    Default Roto strategy

I jumped into a roto league this year for the first time in years.

We start 4 at each forward position, 6 Dmen and 2 goalies with a farm the we can swap in and out on a daily basis. The max GP is 328 at each forward position, 492 for Dmen and 82 for goalies.

It's been a while since I've had to deal with GP limits so what is a good strategy to employ here? Open to any and all suggestions.

    Thanks

Sounds like you're in a Dobber tiered league. I love the strategy of loading up on goalies early and then finding what to attack later on in the season. It's VERY easy to go over on your player games. It's pretty hard to max out on your goalie games.

Thanks, took over the team in the off season after it finished in the bottom half and has some good pieces for the future, Aho, Petterson, Marner but max 82 GP for goalies doesn't seem like too much.

No Dobber league this time, it's been a couple of years since I was in one of those. This team I just took over, it finished in the bottom half last year.

Well how many goalies play 50 games? If you have 2 of those you still have 50 games to fill in.

    50 + 50 = 100 100 > 82.

Sounds like you understand 'strategy' for roto (e.g. balance across all cats) but you're asking about strategy in relation to max gps.

In that case, one mistake I often see with teams that can stream from their farm is that they over-play their roster too early. Game 1 is as valuable as Game 82 for each slot... so don't feel pressure to 'fill' that roster spot for a game if you don't like the matchup.

This is the opposite of classic H2H with streaming as more volume typically equates to more points. In roto, you want bang for your per game buck.

Not sure based on your posts but if it's 82 gp max for BOTH goalie slots (so 41gp PER slot) - then yeah, it shouldn't be too tough to hit those marks as long as it's not a 16-team league. If it's 82gp PER goalie slot (164gp total) - then you have to prioritize them much more. (How much would depend on how many teams in your league).

Reminder too that most platforms (Yahoo, Fantrax) let you sneak in a few 'extra' gps at each slot if you go into a day with 1gp left but 4 guys playing that night. Do your best to be "on pace" for your GPs by the final month so that you can take advantage of a busy Saturday night and get those extra gps.

    Good luck!

50 + 50 = 100 < 164 (82 games per position x 2 goalies). That's how Yahoo works. There is no way to set a separate GP limit by position. Perhaps the OP's league is not on Yahoo. Maybe Clutch can clarify...

"The max GP is 328 at each forward position, 492 for Dmen and 82 for goalies"
    "
but max 82 GP for goalies doesn't seem like too much."
Ya just OP specifically said 82 GP max for goalies.

If 82 GP is the max for goalies...
This is going to devalue high volume high rate goalies Vasilevskiy. Part of his value is his good rates coupled with high volume and wins. But 82 games is not too hard to reach. Tandem will do it. Can reach near identical numbers with goalies found later on in the draft.
I would not be drafting a goalie in the first round.

It's total per, so 328 for C, LW and RW, 429 for Dmen and only 82 for goalies so I guess we have to be really selective.

My goalies at the moment are Hart, Andersen, Blackwood and both WSH goalies.

In that case, you are going to want to be very selective with starts in net. Avoid high powered opponents. I'd argue that you have too many goalies. You don't need 5, I'd aim for 3 at most.

If you count FOW from all positions, that's a huge bonus to wingers who get FOW. If it's centers only, avoid guys who don't get FOW. It also helps to have positional flexibility. multi-position guys will be easier to plug and play for good matchups.
