    Default Zegras/Barzal REP

I’ve got Zegras, but the idea of Barzal for him was just brought up to me. It was not an official offer, but I thought I’d check in here to see what you all think.

My thoughts are that Zegras is going to be an elite talent once Anaheim starts to take shape. Barzal is already an elite talent but on a D first team. I also don’t see that system changing until Trotz or Barzal are not there anymore. So my question is, would the wait for Zegras to fully break out be worth not doing this deal? Or is Barzal the obvious choice?

That’s a hard choice because Barzal is more proven but not to the point where you’d think Zegras carries a significant risk of not attaining that level (around 70 points).

Looking at your roster, I would personally hold and let those prospects grow together. The homerun potential is real with Zegras and you’re not one Barzal type of player close to winning.

I'll take Barzal this year and next. After that it depends on what Anaheim does. I have a feeling that his point potential is going to stagnate slightly as they retool their roster and start turning over the old dirt for some fresh talent. I think he'll be capped at around 55-60 until Anaheim comes out of the fog whereas Barzal could easily get you 75.

This is a tough one.. but it looks like you have seriously committed to a full-out rebuild. I mean, your team is ridiculously young and years away from competing. So, I think you might as well wait it out with Zegras' upside.

Zegras shouldn’t be stifled with a defense first type of system, plus I think he hits his offensive stride really soon. Barzal is in a defensive system which limits him big time. Plus he doesn’t play with top end talent. I go with Zegras especially if a rebuild is in process. Good luck.

I'm going to disagree with the majority here. Barzal is a star, and is only 24 years old. Even in a defensive system that has limited his ceiling in recent years, he's still a star. And at some point, Barzal or Trotz will move on and Barzal will show his real ceiling. Zegras is a talented young player with big potential. But I think at best he'll be as good as Barzal. I take star player over a potential star any day of the week.

I almost always prefer the proven commodity, rather than the shiny new toy. However, in the case of your team, it's a full out rebuild so you might as well keep Zegras. Eventually, when you're competing, it'll be because you have some elite players, and I just don't see Barzal as an elite player. A great player, in a great, team, system, but I see him as a nice, 70 point guy. Let's see if Zegras can end up as better than a 70 point player.

If only Doug Weight was still coaching and Tavares was still there and getting the tougher matchups. Hahaha

I’ll turn the Barzal idea down. Thanks and rep where I could!

To me Barzal’s ceiling is same as floor for Zegras… given your young team I’m holding since you won’t compete this year
