Default Re: Dobber EXPERT Stanley 2021-22

My plan has not deviated much in the last few years. Try to get good early points, shots and PPP points from forwards. Get solid D with PPP and good combined shots and hits totals. Don’t lose track of shots and hits, be disciplined about who I take to avoid accidentally punting a category. Use my bench to piecemeal together goalie starts. This year, I wanted to also pay attention to +/- as much as possible.

At the end of the draft, I have no idea if I have done those things. I have applied no arithmetic. I think my hits might suck. I think my +/- might be OK. Some drafts, I feel confident that I have nailed it but not this one.

    Yellow Dogs

    1. (2) Nathan MacKinnon (Col - C) When I started looking into it, I didn’t love this spot. I could make a case for Draisaitl, Kucherov, Matthews or MacKinnon but I settled on the shots. That would let me take a shot light player at the 2/3 turn if one that I liked was there. Last year, MacKinnon was the consensus first overall pick. He has line mates, a deadly power play and a strong team equaling a strong +/-. Weirdly, the day before this draft, I had the number one pick in a FOW league and I took Draisaitl instead of McDavid.

    2. (23) Sidney Crosby(Pit - C) Much to the dismay of some, I have picked first or second four times in this league. And so, the 2/3 turn coming around has become familiar. I don’t make any solid plans as there is always someone sitting here that I wouldn’t expect. Not always two someones, though. I was hoping for a couple of reasonable chances at 90 points and I figured Crosby would be one. Wrist injury? I don’t know, which is why he was here.

    3. (26) Dougie Hamilton (NJ - D) No second forward that I really wanted more than Hamilton. There are about 20 D that I want and we draft 72. If you want more than your fair share, you have to start early and often. I really felt that this year the D were not going to last and Hamilton was the one I wanted the most. At least two analytical sources seem to think that Jersey is going to be better than most believe and, given my three drafted Devils, I hope they are right. More shots, good hits and he’s going to get all the minutes and chances.

    4. (47) Aaron Ekblad (Fla - D) I don’t think that I have ever drafted, or have ever wanted to draft, Ekblad. But, he was in the list and he showed up earlier in Yahoo than many others. Also, he is now the PP man in Florida and Florida is a monster this year. He historically shoots and hits, although the hits have declined, and he will reap the benefits of his environment: points, PPP and +/-.

    5. (50) Kris Letang (Pit - D) I draft Letang everywhere I can, every year. He just fills up all of the categories and, sometimes, he doesn’t get hurt.

    6. (71) Charlie McAvoy (Bos - D) I thought, because of his default ranking on Yahoo, that McAvoy would be long gone and I would be drafting someone else but Chychrun, Petry, Jones and Pionk were all gone, which is fine. I targeted McAvoy in that same FOW league because it is also a hits, blocks and PIMs league. He looks like to get 150 shots, 100+ hits, good +/- if Boston doesn’t fall off a cliff and is looking like the PP guy on a stupid good PP.

    7. (74) Drew Doughty (LA - D) I thought, “One more D, so I am not looking for two later on.” Doughty is the D I am looking to draft six of, brutal +/- aside. 300 combined shots and hits. 40+ points and 20+ PP points. Hopefully, the additions of Danault and Arvidsson help reduce the deficit.

    8. (95) Ryan O'Reilly (StL - C) See Ekblad regarding never wanting to own a player but, in this draft especially but also in my others this year, I have become more agnostic about whom I draft. I knew I was hurting for forwards with decent points totals. O’Reilly is a 75 point pace player over the last three years with a solid +/-. Decent enough shots. First PP. No hits. Yahoo has him as the 30th ranked player in this league last year. Perfectly happy to have him.

    9. (98) Vladimir Tarasenko (StL - RW) I own Tarasenko in every redraft I am in this year. He was a 2/3 turn guy and then he hurt his shoulder. In this league, especially, his lack of PIMs doesn’t hurt and he has always been an 80-90 hit guy. I also own a pair of Hall shares which I could not manage here.

    10. (119) Jack Hughes (NJ - C,LW) And the hits just don’t keep coming. People all say nice things about him. His micro stats are really pretty. I need a break out guy and a LW.

    11. (122) Ryan Strome (NYR - C,RW) All the players were starting to look the same to me. Strome has a 70 point pace playing in NY with Panarin. He’s not great shooter but he’s not tragic. He has hit in the past but not so much now. Still first PP. Really it was “Strome=70 points” that sparked this pick.

    12. (143) MacKenzie Blackwood (NJ - G) I eyeballed the goalie situation for the first time. Woof. Someone had even moved Mike Smith up and he’s been available late everywhere so far. I don’t want sure things. I just want a bunch of late goalies who I can piecemeal a season out of. Again, some have optimism about NJ. I have drafted a couple of Berniers and I thought, “Maybe I’ll get both” (I didn’t). There is a rumour he might get his vaccine after all.

    13. (146) Jake Allen (Mon - G) The goalies were really rough and I thought I needed to get started on my motley crew. As well, the skaters still all looked the same, or enough of them looked the same, that I thought I could wait. Carey Price??? In roto, the first week starts count the same as the last.

Default Re: Dobber EXPERT Stanley 2021-22

Pretty rusty and not getting home sooner had me scrambling to login seconds before first pick.

    1. (8) Cale Makar (Col - D) - Missed out on the elite forwards. Let's see if I can get the McDavid of Defense.
    2. (17) Mitchell Marner (Tor - RW) - Needed a forward since I went D first. Had Marner and Barkov here - choose Marner.
    3. (32) Steven Stamkos (TB - C,RW) - Was really hoping Hedman was still going to be available but got snagged pick before. So went with his teammate Stammer.
    4. (41) Patrice Bergeron (Bos - C) - Yucky round here and wasn't really sure what to do. Usually when that happens I just default to picking a Centre. I probably should have just went Theodore.
    5. (56) Semyon Varlamov (NYI - G) - Now I'm thinking goalies. Saros went earlier than planned so Ill take Varly.
    6. (65) Alex Pietrangelo (VGK - D) - Oh well got a Vegas D anyway.
    7. (80) Vincent Trocheck (Car - C) - This is the spot for him.
    8. (89) Philipp Grubauer (Sea - G) - Think Seattle will be good defensively, and looked good in preseason.
    9. (104) Mikhail Sergachev (TB - D) - Maybe a little early.
    10. (113) Evgeny Kuznetsov (Was - C) Was waiting for someone to pick and it was my turn... autopick Could return to form.
    11. (128) Tony DeAngelo (Car - D) - If being a piece of shit can convert to point output, I got this in the bag.
    12. (137) Andre Burakovsky (Col - LW,RW) - Desperately needing a LW.
    13. (152) Devon Toews (Col - D) - Lost again Bad pick. Idk what I should have done here (Dunn at the very least), sigh.
    14. (161) Tomas Hertl (SJ - C,LW) - Needing goals and LW - taking the risk.
    15. (176) Pavel Francouz (Col - G) - Banking on Kuemper injury.
    16. (185) Nazem Kadri (Col - C) - Solid 4the C
    17. (200) John Gibson (Anh - G) - Well had Wahlstrom qued up for a round of picks just to have him taken the pick before. How rude. So I decided to pass on the rudeness and lock up my 3rd volume goalie incase of no Kuemper injury.
    18. (209) Erik Cernak (TB - D) - Needed hits and this guy does that. Idk probably picked too early.
    19. (224) Jakub Voracek (Cls - LW,RW) Hoping the new scenery can help him out. Looking good so far.
    20. (233) Nick Ritchie (Tor - LW) - Hits
    21. (248) Marcus Foligno (Min - LW,RW) - Hits
    22. (257) Dustin Brown (LA - RW) - Hits some pts
    23. (272) Jordan Eberle (Sea - RW)
    24. (281) Evgenii Dadonov (VGK - LW,RW) - Was wanting Craig Smith here but snagged by EB.
    25. (296) Casey Mittelstadt (Buf - C,RW) - With Eichel out someone has to do something in Buffalo. I think my +/- is way high so can take the hit if this guy pans out.

Started well... I should of did a run through before hand. Largest deepest league I do and 'got lost' a few times. The Kuznetsov autodraft set me back.
    Goalies went well.
Forgetting that hockey games have wingers, is going to hurt me.
Not even top team on my projections lol...

    Prediction: 8th
    Things to help:
A long Kuemper injury - allow me to trade goalie for a winger.
Kuzzy to find some good coco that blasts him back into form.
    Gibson trade to strong team.
Mittelstadt to shine in larger role.

More thoughts. I went heavy on the top teams (especially COL!). My goalies are all COL related.

    Yellow Dogs continued

    14. (167) Josh Norris (Ott - C)
I had three really early centres and I was waiting for Ek, Larkin or Norris. Temek took Ek in the 12
th and Larkin in 13 and so I took Norris here. Number one guy who also hits some. I have some reasons (see Murray below) to want Ottawa’s goal differential to be good this year, so I am crossing my fingers about the +/-.

    15. (170) Jake Muzzin (Tor - D) I had just thought, “I’ll take Trouba with the shots and hits and number 2 PP time next” when ’68 took Trouba. So, Muzzin, to finish off my D. He might be better than Trouba in the end. He’s paced for 38 points, a plus 24, 150 shots and 168 hits over the last three years with no PP contribution to speak of. Need some hits.

    16. (191) Laurent Brossoit (VGK - G) I planned to take him everywhere this year and only got him here. His starts should be good ones.

    17. (194) Viktor Arvidsson (LA - LW,RW) I honestly thought I owned him in every league but it’s just two. Which is good, because I am not sure how it is going so far. Still, there is a chance that he gets me a bunch of points, PP points and shots. I am not keeping up with my hits totals though.

    18. (215) Kaapo Kahkonen (Min - G) Minnesota is good for goalies. Cam Talbot?? I don’t know.

    19. (218) Chris Driedger (Sea - G) Was almost the guy. Was good last year. Seattle might have a good defensive environment.

    20. (239) Matt Murray (Ott - G) Adding some bulk to my goalie lottery ticket pool.

    21. (242) Brian Elliott (TB - G) After two Cup runs, maybe TB will rest Vasilevskiy some.

    22. (263) Nino Niederreiter (Car - LW,RW) Had a good year last year. Some decent shots and hits.

    23. (266) Andrew Copp(Wpg - LW,RW) Was good last year, he is seeing second line/second PP deployment with exposure (there is something about that term that really irritates me) to Ehlers. Throws some hits.

    24. (287) Boone Jenner (Cls - C,LW) He has often paced for good shots and hits totals. So far, he is net front on PP 1.

    25. (290) Lucas Raymond (Det - LW) A total lottery ticket, which I don’t usually chance. Based upon pre-season games, he might hit less than a Hughes brother but maybe there is something here with Larkin and Bertuzzi. And if I have to look for hits or PP points on waivers, I’ll take hits.

Default Re: Dobber EXPERT Stanley 2021-22

When the draft finished at 10pm, my wife asked me a usual question... "How'd it go?"
    "Not great", I said.
"Oh - sorry, why?", she said.
    "I just... didn't enjoy it."
"That's not good to hear - you love fantasy hockey. It's nice to see you passionate about something", she said.
    "...."

When we have dinners with my two daughters, there's a lot of times where we really have to push them into trying their foods.
"Can you girls please try this? Just a bite?", we say.
"I don't like this", they say.
"You don't know until you try", we say.
"I know I don't like this", they say.
And they try a bite. And they hate it.
And... as a parent, we think... jeez, I don't think they gave that an honest try.
But I think people know when something isn't going to go well for them.

I walked into the draft disappointed.
It's my fourth year in the Experts division.
    My draft positions... 9th, 7th, 9th, 9th.
During the draft I kept thinking about that...
"What's the odds of this?" - I think to myself in between picks.
    Four drafts, all back half.
    I know the odds. I'm good with numbers. (6/12*6/12*6/12*6/12 = (1/2)^4.
The odds are 1 in 16 that somebody will have four consecutive 2nd half of draft picks.
Don't worry about it... you like fantasy hockey... draft your players, stop feeling shitty about this...
Just chat - it'll make you feel better...

It should be better, though... could be/should be.
That's the way the last two years of COVID have been for me.
Shit - I posted about this the other day in the Carey Price thread.
I feel like everybody else is getting through this better than me.
I mean... I could have a top three pick... four drafts, I should've had ONE top three pick by now, yes...
(Maybe... the odds of not having a top three pick are 9/12*9/12*9/12*9/12... 31%... OK, that's just 1in3... one in three people will have four straight drafts without a top three pick)
(Right - I know... but I'm not just 31%, I'm four straight back-halfs... that one is 6%... I realize... but that's fine... somebody's gotta be in the 1in16. Just odds)
(Shake it off Peng... just draft... you like fantasy hockey... just draft)

Drafting... (mood declining)... it's a hard draft - not just the position, but among the elite competition.
More calculating... what are the actual odds of having a top three pick: 3/12, yes... 25%.
Two straight top 3 picks: 3/12*3/12 = 6%... opposite of four straight back-half.
Three straight top 3 picks:... 1.5%
Four straight top 3 picks:... 0.4%
Five straight top 3 picks:... 0.1%
(Let it go, Peng... you like this... this is fun for you...)

And I think about Carey Price... he puts on a performance, he's good at his job... but something broke him, something went wrong along the way... and he needs some time off.
And I think about Bo Burnham... whose special I've watched 10+ times now... and I think about how long he stepped away for... something broke him... it's the parts in between the songs I keep watching.
And I think... thank god some people actually say it out loud these days when they feel like shit.
    And they took a break.
And I think... now that I got through the key dates in my fantasy hockey drafts...
    I need a break.

Good luck to everybody with their seasons.

Default Re: Dobber EXPERT Stanley 2021-22

I was slotted at pick #11 which I think is the worst slot you can get, at least at pick #12 you can safely pick goalie platoons. Goalie plan was to go little more safety than in the RHRS draft and pick up one starter in R1-R5 and then see if I can get value picks at any point. If I couldn't get any, I'd load up on the likes of Nedeljkovic, Merzlikins, Allen and few others and hope some of them put up decent results. With weekly adds you can't afford to fall behind in skater pace so going with like 7-9 G as in RHRS isn't really an option. As far as skaters go, I always find that dmen are nearly always highest rated skaters left on my board at pretty much any point after very early rounds and centers usually non-existent. So I would prefer C if rankings were close and also to not draft more than 3D in first 10 rounds.

    Last Resort

C - Barzal, Couturier, Eriksson Ek, Larkin
LW - Bennett, Robertson, Mantha, Jaskin
RW - Rantanen, Nylander, Atkinson, Tatar
D - Josi, Barrie, Rielly, Dahlin, Seider, Borowiecki
G - Hellebuyck, Saros, Nedeljkovic, Raanta
    BN - Eichel, Bishop, Rakell

    1. (11) Mikko Rantanen (Col - RW)

I did look at Ovechkin and Panarin too, but decided to go with Rantanen. Goalie was also an option, but I was fine with getting one of Hellebuyck/Kuemper with my next pick so decided to for skater first.

    2. (14) Connor Hellebuyck (Wpg - G)

I did think about skipping goalie here, but decided to go for more G heavy strategy and pick up Hellebuyck here.

    3. (35) Juuse Saros (Nsh - G)

I wasn't really planning to go for 2G so early, but my pre-draft plan targets in Fox, B.Tkachuk, Stamkos, DeBrincat went so I was left with Josi, Saros and M.Tkachuk as options. LOTR had 2 wingers already so I thought I could slide M.Tkachuk to my 2nd pick, but that didn't happen. I had Saros as late 2nd round value so I'll pick value when I see it even if I didn't particularly want to go for 2G this early. WPG and NSH aren't exactly top teams though so I'll have to pickup some later goalies from top teams to compensate for mediocre W totals.

    4. (38) Roman Josi (Nsh - D)

LOTR picked up M.Tkachuk so went with best available skater on my board with Josi.

    5. (59) Tyson Barrie (Edm - D)
    6. (62) Morgan Rielly (Tor - D)

I would have preferred to get at least one forward here, but there wasn't anyone available I liked here so picked up 2 best D on my list. Many of my picks are really light on hits so I'd have to compensate for that later on. If I didn't have 2G already, I would have taken Binnington here.

    7. (83) Mathew Barzal (NYI - C)
    8. (86) Sam Bennett (Fla - C,LW)

I wanted Trocheck, but he went afew picks earlier so and I felt I needed C here so went with the top C available on my list in Barzal even though I had few wingers ranked ahead of him. There were some solid late C picks available in the draft with likes of Couture, Hischier and few others lasting pretty long. So in hindsight I'd probably have gone with Fiala. LOTR picked up Fiala up so that left me with Robertson/Bennett/Hyman. My team was very light on hits so opted for Bennett.

    9. (107) Jason Robertson (Dal - LW)
    10. (110) Sean Couturier (Phi - C)

Campbell kept dropping little later than I thought so would have picked him up here if he was available, but he went 1 pick earlier. I would also have gone with Hyman over Robertson, but he also went so that left me with Robertson. For the 2nd pick I did consider DeAngelo and maybe Burns, but I already had 3D so opted to go for a forward instead. I was looking between Rust, Couturier and Perron and opted to go for C in Couturier since rankings were close.

    11. (131) William Nylander (Tor - LW,RW)
    12. (134) Joel Eriksson Ek (Min - C)

I did consider going D with Dahlin/D.Toews, but opted for 2 forwards instead. I am really liking JEE's situation in MIN as it looks like he'll be getting 1C+PP1 role so very happy to get him here. I did consider Larkin and Boeser for the 2nd pick, but I wanted to boost goals little bit and felt Nylander was safer option than Boeser. If I didn't have 2G already, I'd probably have picked up Merzlikins here.

    13. (155) Dylan Larkin (Det - C)
    14. (158) Rasmus Dahlin (Buf - D)

I took a look into the G situation, but Francouz, Nedeljkovic, Bernier and Raanta were all still on the board so decided to wait little longer. So went with 2 best skaters on my board. My team is quite low on hits so I really need to get some hits from last 2D and at least 1 winger.

    15. (179) Anthony Mantha (Was - LW,RW)
    16. (182) Alex Nedeljkovic (Det - G)

Francouz went so wanted to pick up my 3G here and chose Nedeljkovic, would have gone for Franzouz instead if he was available. I need W from my bench goalies though so I need someone like Raanta for 4G. I did consider Gallagher too, but I preferred Mantha slightly.

    17. (203) Antti Raanta (Car - G)
    18. (206) Tomas Tatar (NJ - LW,RW)

Raanta is still there so time to pick him up. E.Karlsson is the best skater available on my list, but I really need hits from my last 2D so decided to skip him. Tatar should provide some hits and should be in good situation to produce in New Jersey.

    19. (227) Jack Eichel (Buf - C)
    20. (230) Cam Atkinson (Phi - RW)

I wasn't really planning to pick up Eichel, but I had him ranked in around 150 with 30 GP projection so thought it was worth doing at this point of the draft. It's R20 after all and it's pretty much bench rounds already so why not. I did also think about E.Kane, but didn't want to fill too many of my IR spots as I'd probably pick up Bishop later in the draft. My C was full and I could wait for hits D so kept filling out my wingers with best available players.

    21. (251) Dmitrij Jaskin (Ari - LW,RW)
    22. (254) Moritz Seider (Det - D)
    23. (275) Ben Bishop (Dal - G)
    24. (278) Rickard Rakell (Anh - LW,RW)
    25. (299) Mark Borowiecki (Nsh - D)

Late rounds so some upside shots in Jaskin and Seider, depth fillers with Rakell and Borowiecki and then G gamble with Bishop. All of these players might be out of my roster by the quartermark of the season, but hopefully I get at least 1 decent hit here.

Overall looks like fairly balanced lineup, but might end up light on G,HIT and W. Going goalie heavy in the early rounds also clearly weakens my skaters quite a bit, but I hope I managed to make up some of the ground with good drafting.

Default Re: Dobber EXPERT Stanley 2021-22

Sorry to hear that things are wearing on you and that the draft wasn't as enjoyable Peng. It'll be nice to sit back and just watch now.

On my end, I've also ended up in the back half in my three years in the Experts League, drafting 7, 8, and now 10 (so at most there was only one draft slot separating me and P7 the last three drafts - and he doesn't make it easy).

I was expecting this draft to be messier with being the cheese on the sandwich of P7, me, Temek, and LOTR. In fact, I found things went pretty well, and my guys that I would be watching for almost always fell to me. The realistic options anyways, can't expect McDavid, Matthews, and Vas to all fall.

Went into the draft with a top 15 or so ranked, but I was solidly debating between 9-15 the entire time and would flip them in my mind on a daily basis. Between Ovie, Tkachuk, Rantanen, Hubs, Panarin, etc there were just too many options for that spot. Luckily my 7th ranked Marchand dropped to me, so that made my choice a little easier. I felt bad leaving Tkachuk off the board, but with knowing that this was going to be a tough draft for me having to give the baby a bath during the middle rounds, I played it a little safer in the opening rounds.

Aside from that, I have found goalies and defencemen decently deep this year, so I said I'll see how the runs go but I won't rush anything. Figured I would likely end up with a bunch of forwards early, and that is exactly how it went.

    Round 1 - Brad Marchand
As mentioned above, could have gone any number of ways, but the scoring is there and the peripherals are all solid. Safest pick on the board after #6 IMO.

    Round 2 - Jonathan Huberdeau
I think Florida is going to absolutely go off offensively this year (and I don't think I'm alone in that) so I wanted to get a share. 100 point potential in round 2 plus a hit per game is impossible to pass on despite giving me 2 LWs.

    Round 3 - Jake Guentzel
Debated a few different options here, but with Guentzel and Crosby nearly back, I loved the idea of adding another 85-point guy with lots of PPPs, shots, and hits. I've also found LW a lot deeper than RW this year, so I wanted to get at least one RW early.

    Round 4 - Max Pacioretty
I'm a sucker for the guys that can put up points with peripherals. What can I say. I'm not sure I would trade my first four picks for anyone else's at this point, even to get McDavid.

    Round 5 - Neal Pionk
Peripherals through the roof here, and hopefully a boatload of PPPs too. I think he finishes as a top-10 fantasy Dman this year. Couldn't risk letting him go even five more picks to my next one. There were a couple forwards I debated, but I knew one would fall to me.

    Round 6 - John Tavares
I don't see him putting up more than 75 points this year, but even a safe 70 with a good plus-minus, lots of shots, and a terrific +/- is something I'm happy with here in my first C of the draft. Still seeing enough goalies on the board that I'm happy waiting too.

This is where I started doing the baby bath, so I really wasn't looking far down my list.

    Round 7 - Taylor Hall
Dmen are still flying, but I couldn't pass on the upside of Hall anymore. Having two pieces of that top Boston PP is juicy, and I thought the defenceman I wanted would slide to my next pick.

    Round 8 - Ryan Pulock
Indeed I did get Pulock, who provides a safe offensive floor if not the same points upside that some others bring. That's okay though because I have enough scoring at this point. His shots, hits, +/-, and a little contribution on the PP were what I needed most.

Got very busy here and kind of just blindly zeroed in on goalies for the next few rounds.

    Round 9 - Jack Campbell
A few more goalies gone, and there really weren't a lot of goalies left that I felt I could ride to a podium finish (needing saves, wins, and a decent GAA from at least two starters/tandems). The wins from Toronto put Campbell at the top of my list of the guys remaining.

    Round 10 - Ilya Samsonov
Considered Mrazek here, but I figured I could wait a bit on him, but I couldn't wait on the last goalie left that I saw in this tier.

    Round 11/12 - Petr Mrazek/Vitek Vanacek
Managed to grab both of my backups to cover my 164 games. Should be enough for top-four finishes in most of the goalie categories in my mind, and getting all four of them after round 8 is huge.

    Round 13 - Vince Dunn
Back to the skaters, and the defencemen were stating to thin out. Dunn has looked great in pre-season with Seattle, and I think with the minutes bump he's in for a very productive year. A bit of a swing without the high floor I like, but at this point in the draft that's fine.

    Round 14 - Justin Faulk
Still looking at defencemen and seeing it dry up a little with a whole ton of similar forwards still on the board. Faulk is streaky, but there weren't any better PPP, shots, hits options left.

    Round 15 - T.J. Oshie
Now it's just time to mine forward value while a few teams are still focused on certain stats or positions. Oshie should have been gone 3-5 rounds ago despite his age. He's a 60-70 point winger that brings all the peripherals.

    Round 16 - Pavel Buchnevich
I got called away and was a little distracted here, so I just went with one of the highest ADPs left on the board. Buch actually has very similar stats/upside as Oshie, but is a fair bit younger. Lots to like there, and helps me fill out RW.

    Round 17 - P.L. Dubois
Needed Cs, and there's some upside here despite the lack of deployment. Getting the other half of last season's trade made me feel better about missing Laine a couple rounds ago.

    Round 18 - Kyle Palmieri
Top line winger with hits, shots and PP time, tough to do better than that at this point. Didn't feel the need to fill out my defence yet.

    Round 19 - Logan Couture
Another guy that probably slipped a little too far. Happy to lap up another C. I was also feeling a little light on PPPs from my last set, so I doubled down on the SJ one at least providing me a few without absolutely killing my +/-. More on that next.

    Round 20 - Erik Karlsson
Hoping for a bit of a rebound here, and there's a lot of upside if the SJ offence can get back on track. Maybe all they need is Kane out of the dressing room. Not a lot of hits either, but I can survive that.

    Round 21 - Alexander Georgiev
Best backup left, and because of injuries or not setting my lineup in time, you need more than just two tandems to hit your max starts. If Igor goes down (it's happened before) then Georgiev is suddenly a huge pick.

    Round 22 - K'Andre Miller
One of my big upside guys for the year. Tons of peripherals, some offensive potential, and going to be playing top-4 minutes.

    Round 23 - Joonas Korpisalo
Either a trade chip, or a spot starter for whenever they play Buffalo/Detroit/etc.

    Round 24 - Craig Smith
Meh, we know what he is. Might be on the wire in a few weeks, but he's not going to hurt me in any category the meantime.

    Round 25 - Phillip Danault
With only one extra forward (I think), I figured I would grab someone to rack up a few peripherals to bank a couple extra games early. I was fading so I didn't look too hard here. Might flip him to the FA pile once I have time to comb through it.

    That's that.
Really happy with the team. Maybe a little light on defence, but I think my Fs and Gs more than make up for it. I think I finish 5th at the lowest, but it'll take some love and care through the season.

    Best of luck to all!

Default Re: Dobber EXPERT Stanley 2021-22

Like P7 stated, getting the short-end of picking at the end of the draft is a bitch when competing against experts. In the past 3 seasons, my draft position has been 12th, 11th, and 8th. It's much better to be the front of wheel than the back of the wheel. And...having to wait 24 turns until your next pick is a lesson in futility when building your queues.

My very loose strategy, based on my draft position, was to focus on grabbing forward value early, snag a few of the top cross-category defensemen, and be opportunistic on when to pull the trigger on goalies (in my mind this meant NOT taking any goalies early but not going the full ZeroG route - a balancing act to be sure). In the end, for me to be competitive in this pool, I need to field a balanced team without punting any cats. When the dust settled at the end of the draft, I was very pleased with my results.

Rounds 1 & 2 (13/14): Panarin LW & Svechnikov LW/RW NOTE: I thought Panarin would be available and he was. While I had other options, I like the combination of category coverage and upside that Svechnikov bring.
    Rounds 3 & 4 (36/37): M. Tkachuk LW/RW & Nurse D NOTE: Getting 2 roto studs is key for my team.
Rounds 5 & 6 (60 & 61): Petry D & Binnington G NOTE: I was hoping to go at least another round before taking a goalie, but if I wanted one of the few workhorse goalies it was now or never. Binnington was the last one remaining, and he provides a solid floor for starts/saves and his GAA should be better with a healthy team in front of him.
    Rounds 7 & 8 (84 & 85): Fiala LW/RW & Schenn C/RW
Rounds 9 & 10 (108 & 109): Jarry G & Petersen G NOTE: Another instance where I wasn't planning on taking goalies but the pickings were getting slim and the likelihood of getting a decent starter with cats that wouldn't hurt me was quickly diminishing. Being able to get two stable/promising starters, combined with my earlier pick of Binnington, also means I don't have to cobble together a platoon of 5 or 6 goalies and eat up my bench space. While I gave up some incremental skater value, positional scarcity won me over and I know I can get value to fill out my remaining skater positions.
    Rounds 11 & 12 (132 & 133): Giroux C/LW & Provorov D
    Rounds 13 & 14 (156 & 157): Bjorkstrand LW/RW & Ellis D
    Rounds 15 & 16 (180 & 181): J. Toews C & Garland LW/RW
    Rounds 17 & 18 (204 & 205): Grzelcyk D & Farabee LW/RW NOTE: I'm really liking my last 6 picks!
Rounds 19 & 20 (228 & 229): Mangiapane LW/RW & Comtois LW/RW NOTE: From this point on, I'm picking skaters with upside or to fill a particular positional need, such as PPP, HIT, etc.
    Rounds 21 & 22 (252 & 253): Drysdale D & Nelson C
    Rounds 23 & 24 (276 & 277): Murphy D & Hayes C (IR)
    Round 25 (300): Coyle C/RW

Again, I HATED my draft position but I believe I put a good effort in getting the most out of the hand I was dealt. I'm pleased with my picks, let's see how this translates over the course of the season. I have flexibility in adding/dropping a few players as well as some trading assets. I also noticed I drafted a majority of dual-eligible players. Note to self: Somehow, I drafted 5 Flyers on my team - let's see how that goes!
C: Schenn, Grioux, Toews, Nelson, Hayes
LW: Panarin, M. Tkachuk, Bjorkstrand, Comtois, Mangiapane
RW: Svechnikov, Fiala, Garland, Farabee, Coyle
D: Nurse, Petry, Provorov, Ellis, Grzelcyk, Murphy, Drysdale
    G: Binnington, Jarry, Petersen

Default Re: Dobber EXPERT Stanley 2021-22

After 4 years in the Pro leagues , two of which I finished third just narrowly missing promotion, I finally won last year and earned a chance to play with some real legends from around here. Should be a fun season.

So I managed to get a little more prep in for this draft than my others. I actually compared the two Dobber Pro conferences draft results to get a good idea of where I would need to target the guys I was looking for. Overall I found this really helped and allowed me to avoid over-reaching for guys and to mine value in later rounds (I'm looking at you Jordan Staal)

    Don’t Panic

    1. (5) Andrei Vasilevskiy (TB - G)
I had figured the big 4 would leave me with Vas here and I'm quite happy to take him at this spot. Honestly 5th may have been my top choice for draft spot because I love Vas but would have been happy if one of McD/Draisatl/Mack/Kucherov fell to me here as well. After those names, I feel like there is a slight drop off to the next Tier.

    2. (20) Sebastian Aho (Car - C)
Strongly debated on drafting Lehner here but couldn't bring myself to go with two goalies in the first two rounds. Love Aho and the Hurricanes this year so I'm happy with this pick.

    3. (29) Brady Tkachuk (Ott - LW)
Lehner still on the board but even with the contract dispute (which I believe will be settled sooner than later) I had to go Tkachuk here. He is a potential first round talent in this league and I can't believe he fell to the third round. If he's back before Halloween, this is a steal. Lehner went with the next pick, which I think is another 3rd round steal.

    4. (44) Frederik Andersen (Car - G)
At this point I was getting excited to potentially draft Point or Pettersson but they went in the 4 picks before me. I still had two of my top tier goalies on the board and since I had drafted Shesterkin in the RHRS, I decided that I would go with Andersen in this one (and try to handcoff Raanta later). I was also anticipating a bit of a goalie run and 4 would come off the board before my next pick.

    5. (53) Mark Scheifele (Wpg - C)
I was starting to think I should target a D at this point as the top shelf had been picked clean and we were getting well into the next tier. But I couldn't pass up Scheifele's value in Round 5. I feel like he will be playing with a lot of fire after being forced to miss the last few games of the playoffs and opening night this year.

    6. (68) Jakob Chychrun (Ari - D)
My queue got picked absolutely clean before this pick but the one that stung the most was Quinn Hughes directly before this pick. Hate to have any Coyotes since we count +/- but Chychrun should provide enough production across other cats to mitigate it. Love the Ullmark pick in this round as well, it may be my black and gold glasses but I think he could have went way earlier in the goalie run.

    7. (77) Thomas Chabot (Ott - D)
Since most teams had 2-3 D at this point, I queued up Krug and Chabot hoping one would make it to me. Would have preferred Torey but may actually come out with the more productive player here. Although having my top two D be from Arizona and Ottawa is a little sketchy.

    8. (92) Thatcher Demko (Van - G)
At this point Demko was one of the last true #1 goalies on a potentially strong team here so I had to snag him. I'm feeling confident enough that if I can snag Halak or Raanta later in the draft that I should be at or near the top of the board in all goalie stats.

    9. (101) Teuvo Teravainen (Car - LW,RW)
This was my first real reach for a guy that I wanted. I may have been able to wait one more round. He went in Round 10 in both Dobber Pro leagues and the RHRS. I didn't want to chance it as he could still be a steal at this point and no one else has my eye more.

    10. (116) Tom Wilson (Was - RW)
Tom Wilson isn't as valuable in leagues that don't count PIMs but I was needing some grit at this point and figured I'd roll the dice. He went a round earlier in the Pro leagues so I figure I'm getting decent value.

    11. (125) Joe Pavelski (Dal - C,RW)
Pavelski has been sliding because of his age but I feel he could be value at this point. I was also trying to make Pengwin7 swear (didn't work although he did comment in the chat). I didn't figure Pavs would slide to my next pick as P7 surely would have used one of his next two picks on him.

    12. (140) Evgeni Malkin (Pit - C)
This may have been a bit of a reach and could bite me a bit if Tkachuk holds out for any amount of time. But if Geno is back before Christmas then I like my value here.

    13. (149) Matt Dumba (Min - D)
D was getting pretty thin at this point and I'm a big Dumba fan. Not that I love my pick here, but I felt better about after watching 7 more Dmen fly off the board before I would get a chance to pick again.

    14. (164) Christian Dvorak (Mon - C,LW)
The Dvorak/Drouin/Anderson line has looked really good in pre-season and I made a point to target them. In hindsight, I should have snagged Morrissey or Trouba since they went with the next two picks and my D is pretty thin so far.

    15. (173) Oliver Ekman-Larsson (Van - D)
Alright, time to seriously target D and I don't really like what is left. I begrudgingly whose +/- cost me a promotion to this league in 2017-18. But he is playing on a much better team with a very good goalie this year so I think OEL could end up out-performing his draft position here. At least that's what I'll keep telling myself.

    16. (188) Keith Yandle (Phi - D)
Ugh... really aren't too many D-men I like left (except for one that is too early to take). Strongly considered Backstrom here but with Malkin on my IR already, I couldn't bring myself to do it. Also love the Brossoit snag two picks later.

    17. (197) Noah Dobson (NYI - D)
Alright, D are getting this and Noah Dobson is one of my absolute favorite players right now. Plus Leddy being gone should open up more opportunity for him. I figure this is a reach but the league chat tells me otherwise. Suddenly feeling a little better about my D after this pick. Hopefully Raanta will fall to my next pick (SPOILER ALERT - he wouldn't)

    18. (212) Jaroslav Halak (Van - G)
F**king temek snags Raanta at the end of Round 17. I decide to not chance letting Halak get away even though I felt this was a little early. But I doubt he makes it back to me. I had wrote down on my spreadsheet to target Jordan Staal at all costs in Round 18 as he was the 56th ranked player in this format last year. But I can't risk not locking up 82 games from one team, so Halak it is. Hopefully Staal will fall to me.

    19. (221) Jordan Staal (Car - C)
My gamble paid off, Staal is criminally underrated at this point in the draft. He went at round 21 & 23 in the Pro leagues but I couldn't see the GMs here letting him fall that far. Was thrilled to snag him with this pick.

    20. (236) Yanni Gourde (Sea - C,RW)
To be honest Gourde hadn't been on my radar at all but I was looking to fill out my wings and saw he had been upgraded to day-to-day. I didn't need another injured player but if he only misses a couple of games, I'm very happy to take a top line C in Round 20.

    21. (245) Evander Kane (SJ - LW,RW)
On a 25-man roster, I have no qualms about using my last 5 picks to throw darts to see what sticks. I'll take a chance on a potential top-50 producer at this point. The investigation should wrap up in the first couple of weeks of the season and if he doesn't play another game, I can drop him for someone off to a hot-start.

    22. (260) Jeff Carter (Pit - C,RW)
Insurance for my earlier Malkin pick. Should provide good early season production.

    23. (269) Jesperi Kotkaniemi (Car - C,LW)
We'll see if the 6-million-dollar man is money in the bank or ends up on the WW early on.

    24. (284) Jonathan Drouin (Mon - C,LW)
See Round 14... mark my words Drouin will be a Masterton candidate this year.

    25. (293) Jaden Schwartz (Sea - LW)
More potential top line talent in the last round of the draft. Sure I'll take it.

All in all this was a great draft fellas! Can't wait to see what the season brings.

And Pengwin7, props to you for letting it out on here man. Many of us are struggling these days. Many of us are feeling broken. But not all of us show it. It takes a real man to let it out. Take your break, try to enjoy the fact that hockey is back and hopefully you'll find your love for it again dude! Was seriously looking forward to your post-mortem on here (really missed it in the RHRS this year). But no need to force it if you're not feeling it. Take care of yourself dude!
    Without me, it's only "aweso".

They all say, wait as long as possible to draft so that you have the most information. Until it's announced on opening day that your number one draft pick has Covid. It's the NHL, they've likely known for weeks. Surprised it wasn't listed as an upper body injury. Then he'd be day-to-day for two months.
