Same here. Vasi is a sexy pick choice, but often goalies vary so much year over year. Mind you, Rantanen gets hurt a lot, haha.

I don’t think he actually missed games alot the last couple years. 3 this year and 4 the year before(maybe some covid games missed too?). I think he was just unlucky early in in his career(one year half gsmes missed but the others around 8 or less?)

It does depend how your league value goalies as well, if I can get Saros or Mark with say my 4th pick then for me its an easy decision to go Rants over Vas

I pretty much 1,000% guarantee that those guys (Markstrom & Saros) won't be chosen in the top 4 next year. Too many other tempting names (Matthews, Marner, Bedard, Aho, etc.)

Now I am an Avs fan so I could be bias but I also watch almost all the Avs games and Rant is elite and can drive a line on his own and is not a by product of Mack, having Mack with him is just icing.

Totally agree - once I looked closer I saw the perception was an incorrect one. He’s now my top target for next draft!

Update: I ended up getting 1st and 3rd overall in the draft lottery. I'm thinking Rantanen for number one, then wait and see who goes 2nd, and take Vasilevskiy if he's still there are 3rd, or Rielly if he's not. Think Rielly is the right play in that slot, over Guentzel or Hellebuyck?

Goalies are voodoo, you say? I say that Vasilevskiy's worst rank in wins in any of the past 5 seasons is 1st. Yes, you read that right. Admittedly he's only led the league in shutouts one of those years. Do I think he's a lock to lead the league in wins next year? No. Do I think he's likely to do it? Yes, as in he's the odds-on favorite.

With pick 3, you do desperately need a D, to upgrade Dunn. However, you also could really use an elite forward. I'd go Rantanen then probably Guentzel at 3. I'm pretty sure a D upgrade can be found in round 2.

I agree - with 1st and 3rd I'd go Vas then one of Rant/Guentzel. Yes you need a D upgrade, but Rant and Guentzel are a tier above Carlson/Rielly in a keeper imo.

Interesting updates: 1) I traded away Demko so now I need a goalie more, and 2) I've now also got the 7th overall pick in this draft. So 1st, 3rd & 7th.

Thoughts now? I still am VERY torn between Vasi & Rantanen. I feel there's an excellent chance either Carlson or Rielly will be there at 7th, so I'll likely take a D-man there.

No. You need a goalie desperately, because you have the Flyers goalie, who is talented, but on a likely bottom 3 team that made their defense worse since last year.

To be clear, you NEED a goalie. So you must get Vasilevskiy, Hellebuyck or hope to find somebody later. It's either:

Vas at 1, and your choice of forward at 3
Rantanen at 1 and hope Vas drops to 3, which he shouldn't
Two skaters first then Hellebuyck if he falls to 7.
3 skaters and get your golaie later, but know they aren't likely keeper worthy - heck Hart wasn't remotely keeper worthy.

1) Fair points - I'll definitely take Vasi 1st overall. Then (I'm thinking) probably whoever is left of Rantanen or Guentzel at 3rd. I was thinking D at 7th, but you figure I should got for Helle if he's still there? It's wins and shutouts only - are the Jets good enough? There are also still a few goalies after them, but definitely not many super solid choices.

2) Don't worry - for the Demko trade I got plenty of good stuff to make it worth while short and long term.

3) I own 1/2 the first round next year, where Markstrom, Bobrovsky & Saros are going to be available. If I don't get Helle this year I can find a good stopgap and snag a top goalie next year as well. We keep ten, so if I had Vasi & one of those others I'd be set for years.

Now that you have the 7th also, you can take Vas with 1st and know you will still get a stud W and D.
