    Default Re: Dobber Entry Patrick

This was a fun draft. I came in with no specific strategy but trying to make sure I didn't punt any category early but open to abandon either hits or +/- if the draft leads me that way. This being my 5th year in Dobber Tiered leagues, I know I've had more success when I manage to get all my goalie starts so I knew I wanted at least one tandem, preferably with a backup I can take very late. Wouldn't mind punting GAA and focus on W and Saves.

    1. (10) Alex Ovechkin (LW): Drafting at 10, I knew I was probably getting either Rantanen, Marchand, Panarin or Ovechkin. I like to target a winger here because unless I get McDavid, Draisaitl or MacKinnon, they're simply more valuable. I actually have Ovie ranked 5th in this format after the afromentioned 3 and Matthews. His goals, shots and hits give me a strong foothold in the categories.

    2. (15) Brad Marchand (LW): Honestly, I was eyeing Crosby and was working on a joke like 'Hey, if this was 2009, I'd be killing you guys!' but Marchand fell to me. Considering Ovie will get me goals but not that many points, I'll take the 100-pt threat in Marchand. He shoots enough and sneaks in a few hits too. His +/- should be strong.

    3. (34) Kirill Kaprizov (LW,RW): I was busy looking at whether JT Miller or Pettersson would fall to me and indeed, Pettersson did but from the corner of my eye, I saw I had one player rated higher left on my board in Kaprizov. This high in the draft, I'll always value offense a lot more than anything else so I'll take the reigning Calder winner. He also shoots a good bunch and should be better for more PP production than last year. Yahoo has me at 3 LWs so far but I know Kaprizov is my first RW.

    4. (39) Tyler Seguin (C,RW): One more reason I didn't go for the centers earlier is because I've been targeting Seguin in drafts. He's been crazily underrated and maybe I could've actually waited until the next round to get him. I have him rated above Miller and Pettersson and way over anyone else left on the board. His dual eligibility is also great. Potential PPG player with close to 300 shots in the 4th round? Hell yeah!

    5. (58) Jeff Petry (D): I'm a Habs fan, so I'm naturally higher on Habs players most years and I have to restrain myself to reach for them or gather too many on my teams. That being said, Petry is a legitimate top 5, top 10 D this year. He's going to get huge minutes and is going to fill up the scoresheet (especially because MTL scorekeepers are notoriously generous). He has no competition for top PP time as well. Felt really good with him as my #1 D.

    6. (63) Jacob Markstrom (G): Vas, Helle, Saros and Markstrom. Those are the only 4 good (Gibson scares me a little too much) volume starters in the NHL right now. Not a big fan of Calgary but their division is weak and they're only a couple years removed from being Western champs so hopefully, they'll capture that magic again. But out of simple volume, Markstrom will give me plenty.

    7. (82) Thatcher Demko (G): I think Halak will get his share of starts but Demko is still the man in Vancouver and I'm a big fan of his. Saw him go earlier in other leagues so since he was still there, I decided to pull the trigger on my second starter. Sparked a little goalie run as Samsonov, Campbell, Sorokin and Jarry all go in the next few picks. Happy with Demko over any of them.

    8. (87) Sam Reinhart (C,RW): I was starting to debate Suzuki and Caufield here. Suzuki went a few picks before and I thought maybe Caufield would last until my next pick (He didn't) so I went with Reinhart. Top line, top PP on a strong team, I think he'll be great. Hopefully he flourishes with better linemates even if he's not THE guy anymore.

    9. (106) Brent Burns (D): Was this a reach? I don't know, the Yahoo rankings sometime confuse me. With shots and hits as categories, Burns should be a fine player. He's still a top PP guy and it's not like San Jose has a ton of other offensive options on the blueline apart from Karlsson. I'm happy with Burns as my #2 D even if his +/- is bad.

    10. (111) Filip Forsberg (LW): I know he'll get hurt and miss a dozen games but this format allows me to replace him rather easily for those 12 games and take advantage of his great shots and hits output. Plenty of LW on this team!

    11. (130) Thomas Chabot (D): I was looking at Giroux and Pulock here but both got picked right before me (sandwiching the Eichel autopick) so I turned around and selected Chabot. Ottawa should be better this year and Chabot is their top dog on D. He'll give me points and PPPs while shooting and hitting a decent amount. +/- hurts again.

    12. (135) Anders Lee (LW): Starting to hit the point of the draft where guys with strong peripherals are still there while others who probably have higher offense outputs are selected. That's why I'm happy with the top of my draft because I feel confident enough in my offense to start grabbing these guys. Lee is a prime example. He's probably a 50-55 points player (I have him for 54) but he's close to 3 shots per game and over a hit a game while a threat for 30 goals. Very valuable in the 12th round.

    13. (154) Carey Price (G): Alright, as I said in the draft chat, this was starting to get a little disrespectful towards Price. I wasn't looking to draft a third goalie this early but guys like Swayman, Blackwood, Petersen and Hart were all drafted and Price was still sitting there? I get it, he's still hurt, he was terrible the last few regular seasons, sure. But his ceiling is much much higher than any of those guys (except maybe Hart) while their floors are all the same (except maybe Swayman). Hell, Kakhonen...Kakhonen went a few picks later! Couldn't pass up the value here as my 3rd goalie.

    14. (159) Brendan Gallagher (RW): Again, Gallagher, on a per-game basis, is a top 60-75 player in this format. At pick 159, he's a no brainer. I understand the concern that his offense might dry up but at this point in the draft, I'll gladly take it.

    15. (178) Dylan Larkin (C): So...I guess I'm punting +/-. After filling up with shooters and bangers like Lee and Gallagher, I'll go with a little more offense potential in Larkin. The Vrana injury definitely hurts alongside the Bertuzzi situation but that only means Larkin will be put forward as the man in Detroit. And the youngsters are looking good in Detroit so maybe they'll help him along.

    16. (183) Oliver Ekman-Larsson (D): Not that excited by this pick but my D rankings are starting to dry up a little so I take a chance on an OEL rebound in Vancouver. At worst, he'll get me hits and shots.

    17. (202) Clayton Keller (LW,RW): Well, definitely punting +/- now. The Arizona offense is going to suck but Keller should get something around 60 points, right? Plus, he shoots a decent amount and should get PPPs because...well who else will play on the PP in Arizona? Dual wing eligibility is fun as well.

    18. (207) Rickard Rakell (LW,RW): It's been a few years since Rakell has been strong in fantasy but it's also been a few years since he's had a center like Zegras. Big shooter, strong hitter again. And at this point, I'm playing golf with the +/-.

    19. (226) Filip Hronek (D): This one probably hurts the most because I wanted Yandle so bad. I'm fine with Hronek but he's been the definition of forgettable in my mind. Yandle would've given me an edge on PPPs and plays for a better team. Oh well, Hronek should get between 35 to 40 points and around two shots per game while also being a sneaky decent hitter.

    20. (231) Jordan Staal (C): At this point, I realize, surprisingly, that I only have three centers on this team. Usually the easiest position to fill and I only have three? Who's my next ranked C? Jordan Staal? Meh...how long left until I pick? 30 seconds? Whoops, Staal it is, I guess. If I had more time, probably would've checked if Zegras had been picked because he would've been my pick.

    21. (250) Mario Ferraro (D): Somehow, I have two Sharks D? Ferraro is a banger type and will be waiver wired at some point I guess but he'll give me an edge in hits early.

    22. (255) Rasmus Sandin (D): Wasn't he the Leafs top PP D at some point last year? Do they revisit that? Glad to stash him on my bench for now.

    23. (274) Jake Allen (G): I was eyeing Halak for most of the draft, thinking he was the backup I'd target since I don't trust Vladar and Allen should be picked by this point but he's still there so, go Habs I guess. I really didn't think I'd end up with 4 Habs and if I did, probably not with the Habs goalie but for some reason, their value seemed to be way down in this particular draft so I'm happy with them. Of course, at first, I was hoping Zegras would fall to me since I finally realized he was still available but no such luck.

    24. (279) Yegor Sharangovich (LW,RW): With no Zegras, I go hunting for upside and Sharangovich could be a top-line, top PP player for the Devils this year. Devils players usually underwhelm when they're hyped but as a flier here, I'm happy.

    25. (298) Alex Newhook (C): After taking a quick look at Calder odds, I see Byfield and Newhook are the only decent ones available still. Quick look at line combos and I see Newhook as the #3C while Byfield is in and out of the lineup in LA. Newhook it is. Half-hour later, Byfield is injured. Weird how that happens sometimes.

Overall, I'm very happy with this draft. If I managed to snag Yandle and Zegras, I would be ecstatic but you rarely get all the bounces in a fantasy draft. I'm clearly way behind in +/- but with a strong chance to contend in every other category.

    Good luck everyone!

That's quite the draft recap. Kudos to you for taking the time to write that out!!! Here's my version of it.

After having a few minutes during the day yesterday to get on to Yahoo and look up the league settings, I was able to start putting together a draft list. I entered about 100 names into Yahoo's pre-draft rankings just in case I could not make the start of the draft. About 9:30pm, I was able to pull out my phone and start getting ready for the draft. I pulled up my FHG rankings and started looking at them. Then about 20 minutes later, I logged onto Yahoo 10 minutes before the draft was to start to make sure everything was working properly. Then I realized that the draft started at 9 and we were already in the 14th round. A quick panic and time to check my roster before my next pick:

    Round 1 (8) - Connor Hellebuyck
    Round 2 (17) - Alex Debrincat
    Round 3 (32) - JT Miller
    Round 4 (41) - Dougie Hamilton
    Round 5 (56) - Taylor Hall
    Round 6 (65) - Tyler Toffoli
    Round 7 (80) - Jakob Chychrun
    Round 8 (89) - Tristan Jarry
    Round 9 (104) - Jesse Puljujarvi
    Round 10 (113) - Josh Norris
    Round 11 (128) - Jack Eichel
    Round 12 (137) - Tomas Hertl
    Round 13 (152) - Bo Horvat

OK...so I'm set in net with Hellebuyck and Jarry. Not exactly my draft style but can't complain as I'm quite high on both of them. I am very happy to have drafted my biggest target this year in Jesse Puljujarvi (who is now practicing with Draisaitl and McDavid). My roster shows that I am full on C/LW but only have 1 RW and 2 D so I need to target those 2 positions soon.

Round 14 (161) - Mark Giordano - Getting a true #1 dman in the 14th round is a great thing. I think he's going to have a resurgent year and should be motivated going from team captain to exposed in the waiver draft.
Round 15 (176) - Jeff Carter - with Crosby and Malkin out, Carter's a #1 center and I still think he can play. He's definitely going to get shots and PPP.
Round 16 (185) - Colton Parayko - this was probably a reach as Justin Faulk was still available but he's a solid top 4 dman who should contribute in all stats
Round 17 (200) - Kasperi Kapanen - he was great last year and is another year older. He's also likely going to play with Carter to start the year so might as well load up.
Round 18 (209) - Jack Roslovic - I've been a fan of his for a long time and he has the potential to get to 60+ points
Round 19 (224) - Nino Niederreiter - Carolina should be a great team again and he has the skills to play with anyone
Round 20 (233) - Elvis Merzlikins - His contract says he's the number 1. Korpisalo is likely traded at the deadline (or this week to Colorado!). This pick should help be a top team in all the goalie categories.
Round 21 (248) - Bowen Byram - I still need 2 more dmen to fill out my roster and Byram is the most talented guy I can find. It may be a year too early for him but he has high end potential in all of our categories.
Round 22 (257) - Dmitry Orlov - I still want to draft 2 more dman and Orlov is a Carlsson injury away from PP1 with Ovechkin. He also fills the stat categories quite nicely.
Round 23 ( 272) - Boone Jenner - My team is short on hits and Boone does that as good as anyone. He also has scored 30 goals in a season previously. More roster flexibility as well with his multi-position.
Round 24 (281) - Jaden Schwartz - I have been a big fan for a long time. He's also a 1st line winger which is a steal in the 24th round.
Round 25 (296) - Ryan McDonagh - He will definitely help +/- and should help in the other categories as well. He's still a very good dman and Hedman is likely to miss 20 games.

All in all, I am quite happy with how my team turned out. I have 3 starting goalies including arguably the best goalie in a league that counts saves. I'm a little short up the middle until Eichel returns (if he does) but if comes back, it will be a big injection into my lineup for the end of season run.

Following my painful relegation from the Pro league right behind Nico last year I came in prepared and determined. I used a number of different sources to compile a tiered list with an emphasis on advanced stats and some sound VORP numbers. Suck it McGuire. The one odd thing being that every time we hit a mid point of goalies taken in one of my goalie tiers I would determine to take one next - only to have them all go before my next pick with the worst being Mrazek taken just 4 or 5 spots ahead of me. So I'd flex to other positions. So really I'm exploring the space on the whole "zero goalie" thing...

I was in the 9th spot of the draft. Last year I selected Laine and Pettersson within the first three rounds - which is a big reason why I ended up near the bottom. I was hoping for more reliability and more well rounded players in my first few picks. I think I did that.

rd 1 Mikko Rantanen (Col - RW)
rd 2 Brady Tkachuk (Ott - LW) - I took him in round 1 last year. Very pleased to get him here. Now sign Brady.
rd 3 Max Pacioretty (VGK - LW)
rd 4 Mark Stone (VGK - RW)
    rd 5 Zach Hyman (Edm - LW,RW)
    rd 6 Neal Pionk (Wpg - D)
    rd 7 Seth Jones (Chi - D)
    rd 8 Bryan Rust (Pit - LW,RW)
rd 9 William Nylander (Tor - LW,RW) - Very surprised to see him here and was thrilled to grab him
rd 10 Andre Burakovsky (Col - LW,RW) - Same as Nylander here too. Great VORP value.
    rd 11 Ryan Pulock (NYI - D)
rd 12 Mikhail Sergachev (TB - D) - My biggest VORP score of the day here in the 12th.
    rd 13 Nazem Kadri (Col - C)
rd 14 Devon Toews (Col - D) - I was busy agonizing over goalie options so this was a last second pick...not sure on it.
rd 15 Anton Khudobin (Dal - G) - I decided I needed to go early in the next tier to avoid losing out completely again.
    rd 16 Pavel Francouz (Col - G) - Annnndd....he's hurt. Crap.
rd 17 Noah Hanifin (Cgy - D) - Love this
rd 18 Joel Eriksson Ek (Min - C) - And so began my run on middling Centers. I traded him for Norris just now.
    rd 19 Brock Nelson (NYI - C)
    rd 20 Christian Dvorak (Mon - C,LW)
rd 21 Alexander Romanov (Mon - D) - One of my favorite potential value picks
rd 22 Chris Driedger (Sea - G) - My wife distracted me and he was left in my queue. Meh.
rd 23 Antti Raanta (Car - G) - Was targeting him as a late round sleeper all along. Yahtzee.
rd 24 Shane Pinto (Ott - C) - His preseason play and White's injury made him worth a flyer.
rd 25 Pavel Zacha (NJ - C,LW) - Erroneous draft pick. Thought I clicked on the name of the player I wanted and missed...we'll see how the first FAA bid goes.

Great draft re-cap!! And awesome Value in MArchand here.

Would be awesome if there was a comparison to see where players went higher or lower than average across all 4 Entry, 2 Pro and 1 Expert Leagues!

Yep, I traded my 10th round pick for a guy picked 8 rounds later. That's what you call great asset management.

Hey - you have to do what you feel is right. I took a long look before accepting- usage and team fortunes (and Brady Tkachuk signing) will factor heavily into which one ends up the better own. And the plus/minus makes me a little nervous.
