More of a addition by subtraction for four months.
Vying for a playoff spot - almost seems counter-intuitive.
Even if Eichel is the payoff
I agree, so perhaps that would be why the Flames backed off. On the other hand, it may have been the Pegulas not wanting to take on a hefty contract and instead opt for an ELC as the main piece coming back. Huge risk.

It's always posturing for the fan base. Treliving makes sure all the insiders report he is "in on everything" so he looks busy to the fans and the absentee owner and he can coast on doing nothing.

Roughly a 10-15% chance of becoming a star in the NHL.....so just fine? He's just fine. Definitely not "very good" though.

Obviously the first thought is, that's it? Buffalo doesn't get credit for doing the "best they could in a tough spot". They put themselves in that tough spot.

Flames couldn't beat that? Sure we know why bad teams stay bad, but this is also why mediocre teams stay mediocre, and for that matter, good teams stay good.

The fact Buffalo traded a $10mill cap player who might not play till March (now it's being said 4-5months) midseason is a challenge, let alone getting value.

The roster is humming so don’t upset the Apple cart inserting a young struggling player. Makes sense. Get him some confidence back. He’s a very good player but needs to add size and strength and a bit of explosiveness. Gets pushed off the puck easily.

Cant say I'd blame Adams if he didnt want any part of the Tkachuk negotiating BS in another year. What a pain in the ass that negotiations is going to be, and to possibly lose him for nothing would be enough for me to stay away from him as well if I was Adams.

Tkachuk was a fake thing that was never included, confirmed by Calgary and Buffalo.

Probably from Buffalo's side for the reason I mentioned above, whether Calgary was offering him or not.

What does Vegas do once Pac, Stone, or Eichel become healthy enough to play?

Hope it's worked itself out by then? Otherwise move Smith and/or MacNabb I suppose.

Make another trade because they are well over the cap limit if and when all are healthy.

Agreed in regards to the Flames. Who knows what happens in the real life discussions but I see a lot of high quality prospects in Calgary's system at all positions. I'm not sure how you can't put together a package that could get you Eichel (without having to surrender Tkachuck). How do you not gun harder for a player that is a true 1C and probably a franchise 1C when your current best roster C is who? Monahan? Calgary needed a big move here I believe. Especially when the best 1C in the league is a three hour drive North.

I think a lot of people are discounting the fact that Buffalo didn't retain salary in this trade. That was a big sticking point for them and eliminated a lot of teams out of the gate.

I also listened to the Adams press conference and a couple good questions were asked in regards to retaining salary. The biggest thing right now is Buffalo is BARELY above the league minimum salary cap. One reporter asked Adams why were they not willing to retain salary looking at their position in the salary cap world. Did they not eliminate a better deal from another team if they were willing to hold some cap? Adams kinda skirted the question but they simply were not willing to retain cap. He did say that he told all teams that, and some teams still made offers to him with Buffalo retaining cap, which were quickly dismissed because of the cap retention. That was a big sticking point for them. Eichel still has four more years after this one on his contract and clearly Buffalo didn't want to get stuck down the road.

As we all know, cap space is a luxury these days in the flat cap world and some teams will be looking to shed cap and pay to do it. I think Adams is smart keeping his cap space available to further benefit his team. Now to see if he can do something with it or not.

Unless Buffalo decided they wanted Krebs, and were going to take whatever package they could get that included Krebs, it is simply unforgivable for Calgary to not beat this package and allow another star player to go to a division rival. Time for Treliving to go.

Just added up their potential lineup fully healthy:
    F - 55.185m
    D - 23.266m
    G - 7.325
    Total = $85.776m

    Add Nolan Patrick - 1.2m
    Add Ben Hutton - 0.750m
    Add Dylan Coghlan - 0.7625m
    2.7125m in the press box.

So they are anywhere between 85.776m and 88.4885m potential cap. I guess either Dadonov (helps next yr) or Smith (UFA this offseason) will be moved, plus maybe Hague sent down (I don't know if he can or can't) to get under the cap. Or a Forward like Howden, Roy, Janmark, Carrier could be the odd men out.
