    Default Giroux v Wheeler

    Hi All,
Down to the short strokes before getting under our cap. I have both Giroux and Wheeler at 8.25 and I can't keep both. If you had to pick, who would you keep? Claude is younger, but a UFA next year (might he sign for less?). Blake has a few years left, but probably declining productivity (well declines for both I suspect). Any advice?

    Thanks

I'd keep Giroux. At this point, Wheeler is getting pretty close to being a power-play specialist; his 5x5 play is deteriorating. He's a big body hitter whose body is breaking down. Giroux, being younger and not having gone through the physical battles to the degree that Wheeler has, is the safer option.

Hands down Giroux. Slightly younger and the contract situation could well play out better for you after this season. Hell, even if Giroux has a poor season that probably just makes the contract situation even more favourable. Probably pretty similar scoring totals until one (or both) hit the cliff.

Blake Wheeler is only older by a year and a half and has a much better PPG and is in a great situation in Winnipeg. Seriously, taking Claude Giroux because he's a 1 year and a half younger despite the fact that Wheeler's last two seasons look like this compared to Giroux's? WOW!

    Blake Wheeler

    20/21: 46 points in 50 GP = 75 points prorated over 82 games.
19/20: 65 points in 71 GP = 75 points prorated over 82 games. (had 22 points in his first 12 games playing out of his natural position on wing at 2LC, but had 53 points in his last 50 games).

    Last 3 years over 82 games: 82-23-59-82, -6, 59 PIMs, 99 hits, 54 blocked shots.

    Claude Giroux

    20/21: 43 points in 54 GP = 65 points prorated over 82 games.
    19/20: 53 points in 69 GP = 63 points prorated over 82 games.

    Last 3 years over 82 games: 82-24-49-73, +5, 26 PIMs, 42 hits, 16 blocked shots.

Wheeler is locked onto that top line with Scheifele and on the top PP1. A team that is known for its offence. Clearly you can see Wheeler is the better choice and a difference of year-and-a-half in age doesn't change that. Wheeler could still retire after Giroux.

Yes I see your point. There is one other possibility for me know that just opened up through a trade I made. I could drop Monahan and keep both Giroux and Wheeler and that would still keep me under the cap.

Well, as much as I hate to admit it, Eli has a point here. While you would think a guy 35 years old was going to slow down big time, Wheeler is sure not showing any significant signs of that. Wheeler has been an absolute iron man throughout his career, I'm not so sure the big body taking a beating theory applies here. I also like Wheelers situation in Winnipeg a bit more than I like Giroux's in Philly. I think it's status quo this year, and maybe even next and that means Wheeler for me as well.

Since I picked up Konecny who has center eligibility in our league, should I keep both Giroux and Wheeler and drop Monahan instead?

I would definitely do that. I've never been a huge fan of Monahan, I was impressed by his one pt/g season but the rest of his numbers suggest he's more like a 60pt player which I think you can also get from Konecny.

I watched quite a bit of Philly last year and Giroux looked like half the player he was when he put up 100 points.. Wheeler was a very late bloomer and doesn't seem to be slowing down that much. He also has very talented line-mates and team. Plus, I mean, he bought someone's groceries recently. Doesn't it just warm your heart?

and I agree with Random-d, I'm not a fan of Monahan's game.. he plays an incredibly predictable style and I think teams have figured out how to stop him. Tkachuk, Lindholm and Gaudreau seems to be the top line now too!

That seems like the right thing to do.

Yes, I'd do that. I'm guessing that Giroux also has C eligibility, so I would've done that even without Konecny.

Yes, drop Monahan like a hot potato. His driver in Gaudreau is off his line...... Monny will lose a lot of production because of that.
