First time in recent memory that both Canada & the US men's teams were eliminated before the semi's. Could be the first time ever?

No offensive game changers killed them in this game. Sweden's defense just smothered them in the 3rd period.

Prior to 2002, Canada hadn’t won gold since the 1950s. Bringing pros changed everything. I’m sure this could have happened before, especially before the 1980s when hockey wasn’t as big a program in the USA.

Likely not. You have to understand that the USA is not really a hockey power, and 1980 was called a "Miracle on Ice" because it was. Looking at Wikipedia, Canada didn't even play in 1972 or 1976. So there should be some games where they both weren't in the semis, especially when relying on the US solely.

    2018 - Canada Bronze
    2014 - Canada Gold
    2010 - Canada Gold/US Silver
    2006 - Neither made the semi's
    2002 - Canada Gold/US Silver
    1998 - Canada lost in semi's
    1994 - Canada Silver
    1992 - Canada Silver/US lost in semi's
    1988 - Canada lost in semi's
    1984 - Canada lost in semi's
    1980 - US Gold
    1976 - Canada Boycott
    1972 - US Silver/Canada Boycott

So it happened more recent than I thought - in 2006, but other than that hasn't happened in 50ish years.
