Byram. He's got an extra year, is a RFA who isn't the #1 guy, and is far less likely to become a pumpkin due to off-ice issues. Expect DeAngelo to go to $6M + next year.

I realized I should probably flesh this out more.

This year: DeAngelo. He's running PP1, and is priced about the same.
Next year: Byram. I don't see any way DeAngelo is playing in the NHL and getting a large raise. Where that will be is unknown. Byram will be making under a million again.
After that: Byram likely on a bridge deal versus DeAngelo on whatever bigger deal he signs. I'll take the talented guy playing for what I expect to be a third of the cost or less on likely a more offensive team.

Byram is a 2nd PP guy at best and will be for some time now. He might not even be Colorado's third best Dman, which is scary because he is good. Give me the guy who runs the PP with little to no competition; DeAngelo.

This is actually a really challenging debate in a cap league imo.

Obviously this year, Tony D has the best value.

Next year... or even the next 2 years... I still think DeAngelo outproduces Byram... but will (likely) cost a lot more so the point-per-$ ratio may be pretty close.

Aside from the standard DeAngelo "risk", I'm also hesitant to think he'll stay in Carolina if they are way apart on salary. The fact that they walked from Hamilton, and the fact that this year Tony D is "proving" his worth again makes me nervous they'll find a deal together.

Byram on the other hand, will either sign a bridge post RFA (helping your cap) or he'll get paid but they'll move Girard out and he'll take over PP2 for good. (There's a chance they could deal him too but I don't see that as likely).

    So this year - ADA.
Next year - ADA but pts/$ might be close
After that - Too hard to call due to the all the variations I mentioned above.

So I likely take ADA but am cognizant I could lose this deal down the road.

    Tough one - good luck.

A talent like Byram finds a way. He’s already better then Girard so there’s no chance Avs trade him away. Long term it’s Byram next 2-3 prob ADA

Byram might not have much of a career if his concussion issues continue. Hard to think long term with a guy like this who's already contemplated retiring. DeAngelo is my choice due to being in a better situation now, because who knows what the future holds for either of them.

DeAngelo and it's not even close. He's one of only a few defensemen who could put up 70+ points. Even if he got 6 or 7 million next year it would still be worth it.
