Default Werenski 6 Years at 9.583M AAV

If this is true, this contract will not age well…

Jeez, that's a lot of money! I like Werenski a lot but I'm not sure he's worth that much.

I like the term though, 6 years instead of 8 makes the AAV much easier to swallow.

It's overpayment to show they can re-sign a top player, which they couldn't the past two years.

That's hazard pay for staying in Columbus through this rebuild. Too much, but he is a good young dman.

Good for Werenski for getting this, but his production has not justified this. Like others have said, I think it’s an incentive to have him stay through the rebuild after Jones told them he’s not resigning.

the 'please dont leave us' tax sure is expensive by about 2-2.5m per season. i get overpaying though, who else is that money gonna go to? might as well insulate the remaining dmen on your team

During the time that Jones and Werenski played together last season, they were on the ice for 22 goals for and 23 goals against. (I believe this is 5v5). And somehow that is worth a combined $19,000,000 per year.

    Dude got PAID!

Very un-Columbus like to shell out the big money, especially without a fight. They are usually frugal when it comes to paying their players so nice to see them finally open their purse strings a little. They must think a lot of Werenski to shell out this type of contract after watching them basically trade away players instead of paying them (Nash, RyJo, Jones).

Just to put this into perspective, Werenski is now the third-highest paid dman and I believe the 15th-highest paid player.

This reminds me of a Raptors/Blue Jays type of overpayment to a player to get them to stay on a bad team in a city they don't want to be in.

He was already on PP1 and playing over 24 mins per game so I am not sure we'll see much change in his numbers.

A lot of his success will be tied to bounce back for the forwards. If Domi can get back to a better scoring pace. If Laine can get back to a 40-goal pace. If Voracek can have one of those 80-point seasons he has once every few years
