I would be surprised if the Flames move. I think this is just all jockeying for money/power. I could be very wrong on this though as I've gotten kinda numb on this subject and I could be missing info.

I think (as i understand it anyway from watching TSN this AM) the Flames aren't in a position to pay for the extras on the new arena, so tehy backed out of it... as per the agreement, the Flames would be on the hook for any overages on the initial Contract amount, currently being shared by the City and the HC.

it was a small amount so far (nit sure how they can nail it down just yet but...)

Im with 2014OG. I think it's just a lot of jockeying for position and political BS. They aren't going anywhere but they need a new arena.

Also, the owner of Endy (the mattress) company has offered up the $10,000,000 difference in exchange for naming rights on the new arena. At least according to his tweet.

If it was for 2 years it’s a pretty rich deal. If it’s for 20 then yes, pretty cheap. Honda paid $4 mil per year for 15 years for the Ducks arena. TD Bank went 25 years at $5.95 mil per year. Those are a couple of the richest arena naming deals.

Scotiabank paid $800mill for a 20yr deal for the ACC (40m/yr). It's head and shoulders above what others have done, but it's a benchmark now. Staples Center is now Cyrpto.com Arena and that deal was $700mUSD/20yr deal. The Clippers new stadium, their naming rights were sold to Intuit for $500millUSD/23yr.

Offering to settle the difference for naming rights is a great deal and Endy knows that it's way low and they've made this statement as a form of advertisement knowing they'll never have to offer up the money. I doubt the deal is $10mill for 1yr, that's a dumb deal for the Flames to make. There would be tons of companies wanting a 10-20yr deal on a brand new stadium and I'm assuming the team could get a lot of money up front to help build it.

Endy's offer to cover up to $10mill for naming rights is a ploy by Endy for free advertisement.

It is good free PR, but there are a couple of factors.

    1. This is the NHL. It's the #4 North American league right now, and it's got no chance of moving up anytime soon. Comparing NBA deals isn't the same particularly for a marquee franchise.
    2. This is Calgary, which isn't a huge market. Comparing Calgary to someplace like Nashville or Columbus would make sense. Los Angeles it ain't.

I'm guessing Endy's is a Canadian mattress company - just checked and I was right. So this is really a good move for them.

100% which is why it's a brilliant move. Costs you nothing and gets you good press with fans, and your company name out there.
I'm pretty sure one of the porn sites (Bang Bros?) does this often, and everytime a Miami arena deal comes up, knowing full well they would never be agreed to as a naming sponsor.
