Which Tandem to Own

Wondering which tandem would be better for the upcoming year? 8 Team Yahoo Head to Head league. One year league. W, GAA, SV, SV%, SHO.

Toronton or Boston? I want to lock up one of the tandems and think I can should be able to do so late in the draft. Going to draft goalies late so I won't have any high end starters. Likely goalies still available when I start drafting goalies will be:

Toronto tandem
Boston tandem
Washington tandem
Saros
Markstrom
Jarry
Hart
Bobrovsky

My plan will be to draft one tandem out of either Toronto or Boston so I can lock up all their games and then grab one or two of the remaining goalies. Let me know which tandem I should target and how you would rank the remaining goalies?

I’d grab the Leaf tandem and then in a 1 year league I’d go with Bob. Feel like he’s going to bounce back big. Just a hunch.

I'd prefer the Boston tandem, as I trust them with the ratios more than Toronto, and it's easier to work from good ratios to gain volume stats than the reverse. You could also try the Florida tandem.

For the extra goalie, I'd avoid Jarry, as Pittsburgh goalies seem to put up awful tarts too often for my liking.

Thanks for the responses. I was doing a few mock drafts and it seems more difficult to secure the Toronto tandem. Mrazek is going much higher than Swayman. I am now thinking about possibly going Ullmark for his expected high ratios, then securing the Florida tandem. I should be able to get all 3 very late in the draft and it should supply solid value. The nice thing about an 8 team league is that there is usually some good options on the waiver wire if I need to reset course and pickup a goalie who is on an amazing run. I'd grab the Florida tandem over any of those options. Florida is going to be really good this year and Bob is being undervalued (rightfully) because he's had two straight mediocre seasons. Knight may be going a little too high but that's an OK price to pay for a strong tandem.

With GAA and Sv%, I'd target a Boston goalie (preferably Swayman) if you want a third.

I had a draft last night where I was able to get the Toronto tandem and them Markstrom and Smith. Will this be good enough to win with? Sounds like Campbell and Mrazek will both be doing a 50/50 split so I should be able to get some decent value from them. Markstrom was rated #2 in this league from FHG. Wasn't crazy about Smith but to get a starting goalie with my last pick seems like good value. Am I crazy or can I good run with this goaltending?

I’m not sure why the Colorado tandem is not mentioned. That’s the premium two-some of the league in my opinion.

Yes but how many open start spots are there for each position. Roster size?

More than likely I wouldn't even suggest taking a tandem for this league.

The Colorado tandem would be great to own but that would require drafting Kuemper early. My strategy is to draft goalies late.

In regards to roster size it is 2C, 2LW, 2RW, 4D, 2 Utility, 2 Goalie and 6 bench.

I like the idea of going tandem as you can maximize the starts of a really good team. Is that a good idea or should I just draft the best goalies available?

I'd roster 2 goalies max, the rest skaters. Goalies with good ratios - you'll be looking to only try and steal GAA and SV% cat. Rough guess I'd be looking at Saros and Ullmark. If you believe Bobrovsky will return to form than he could be an option, but he's a no thank you for me.

In matchups vs teams with only two goalies as well, If you have a chance at winning W or Saves you can look to quick stream a goalie for a game to try and steal one of those categories. 8 team league likely will be a goalie like that available.

Since goalies are so fickle, you could still draft 3 and see how things play out. Week 1 is pretty volatile.

Draft the best goalies available. The backup on most teams will have tough b2B assignments and won't put up great numbers even if they win.

Which tandem, as OP mentions, is all about "which can you GET?".
Yes, there's obviously best teams (COL, VGK, TB)... but it's going to be hard to get those starters unless you draft early.

In an 8-team league... there's only 16G in starting spots, so really only 16 teams being drafted.
So you can "value draft" a good split pairing later in draft.

Both TOR & BOS qualify.

TOR is going to be tough to draft, both Campbell and Mrazek are too far up the pre-rank Yahoo board (if its Yahoo)... and so those goalies will be thrust in front of drafters eyes.
FLA is a great tandem as they are also expected to be an incredible team... but those guys, too... are way high up the draft board, making it hard to get both. If you get only one... brutal.


The value draft tandem, IMO, is Carolina - Andersen/Raanta. The team will be good to great... get Andersen, late-draft Raanta.
Boston too, if possible. IIRC Swayman is a bit high on the board - can't recall where Ullmark is.

BOS, CAR... I think, are the teams where the tandem can be drafted latest.
Those are my faves this year.

EDM is best late, late tandem... Smith and Koskinen.
Especially since I can't see people touching Koskinen - but a GM should definitely want both.
But, as I recall, Mike Smith is WAY down the draft board.
