Was busy at work. No was all I had time for.
Going out for lunch... quick answer:
Increasing the severity of punishment does little to deter infractions

It would 100% deter repeat offenders. But I do think once you have concrete "this infraction = this amount of games" would slow down dumb things that happen, and you would start to wonder how long teams would accept things.

I dunno, I think once you set an actual list of "this = this", and remove fines, or increase that fines limit to no upper limit it would at least do something.

I don't think so... (for the most part)

Players aren't basing their actions on whether or not they will only get a fine or get a suspension.

Players inherently don't want to cause major harm to another (via what happened here). The objective should be rather to get players to be more aware of themselves and others for them to recognize and minimize potential high injury risk plays during game action. Harsher discipline isn't going to change any of that.

Though I do agree fines could be more, because they are a bit of a laughable amount imo (not enough to be felt as a consequence if applied). Especially since the money goes to the NHL Emergency Assistance fund - not too bad of a donation for someone to make.
Having a more structured discipline plan would be nice for the fans so there's no guess work to what the discipline for an incident is going to be, but I also believe every play is different and thus assessed differently.

I'd start off by a better and more consistent enforcement. Some incidents get overlooked whereby similar incidents have resulted in supplementary discipline at other times.

The key word in my previous post was 'should' because in theory they could throw us a curveball instead and standardize their suspensions/fines to less than what it is now leading to less severe injuries because everyone is gonna skate into the corners with their elbows up by default hahahaha

In all seriousness, I do think as a whole there will be less dangerous hits if punishment was both standardized and more severe in both games lost and fines. however, to really change the idiots on the ice it would have to be really really significant consequences. stuff like automatic 1-game suspension for an unintentional hit to the head as initial contact point, 3-game suspension for intentional hit to head, 5-game suspension for clear intent to injure. in my mind the suspensions should stack as well, a predatory hit to the head would be 8-game suspension based on the above example.

this wont happen tho, they hire guys like george parros to run their DOPS. put someone like marc savard or paul kariya whose high skill careers were cut short due to dirty hits

My thought is in line with this. If you make the penalty for these hits high enough players will either learn, or teams won't pay them. Kinda like when the full season lockout stopped and they were calling all these penalties, NHL vets literally couldn't keep up and they got weeded out.

But ya, no way the NHLPA would agree to this as they are more focused right now on protecting a handful of players who do the hurting than the majority of players who get effected by those who hurt. You always see the NHLPA stick up for the guy who's getting suspended, not one the he elbowed in the face.

Calling everything is much different than increasing the suspension amount for them.

The former will have a much greater impact.

Well no one really said increasing the suspension lengths as the only act to stop this stuff. So when you said it wouldn't work I think we all thought you meant calling penalties, and standardizing suspension lengths as not something that would work.

Standardizing isn't the same as increasing the suspension length.

Well the post I first commented on had "a $5000 fine does nothing to deter a player." to end it his post
which led me to believe he had 'harsher penalties' in his thinking.

    Later confirmed by:
"In all seriousness, I do think as a whole there will be less dangerous hits if punishment was both standardized and more severe in both games lost and fines. however, to really change the idiots on the ice it would have to be really really significant consequences."

And now I'm responding to your "
If you make the penalty for these hits high enough players will either learn, or teams won't pay them. Kinda like when the full season lockout stopped and they were calling all these penalties"

Comparing 'increasing the penalty' to 'frequency of calling the penalty. That's the points I was responding to.

I do agree with increasing the frequency. Players will adjust.

"Well no one really said increasing the suspension lengths as the only act to stop this stuff"
Correct, but it's the only aspect I wanted to comment on.

I also think when it comes to fines the amount should scale based on their income, like how speeding ticket $$$ is done in Switzerland (which is something I'd also like to see in Canada).

It is, it's just capped at $5,000. The number was made when the top salary and average salary was never this high. It would need to be in the next CBA agreement and I don't know how much high that would get with the NHLPA accepting it.
