This one was tough!! I was loving garland but if you look at my roster my D is a mess whereas I have a plethora of great rebuilding wing options. I'm still two years out of contention as well. We have a steal round where I got garland basically for free and traded him back to his original owner for lundqvist- straight up. I think it's an overpay now but I love the high shooting upside in nils.

    Tater tots?

    Ummmm...wat?

I wouldn't call that bad, a bit of an undersell perhaps. My perspective is, you need to get maximum value if you're rebuilding and don't have a ton of assets to leverage. That often requires patience and if you don't have patience you'll find that you become a target for other GM's looking to extract value.

Clearly you are rebuilding and still have some work to do. In particular your D and to a lesser degree your Goaltending is hurting pretty bad. Adding Nils to your prospects was a solid move. You paid a fair price but got a key piece to your rebuild. Clarke and Lundqvist should be a good D core to build around and Cossa and most certainly Swayman is a good start in net.

Why do people do massive rebuilds in limited keepers?
I would recommend against this type of rebuild.
A keep 11, the amount you trade you could compete in two years

In a 16-team or larger dynasty league - then I can see an argument for.

i've seen last place teams reset and win a title in keep 10's, keep 12's the next season.

Because they like drafting and getting shiny new toys more than they like winning.

Absolutely! Thing is, it seems to me an alarming number of poolies have a strong aversion to any player that's over 29 years of age and, as Random-d says, an obsession with the latest greatest prospects. Once you go down that road too far and won't change direction, well you are indeed in a perpetual rebuild. A lot of us around here repeatedly warn against this, for years now we've cautioned against this, yet we have GM's this summer dropping Crosby, or Wheeler etc, to protect Cole Caulfield. They'll leave a legit 60 pt forward or a 40 pt D on the table to draft a 6th overall prospect. The farms sure look nice on paper but the trophy case is empty!

I mean not barring to do or not to do rebuild talk, Garland signed a nice five year deal and has been the Canucks consistently best forward this season, imo (watched every game). I'd want a player like him if I want to compete in two years. I personally wouldn't trade him for Lundkvist straight up. He's only 25 and could put up 60-70 points this year. If he gets given a chance on pp1 and runs with it? Potential PPG player. Lundkvist is a nice piece but I would have wanted the other person to add a high pick or another top prospect. In this instance it's nice you got Garland for free, but that doesn't diminish his value, at all. Maybe I don't understand the numbers behind (G and D heavy league) though and am undervaluing Lundkvist here. Anyways, the deals done and you needed D. As someone else said, Clarke is an amazing D prospect to have moving forward, imo, and adding Lundkvist's potential is nice.

Also, anytime I'm sending another team a player which will help them compete, and I'm not competing... I'm making sure they pay up

They do them because the keeper amount fluctuates and the top three teams 6 keepers look like borderline cheating.

Tldr answer? Its literally the only way you'll compete. I like co peting in games im playing

100% unless you're in a super deep / dynasty league you should be able to compete each year. There's far too many people who like to roleplay GM and think a rebuild is a necessity when you can build a quality team each year through the draft and being active on the fa/waivers.

We had a guy in one cap league who was in a constant "rebuild" because he always drafted young players

Well its an 18 team dynasty so I think mi e qualifies lol! I competed and even won i year one but it was always farcical. Even when I won I got stupidly lucky and won my last match 202 to 201.25- thats not hyperbole either. In a 200ish fantasy point week I won by 3/4 of a point lol!

Like I said- the top 3-4 tes have a young core of superstars and I decided that if I wanted to be truly competitive rather than an also ran I needed to do a full rebuild. I've been at this a long time and generally prefer to compete but you evaluate every situation differently and in thi format I realized a high end core is necessary to be a real threat and to do it properly it will take longer than a year to turn things around. Honestly I think most of the real work will be done by the time I add one of the big three next year to wright Hughes Hughes clarke and even cossa but it will take longer for that talent to marinate.

I've played in limited keepers where you just need to do a couple of 2 for 1s or 3 for 2s over the course of half a failed season- grab a blue chipper or two with a fast turnaround and bam! You're in the race again.

That was not the case in this league. I'm pretty stoked with my plan so far and it will be such a gratifying experience to be a true contender in a very skilled/knowledgable/and competitive league. I can wait for that and believe the wait will be worth it. Patience is a virtue...
