The Oilers are going to spend something like $13.5M to surround Connor McDavid with Duncan Keith, Tyson Barrie, and Cody Ceci.

This is not confirmed yet, is it?

How much worse can Holland make the Oilers? It would be way too late to fire Holland if he signs Barrie and trades Bear away for pennies on the dollar.

I'd be very happy if he signs for only three years.

Im of two minds on Tyson Barrie. Clearly he is as good as it gets when it comes to offensive Dmen in the league. Other than his burp in Toronto, he's been nothing but productive in the offensive end during his career. That being said, in the defensive end, he's a gong show. This signing only slows down the development of Bouchard and doesn't fix the big hole left behind by Adam Larsson leaving.

This tells me that Ken Holland is not ready to hand the keys to the PP car to Evan Bouchard at this point in time, or for the short term future. It also tells me there's other moves to be made. There's rumors of Ethan Bear going out the door. I am the first to admit that I am NOT an Ethan Bear fan although the twitterverse seems to love this kid. I still havent seen it so if he does get moved, and it brings back a solid piece to help somewhere else (G?, top six W?, defensive D?), I am good with it.

People are sure ready to throw Ken Holland under the bus for his moves so far, but the proof will be on the ice, not in the off-season on paper. I'll throw him under the bus if/when the results aren't there after they actually play the game. Others need to keep that in mind when criticizing.

I dont hate that deal for Edmonton if that's what it ends up being. Sounds like Holland won out keeping the term down to three years. The dominos that fall from it is what I am curious watching.

That's a pretty good term and cap hit. Only a $750K raise from last year, I figured Barrie could have gotten more elsewhere

Guess not since he chose to stay in Edmonton. This was a terrible waste of cap space when the Oilers already had 2 better RD on the team in Bear and Bouchard. Some fun numbers for those that like this deal:

    From Jonathan Willis on Twitter:

McDavid with Barrie, last 47 games:
    53 CF%, 52 SF%, 56 GF%, 51 xGF%

McDavid without Barrie, last 47 games:
    56 CF%, 59 SF%, 59 GF%, 62 xGF%

Pick your metric. The five-man unit was a failure. The approach will have to change.

LMAO love this. Always good when you can sign a player that actively makes your best player worse by any metric.
