I'm currently sitting in 3rd for league in sig, 36 points behind the leader.
I'm considering offering:

J. Hughes + Pettersson

for

Ovie + P. Kane

Am I shooting myself in the foot if this offer is accepted?

We have monthly scoring periods where you can acquire points through trade, so this deal would bring me close to to being tied for 2nd, still about 20 points out of 1st.

I would still need to make more moves to give myself a fighting chance...possibly move Suzuki and another young player.

Teams in 1st and 2nd have McDavid and Draisaitl on their rosters, respectively.

I feel like I'm taking a big risk with this offer.

Any thoughts...??

assuming you are receiving Kane and Ovi , this is win now move that does help a lot imo. 2-3 years from now you not going to like it very much but thats the decision you need to make

Earlier this year i traded Eichel for Ovi + Latang...also in win now mode.

I like this move for you. There's a real chance that you're still winning this deal 3 years from now. You're certainly winning it this year and likely next.

The real sticking point for me is J. Hughes. I might try offering just Pettersson for Ovechkin and take it from there.

If you're going to do that, I'd offer him the choice of Ovechkin or Kane, as I prefer Kane if all points are equal.

We use monthly scoring periods to track points. Ovechkin currently has 12 points this month compared to Kane's 5 points.
Plus, for obvious reasons, the asking price for Kane will likely be higher than for Ovi.
The other GM is a die-hard Blackhawks fan to boot!
Plus, Ovi will likely be a more desirable target for my competitors. The vultures are already circling, so snagging him away from my competition will give me an edge.
