Why are so many high on Markstrom?

Another sub-par game from Markstrom. Gives up a very weak goal and his team finds a way to lose in OT.
I try to be patient with my players but he screwed up my team last year with his crappy SV% and it feels like this year is gonna be another one of those bad ones.

Meanwhile Vanecek has been riding on my bench and putting up much better numbers. I'll re-evaluate after 10 games but man am I getting fed up with Calgary and Markstrom.

Yeah this one hurts. I crashed with the Flames up 2-1 in the 3rd and Markstrom holding the fort saving 22 of 23 or something, woke up and cringed at the end result. Let’s see though, still only two games in, and unlike other teams Calgary ain’t looking to plan b between the pipes.

Our expectations were low but holy f***. I too had him in both of my leagues last season. Along Tristan Jarry...shockingly managed 2nd place in one of those.

I take some solace in the fact I got him relatively late in my drafts this year and I prepared with backup options in case he doesn't find his game.

If I didn't already have Markstrom on my keeper team, I don't think I would have drafted him unless he fell and was like 20th goalie available then I would have considered him. This is one of those situations where I really hope I'm wrong but I don't know how I can summon any optimism. The Flames are a mediocre team at best and Markstrom is a mediocre goalie who had one great year in his career. The best that can be said about him is that his #1 role is firmly entrenched and he's gonna get a ton of starts.

Gents, patience, it's only 2 games in! Wait until the 10-15 games mark to see how things shake out with Markstrom.

And same with other goalies - look at Ullmark, Bs fans coming out with pitchforks after 2 freakin PRE-SEASON games, and meanwhile everyone anointing 22yo Swayman as the next coming of Rask after 10 games last year and 1 game this year. So what happens, Swayman puts up a stinker tonight, and Ullmark gets to face his former team Friday and start to quell any doubts about his play and show the vet that he is.

People get crazy when it comes to goalies, I know I do it, most frustrating position in fantasy by far.

There’s a reason why Markstrom is top choice for Sweden in the Olympics. The guy is a proven and very good, albeit not elite, starting goalie.

he is somewhere between top 10 and top 15 goalie in the league....he does not have best defensive system in front of him but its also not the worst...he is very serviceable when it comes to percentage stats and very serviceable when it come s to volume stats. He is good to very good own but not elite. He has been that for about 4 years now but last year was very tough..it was an exception tho, not the rule.

Yes exactly what I said, good to very good, not elite. The point is this whole thread was about “why are so many high on Markstrom”, suggesting he’s overrated. He’s not. Yes the Calgary D is a bit of a ?, but what kind of D did he have 2 years ago in Vancouver when he almost won the Vezina? This guys proven he can withstand a shaky D, and put up reasonably good numbers notwithstanding that.

Was at MSG last night, so front row seat to witness Markstrom putting up a really solid effort against the Rangers. Flames overall were really solid, both defensively and on the counter-attack, and on occasions (there were a few) where they made bonehead moves in the d zone leading to high danger chances, Markstrom stood tall.

I like how the Flames looked, obviously Sutter brand of hockey but they weren't really sitting back either - they had an attacking mindset from the neutral zone into the offensive zone. I was impressed.

And for all those critiquing their offseason signing of Gudbransson, I thought he looked pretty good.

BTW Gaudreau looked dynamic, and Lindholm is just a terrific player all-around. The real heartbeat of that team (yes even beyond Tkachuk).
