Sources says it will be a max eight-year extension for Nick Suzuki in Montreal. To be announced later today.

Working on exact terms, but hearing Montreal and Nick Suzuki are closing in on a long-term extension. Good way to start the season.

This should have been doable under 7 million but I'm pretty confident he'll live up to the contract

Actually, I believe he will easily outplay that contract.
It will look like a steal sooner rather than later.
Points-only keeper league. 12 teams. Keep any 12 players. Dress 12F - 6D - 2G.
This puts him ahead of Barzal, EP40, and Hischier for recently signed young, up and coming centers. I'd have a hard time seeing Suzuki ahead of any of those other kids for their overall games. Only Hischier is locked up long term from that group FWIW.
Good for Suzuki and good for MTL locking him up long term, but man, that's a big number.

If he continues to grow...its a solid deal. If he regresses it's a mess.
He could end up like Keller and Hischier who are not performing to their deals. But it's still early in them so they can turn it around (Not saying Nico is bad or anything. The team is garbo around him)
Suzuki came out way ahead in this I think. And Bergevin doesn't care if Suzuki fails long term because if Suzuki does, Bergevin won't be cleaning up the mess. Suzuki gets almost 8mill for 8yrs, no headaches of signing a deal constantly, and he gets to go to market at 30yrs old.

As you noticed, Barzal and Pettersson have short-term deals and will go to bank afterwards.
The Habs buy several free agent years with Suzuki so the comparable doesn't really apply here.
Hischier's contract is similar (AAV a little lower) and I believe Suzuki's overall game is already very polished and he oozes leadership as his playoff resume can attest.
The upside might not be the same fantasy-wise, but I don't see EP40 doing much penalty killing or sliding in front of a slapshot for instance.
Obviously there's always a risk with an 8-year contract, but I have no problem with that extension.

Lets not forget that Montreal struggles to sign big name free agents and the last thing they can afford to do is lose another center. This signing was huge for Bergevin and the Habs.

Holy cow that's a big number.
I find both Suzuki and Hischier to be very similar players so far early into their careers. Both are averaging right around 64pts for their careers. Both are under 50% FOW (Hischier is the better of the two early in their careers by a few percentage points), both play a similar amount of PPTOI and SHTOI/game. Both are 2nd line quality players in my opinion. Suzuki is 1C simply based on Montreal's situation where as Hischier is 2C behind JHuhges. Both are locked up long term, hoping their game goes to another level. Time will tell if the gamble pays off for both franchises.

The deal is simple. The team is gambling he'll continue to grow. Suzuki knows 63mill over 8yrs is a lot of money.
Different positions, but Svech also signed a similar deal. 8yr 62mill deal in August. Svech signed it though while an RFA, not like Suzuki with 1yr left on his ELC.

Absolutely terrific deal. This guy is a legit no 1 C and SELFLESS LEADER. Buys up 4 UFA years, contract will be a terrific bargain at that point.

Great deal for Suzuki.
