Two lotteries will be conducted today, one for the top pick, and a subsequent one to determine second overall.

As was the case last year, winning a lottery doesn’t jump you right to the top, but instead moves you 10 places up the order. That means only 11 teams have a shot at winning the first pick; if one of the teams with the 12th- to 16th-best odds wins the first lottery, it moves up 10 spots, but the first pick goes to the worst team, which would be Montreal. So while the Canadiens have an 18.5% chance of being the winner of the lottery, their chances of getting the first overall pick are actually 25.5% (their assigned 18.5% plus the total of 7.0% held by the five teams with the lowest odds).

But ya this is a big day for about 5 teams. I would really like Seattle to jump up to 1st overall, and the conspiracy theories would run rampant.

Actually it's only about 75% because if anyone from 12-16 range wins, then MTL keeps it.

As a Habs fan, the top pick would be great, but this isn't like next year where Bedard clearly looks like he's on a tier of his own. Wright is probably still the consensus first pick but the top 3 looks good enough to not make this very stressful to me.

No, only the top 2 picks are now lottery picks. Worst the Habs can do is 3rd. I still hope they win because their last two top picks were at 3rd and didn't pan out great for the team(Galchenyuk and Kotkaniemi). But they should still get a very good player regardless of where they fall.

Yeah, I agree I'd rather have the top 3 picks in the lottery and all teams being able to win the first pick. I guess enough GMs complained when some teams (Oilers, Rangers) got lucky too often.

I think Caufield constitutes a hit for now. But yeah, overall, the Habs have been terrible at drafting/developping/retaining their 1st round picks.

Pretty much. If we want to be generous, we can add Sergachev in 2016 even if they traded him before he could make an impact.
