Seems like a pretty crappy hit here. Wonder if he’ll hear from DOPS. H2H Playoffs start and losing Hughes sucks. Hopefully it’s not long.

Plays like this are hard cause Whalstrom is expecting Hughes to take the hit but now is going to get punished because Hughes tries to escape a hit putting himself in a dangerous spot. It's like when a player turns last second to expose his back when along the boards. I dunno how to fix the situation, and I'm not even going to attempt to suggest a fix to stuff like this besides refs policing games to the rulebook. Not to the gameflow. Would remove a lot of issues, maybe even plays like this get lowered because if you call the game to the rulebook, then players are just more likely to avoid doing this hit.

I learned very early on in my playing days that you don’t stick your knee out when attempting to make a hit. The only think that happens is injury to the other guy. These guys know better. This is all on Wahlstrom. Did he mean to hurt him? Absolutely not. Do NHL players know not to lead with the knee? Absolutely. This is a really bad hit.

i agree. theres no circumstance where you need to stick your legs/knee out unless youre just outright beat. if youre outright beat and stick your leg out to get 'a piece of him', youre a effin piece of shit.

sometimes accidents happen, this was not an accident even if it wasnt intentional.

A video on twitter shows Hughes walking back to his car with a limp. No brace, no crutch, just a gentle limp. Looks like he took a stinger to the inner thigh. No word out of Devil's camp yet. I didn't dress him this week.

I doubt wahlstrom intended to injure . He's still learning how to time his physical play properly and more often than not does more harm to himself when attempting to hit someone

Age old question, how much should an injury influence the punishment?

Still think it was a tough position for Wahlstrom as he was just trying to make the hit and when a player moves instinct is to still get in front of the player and that includes (wrongly) getting your legs in front of the hit.

Def should be a penalty. And I wonder how many of these plays get weeded out if you call the game to the rulebook and not to manage the game, because players would just step away from hitting and these things would stop. However, it wouldn't give the people who want justice...justice here.

Sucks for Hughes, but I also wonder how much of it is because the Devils are essentially out and whats the point in bringing him back.

If the NHL wants to be considered a legitimate betting platform (and they obviously do) the rules have got to be called and all this injury mystery has got to stop. As a casual fan/bet maker I look at this whole situation and steer well clear of this Mickey Mouse league.

Standardizing and consistency for suspensions would be significantly better all-around, that should indirectly lead to less dangerous plays out on the ice leading to less injuries.
