Default Trading away Seth Jones for Bowen Byram

In my 24 team dynasty league, I have been offered Bowen Byram for Seth Jones. Daily rosters of 3C 5W, 3F, 6D, 2G plus 3 reserves that don't dress. We can also have up to 27 players in the minors. Players with less than 100 NHL games are eligible to move up and down from the minors daily.

    A - 2
    +/- - 1
    Short Handed Point - 2
    PPP - 1
    Block - 0.5
    Hit - 0.5
    SOG - 0.5
    FOW - 0.1

Byram has a $3.4M contract for this year and next while Jones is at $5.4 this year and $9.5M starting next season. My goal is to win the championship this year after losing in the semi-finals last year. I am about $2M over the cap right now with Yanni Gourde on my IR since he's out until who knows when.

    Should I accept the offer?

    My roster:
    C: P Bergeron, R Faksa, P Zacha, T Jost, R Asplund, Y Gourde (IR)
    W: Jamie Benn, G Landeskog, B Marchand, A Watson, A Kempe, T Wilson, B Tanev
D: Jones, Burns, McAvoy, Giordano, Cernak, Oleksiak, K Russell, J Braun
    G: doesn't matter

Farm who might play this season:
    F: M Bunting, N Gregor, C Bunnaman, O Steen, M Stephens, W Lockwood, L Reichel, R Zohorna
    D: M Anderson, L Carlsson, M Kierstead, B Menell, B Pasichnuk, J Keane, E Zamula

If your primary goal is to win this year, you have to stick with Jones. The chances are pretty good that this coming year will be Jones' best fantasy year of his career, given the PP1 cast and the strong likelihood that Chicago will do everything to make Jones look good. There's no real route for Byram to have impact on a contending team in a 24 team/starting 6D.

Jones is your #1 dman and you will need him if you want to win.

I am sticking with Jones pretty easily. As Feenom mentions, Jones is your best D man and is a good bet to put up a career season. If you want to trade him in for a younger model his value will likely never be higher than it will in early 2022.

You're over the cap, so you need to do something. Jones should be really good this year, so that will hurt.

The question is really whether Jones can he outproduce Byram and another D from your minors in the same slot? Byram will hit that 100 games in the 81st game he plays this year, so you get a free roster spot for every day off he has - which could make up most of the difference. If you had say, Jani Hakanpaa I'd do this deal in a millisecond as you'd likely cobble together better production and be set better for next year. If one of the top 3 D in Colorado gets hurt, Byram is helped a lot.

I'd probably do this deal, and try to snag a guy to pair with Byram who will play a lot and is low in total games.

If aiming to win this year you have to keep Jones.

For contending, i would definitely keep Jones. Even if i was in a rebuild, i would ask more than Byram for him. He’s in a great situation in Chicago.

I see two ways to go here. "Preferably" you find another way to get under the cap rather than making this deal. If you need to move Jones, I want a whole lot more coming back. As a last point and circling back on the "preferred" option, I'd try and do something with Burns or Giordano rather than part company with Jones for a poor return. You've got back up in Menell, Zamula and Andersson, if worse comes to worse, drop Burns or Giordano if you can't trade them and roll one of these guys??
