    Default Generation Players

So I got into a discussion today about Patrick Kane with a Hawks fan and he stated that Kane is a generational talent. I immediately disagreed and said that while he is a first-ballot HOFer, he is not a generational talent. IMO the only generational talents we've had in the last 40 years are: Gretzky, Mario, Crosby, McDavid, Lidstrom, Roy, and Ovie. (I'm probably missing someone) Generational talents are the elite of the elite in the inner sanctum of the HOF. Speaking of Kane, while he is probably my favorite player of all time, IMO Keith was the most important Hawk of their 3 Cups. So what do you think?

I hate the term almost as much as the term "elite".

Patrick Kane is not a generational player. I don't consider Roy one either but that's my opinion.

Agreed, its fun to argue about the definitions of made up terms.
If "Generational" is short hand for "once in a generation" then the list is very short.
    Howe
    Gretzky
    Crosby
    McDavid

That would be the list. Given some overlap I include Richard, Lemieux, Ovechkin.
Orr as a "generational talent" cut short.
No goalies on the list for no real particular reason. I suppose Roy/Brodeur could be on there.

At a minimum you need to be the best player in the league for multiple seasons and put up number well above your peers repeatedly.
    Kane is great. Not generational.

Definitely agree with Lawman here. Generational should mean once in a generation. If a career can last 20 years, to me that would mean the single best player every 20 years? The would mean, for me, that Kane is not there. Actually if that is the criteria, Kane probably doesn't hit the top 5 generational players in the last generation.

Lawman nailed it here. "Generational" to me means "once in a generation" and therefore the list, by definition couldn't contain that many people. It's funny how these kind of questions almost always lead to semantic arguments rather than whether a player should actually be considered "generational" or "elite" or any other term. Kane is a great player but I don't think there are too many that would place him in the generational category. I think the better debate might be whether he is considered elite or just great.
    Without me, it's only "aweso".

Generational is guys everyone can agree on being on the list. If there's debate by anyone they aren't on the list.
