Default MLB allows new pitch calling device

    Interesting technology.

MLB anticipates that perhaps 15 of the 30 teams will use Pitch Com this year, permitting the catcher to send a signal on a transmitter to the pitcher_along with three other players_removing the need for actual signs. It should speed up the game, and could eliminate sign stealing.

I love it. I watched a few games with college players/minor leaguers using it in a game and they flew through the time between pitches. I really like the idea and the fact the league is giving the option for both strategies is good. I get that "analog sign stealing" is part of the game, but I rather see the game go quicker than a vet relay signs to a batter when on 2B.

This is huge for young players, call ups, foreign players. I love it all.

Being on the ship, I havent had the ability to watch any pre-season games yet. I am home next week for five days (little mini break from the deployment) so I am looking forward to watching some games and seeing how well this works. If it speeds up the game, I am all for it.

From what I've seen, it can remove 10-15min easily. Even it removes 5min, the optics of how much it speeds things up is good. The shake offs and things like that remove so much oomf from momentum. The big thing might be after a homerun, we won't have the same time between pitches to see a highlight like we're used too.

I wondered if it was an earpiece which would be uncomfortable to wear but found this article

“A maximum of five receivers and one transmitter may be in any use at any given time,” MLB wrote in a five-page memorandum Tuesday to general managers, assistant GMs, managers and equipment managers, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press.

A catcher has nine choices on his wristband device: “four seam high inside, curve hi middle, slider hi outside, change mid inside, sinker middle, cutter mid out, splitter low inside, knuckle lo middle, two seam low outside.”

A thin band tucked inside a cap allows the audio to be heard at an adjustable level, envisioned to be used by pitchers, second baseman, shortstops and center fielders.

“When changing pitchers, the manager shall provide a receiver to the replacement pitcher,” the memo said.

Ya, the Jays in a pre-season game had a pitcher come in who wanted to use the system. So they showed the catcher put the transmitter on, and the catcher put the receiver on. It's like a tag thing that goes in the hat. Except the Jays pitcher/catcher couldn't get it to work and the catcher pointed to his head to indicate to use the old system. I wonder if the receiver/transmitters weren't charged lol.

Each team is allowed a max of 5 receivers in play at one time. Catcher, Pitcher, SS, CF, 2B are the positions allowed to use them.

Why does the catcher make the pitch decisions?
    Why not the pitcher?

    Edit:
I guess the catcher needs to know where that ball is headed...

Now teams just hack into that frequency and your all set

    Both make the call kinda.

Catcher knows the scouting report on the players, has the wrist cheat sheet, takes tips from the coach mid AB (See the catcher looking into the dugout). Then he tells the pitcher what he wants, pitcher either agrees or shakes him off if he's not confident in that throw.

Catcher is also the one calling the pitch as if the Pitcher were to throw signs up, the batter can obviously see it. Next reason why the catcher does the signaling is because the fielders need to know the pitch/location so if the pitcher were to throw the signs up they'd be literally showing what he's throwing to the whole stadium.

Don't a lot of managers send calls into the catcher to send to the pitchers?

A lot of young catchers get signs from one of the managers, then relays that to the pitcher. Also some of the stuff they get from the manager is sign routine. Like, "Ok we're going to start using the sign system #2". Sometimes it's, "ok we're attacking inside on this guy", or "nibble on the outsides, if he walks he walks".

So with the younger catchers you see them getting a lot more instructions from the managers, but most of the stuff is strategy and not "Throw FB inside on this pitch". If that makes sense.
