He's going to be a very expensive 3C in a year or two once Byfield pushes him down. I assume they will deal some of their C depth (Turcotte/Vilardi??)

So I'm guessing this is a C2 for 2yrs (OP C2), and then C3 for 2yrs (very OP C3), then a barf contract for 2yrs?

I would be surprised he gets on PP1. I heard Danault talking to the L.A media that he was never on the PP in Montreal ( which is true ) and that the Kings told him they want to give him a more offensive role... so maybe PP2. I don’t see him produce lots of PP points personally. He’s a really hard worker but he’s not that creative for the PP.

His production is masked by the fact he isn't a PP guy. Which is fine.
He dominates the protection aspect. A 3rd line being able to actually effectively shut down a top line is huge.

Well worth the contract. Team fit is slightly off...

Last year - Jean-Gabriel Pageau signed 6 years 5million with NYI.. a year later: "Lou's a genius, great signing, worth every penny" - 3rd line Center.

This year - Phillip Danault signs 6 year 5.5million with LA... ^comments^...

This is a compete now - while the kids mature - for an aging Kopitar & Doughty deal

He'll slide into a #3C in a couple years when Byfield/Turcotte are ready. Others will move to the wing or be traded for other needed assets.

maybe we re-visit in a year. before trashing this contract. Pageau seems the perfect comparison in terms of AAV/term/value to team

Agree on the contract. I just don't think LA is in a position to try and compete (for the Cup) this year.
But they gave up nothing for him so why not? Didn't needed that cap.

I love Danault... but I'm not sure I love the fit here.
Can't say I really like this player/team fit.

For their sake I hope the salary cap is close to $100 million by then.

    BUMP.
In team Off/Def/SV challenge ongoing, it was brought up about team defense (Shots Against).

LA finished 23rd of 31 teams in 2020-21 in shots against per game.
LA finished 2nd of 32 teams in 2021-22 in shots against per game.

Some could speculate on why the team improved so much... I danault what to tell you... looks like it was a good fit for Phil & LA.
