If people haven't seen what the history is here it is (in very basic terms):

Putin sees Ukraine as historically part of Russia. In 2014, Russia invaded Crimea, in the south of Ukraine and continues to occupy it. Since 2014, Russian backed separatists and Ukraine's armed forces have been fighting a war in eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in which 14,000+ have died. Putin has now "recognized" the two regions held by Russian backed separatists as independent states and ordered Russian troops there.

Trump said Putin was a "genius" and "very savvy" for his handling of Ukraine and framing the invasion as a "peacekeeping" mission. I don't how much different this would have gone with any other leader for the USA but those aren't words of someone who is strongly against Putin's decision.

But he is in a very different situation than Biden is right now and very well could be siding with a large power to support him in his next selectorial run. Or could be stirring the pot. Who knows.

This needs to put everything in perspective. At this point I don't even want to re visit my old threads I created about Covid. We have all been squabbling over essentially nothing for two years, myself included. What these poor people are going through is horrific. The number one concern should be for the life's of the people in Ukraine.

This is also a lose lose for the rest of the world. Sanctions to Russia will hurt their economy but also increase our cost of living significantly. Which is a fine trade off if it doesn't lead to the more scary scenario, a hot war between two nations with nuclear capabilities. There's been countless pointless wars over the years but this is the first one I can remember that could have devastating affects on all of humanity.
