This deal pretty much confirms that Francis blew the expansion draft, and may have simply been the wrong hire.

He was unwilling to take or avoid players to pick up second round picks, and then did that very thing.
Dreidger was signed as the starting goalie, and now he's clearly not. They could've gotten, say Vatrano and a 2nd.

The point of them selecting Price and trading him back to Habs was for Seattle to retain salary. Salary retention is not allowed, but trade backsies is.

hard to disagree. alex wennberg, jaden schwartz and phillip grubauer is what you use ~15m of your cap space on? just sad really.

They could've picked somebody from Florida, and then signed Dreidger.

Insert other teams and names as you like.

I didnt think this was allowed but whatever , they get a second rounder for VV who they dont need anymore and Grubauer withhout giving up any assets for .

wennberg is a bit high at 4.5 but pickings were slim in the expansion draft for affordable centers . I felt they should have taken Ryjo who would have given them a centerman to give Beniers some insulation (maybe poile could have retained 1 mil )

Note 1 on Vanecek. I do think this 2nd rounder has to count as something Francis got for a keen expansion pick.
Note 2 on Vanecek. I wonder if this is leverage against whatever money demands Samsonov is making... probably worth the pick for WAS to say "Hey... you don't like our offer, we'll go get our other goalie from last year - he was juuuuuuust fine."

First off, they are totally within their rights to trade a player back after the expansion draft. Invictus is correct when he says they are not allowed to retain salary in a return trade.

As far as the trade goes, the way I understand it from Francis talking, he wasnt expecting Grubauer to make it to UFA and was happy to go into the season with Dreidger and Vanacek as his two goalies but once Grubauer became available he got involved. Listening to XM Sirius NHL last night, Pagnotta was saying that Washington reached out to Seattle after the Grubauer deal and asked if Vanacek was available and the deal was done. This was not planned prior to the expansion draft (trading Vanacek back) to the best of my knowledge gained from listening to the pundits.
