I personally don't care about the original statement, or those who are calling to cancel Disney.

Cancel culture is idiotic, no matter which "side" is trying to cancel something. Maybe this is just the other side of "playing the game".

Want to acknowledge the irony in your crying about cancel culture now?

People upset and saying people have thin skin about people who are upset about a topic that might directly effect them is the ultimate meme opposition to me.

Well, way to ignore the question. I never asked if you cared about it, I asked if you were willing to acknowledge that it is happening.

And, not sure what you are referring to here, to be honest. I am ok with "cancel culture". I think people should have a right to not buy Dr Seuss books or cancel their Disney subscriptions because they disagree with something they have done. I have never "cried" about cancel culture.

Ya that always seemed strange to me too. It is being a "snowflake" about the "snowflakes".

2 sides of the same snowflake essentially.

When people whine about cancel culture they're often just whining about free speech being exercised and free market capitalism working as intended, while convincing themselves they are the biggest supports of the aspects of society that they have an absolute disdain for, when those they disagree with take advantage of them.

Like it or not, whatever you want to label as cancel culture (which is ludicrous to insist is a new thing, I think we're nearing the 20th anniversary of trying to cancel french fries) is just inherent in a free society and as long as it's not perpetrated by government you would have to be an incredibly thin-skinned, fragile, and soft individual to get all hot and bothered by what is essentially other people not being exactly like you.

If only people would stop focusing their attention and energy on stupid shit and instead re-directed them to things that really matter to all of us, like climate change.

I agree.... people should have the right to not buy Dr. Seuss or cancel Disney subscription. As long as the people who choose to continue to buy Dr. Seuss or continue to watch Disney are not forfeited the opportunity do so.

So what's the work around for that? Enough people say that they aren't going to by Dr Seuss books, and you agree that is their right. Now, the publisher says "hrrm... We need to pull this because it's costing us dollars". Shouldn't companies also have the right to publish what they think is profitable and not publish what they think is not? Should we be able to tell a record company that they aren't allowed to discontinue selling the album of the recently discovered pedophile?

It does get taken too far a lot of the time (in my opinion), but the pendulum needs to swing the other direction in order to settle in the middle.
You know what, that actually makes a lot of sense and I agree the pendulum needs to swing to the other extreme in order to gather enough momentum so that it settles somewhere in the middle. I also agree that certain groups - women, gays, and other minorities - have made good progress. Reading your post, I feel embarrassed about my "good old days" comment because it was totally insensitive to some groups which is absolutely true. Thank you for calling me out.

What annoys me is all of these other trends and fake "causes" trying to hop on the bandwagon to make noise, which in some ways takes attention away from matters that truly deserve it. It's just gone way overboard in today's society.

A few silly examples off the top of my head:

-the whole pronoun thing - he/him she/her they... It's completely ridiculous and redundant
-classic iconic sports franchises now under heat for their names or logos: redskins, blackhawks, etc
-digging back decades into someone's social media history and "cancelling" them for something they said ages ago which would have been totally normal and socially acceptable at that time

Pronouns don’t matter to you, because you’re not the demographic pronouns matter to. Talk to people in those communities, and people using pronouns when they don’t need to matters to them.

“Racist” logos don’t matter to you, but talk to the cultures affected by them and largely (but not universally) it matters to them.

It’s easy to say these things don’t matter when they don’t affect you, and it’s hard to understand their affect no matter how hard you try.

Of course, cancel culture doesn’t exist. Cancel culture is peak capitalism, it’s just that it doesn’t benefit those who traditionally benefit from capitalism and it bothers them. They’re supposed to “win” and they can’t handle when they lose.

Does Disney care about LGBQT2+ rights? Honestly probably not. They spoke up because they knew it was more likely to help their business than hurt. Go on and try and cancel Disney. Good f***ing luck lol.

You had me up until the end. I pretty firmly believe people should call others by the pronoun they prefer. You don't have to understand their reasoning, it's about respecting them. It doesn't really affect you much, so why do you care? If it truly matters to them, then it's not a "fake cause", is it? And, yes, change those sports names. It's time to take racial minorities off the table for sports teams names.

I do agree that people should be cut some slack for shit they did decades ago. I have done things in the past that I am not proud of. Thankfully for me, I don't think it's likely that video surfaces of me going on a racial or homophobic rant anytime soon.

Pronoun thing will likely/should get evolved away anyway when the English language, and other languages too, adapts.
