Default A New Concept: Balanced Hockey League

    Just something I thought of...

On a surface, it's just a points-based H2H Fantrax league. For each game period, you field four forward lines (LW + C +RW), three defensive pairings (D + D) and one goaltender (G). And players earn the following points:

    1 per Goal
    0.7 per Assist
    1.7 per Power-Play Point (PPP)
0.15 per Shot on Goal (SOG)
    0.4 per Hit
    0.4 per Block
    0.3 per Penalty Minute (PIM)
    0.2 per Save
    -1 per Goal Against
    2 per Win
    2 per SO

    But there is a caveat.

No skaters earn all the points.

The first forward line (the top scoring line) only earns points for Goals, Assists and PPP.
The second forward line (the second scoring line) only earns points for Goals, Assists and SOG.
The third forward line (the checkers) only earns points for Hits and Blocks.
The fourth forward line (the tough guys) only earns points for Hits and PIM.

The first defensive pairing (the offensive D-men) only earns points for Goals, Assists, PPP and SOG.
The second defensive pairing (the two-way D-men) only earns points for Goals, Assists and Blocks.
The third defensive pairing (the defensive D-men) only earns points for Blocks and PIM.

Which means your roster needs to be balanced. You can't just have a bunch of scorers. Or a bunch of checkers and tough guys.

So yes, before each game, you need to decide what player will fill what roster spot. Yes, some players will be more universal than others (for example, I can see Brady Tkachuk fit well on every line. But not, say, Connor McDavid).

Oh, and "game periods" are not weeks. A game period is a sequence of days (normally 2-3) that encompasses at least 16 real NHL games. That way, you'll have less holes in your lineup. (And no, you can't use your player more than once during a game period. If the game period lasts from Monday to Wednesday, and your player's real team plays on Monday and Tuesday, only the Monday's game stats will be counted).

The total roster will contain 30 players, and you can still sign up to 3 free agents per week in order to plug possible lineup holes.

So hopefully this will make the league more realistic. And require a lot of attention, so it's definitely not for casual fantasy players.

If enough people are interested, we can try the concept out. If not, it will stay a theory...

    A+ for effort.

It's not really my cup of tea, since I hate the idea of 3rd liners not being rewarded for output. Or the idea that you have to decide what line you want Tom Wilson to be on.

And just a counter point: most multicat leagues already provide value to stuff other than scoring. So there is already a mechanism to prevent teams from just loading up on scoring.

Lastly, if your big thing really is not just wanting to see teams focusing on scoring, you could do roto ?

Again, A+ for effort. Always interesting to see people think outside the box...
