yet convinced he has the offensive nose to be a huge points producer. So if the math works out that keeping the pick gives you a noticeably better chance at drafting Bedard, then I would probably hold onto it, unless a better offer comes along.

How does the draft order assignment work? Is it strict reverse order of finish, or do some or all non-playoff teams have a chance? That's important.

Also where do you think that 2nd will end up falling?

Need more info, but based on what I know, I'd rather the 2023 pick.

Without knowing all the information about the lottery, I'd be inclined to keep the pick. I'm not one hundred percent sold on Kakko as an elite point producer yet, and I think that draft is shaping up to be a franchise changer.

Ok the draft order is based on the nhl draft. Our lotto team is based on where we end up and are paired with the same nhl team. Last place this year was tied to mtl second last was paired to Ariz etc. so we draft as per the lotto for the first round. Top three draft 8 9 and 10th respectively.

I have 2 first rounders next year, as I said I expect one to be near bottom and one in mid pack finishers.

Now all this being said I made the deal

The expected mid pack ‘23 and my 5oa this year for
Kakko ‘23 second and 4oa this year

However I was able to negotiate a caveat to this, 1oa protection as it were. Such that IF this pick I moved ends up earning 1OA at the draft lotto, I retained the right to swap out for my other pick. That caveat is transferable to whoever owns it at lotto time. I cannot move my other 1st rounder as a result or the ‘Bedard Clause’ Is negated.

Only the 1oa slotting triggers the Bedard Clause tho.

That seems like a solid move for you, I like the protection, and the pick slot upgrade to 4th this year. You might find that you have a cluster from say 4-7, while somebody wants that #4 pick. Since the mid pack team could possibly end up in the top 3, could be a nice upgrade.

i dont even think Bedard is a lock to go first..its 4 headed monster going into that draft...i think its huge mistake to trade pick that can be anywhere from 1-4 in 2023

i probably wouldnt want Kako vs 1-4 this year either tbh...but thats me.

as good as the top 4 are in 2023, a lot of people have written off kakko, but I haven't. the rangers are stacked and his deployment sucks. this season he was riddled with injuries, couldn't stay healthy which kills his ability to ramp up during the regular season. I'd say give it another year or two until he pops off, you won't regret it.
