Ya, but it's Ovi! As he inches closer and closer to the goal record there's going to be more and more buzz around him and the team. You don't want a guy like that to end up wearing another teams jersey. It's a lot of money, but I think he's worth it.

Guy is simply built different. As far as I'm concerned he's probably the only player in the league that I would never count out until the day he retires. This generation's Jagr.

Bit of a thought here, dunno if this is what actually happened but:
    - Ovi wants to get that record. He needs 33g/yr to get it.
    - Washington would give Ovi whatever deal he wants really
    - Ovi needs icetime to get that record. He signs for 9.5mill it is a "paycut" but he gets paid enough where he gets ice time.

    He needs 164g to tie.

yea true - but now it’s about personal again and not about team championship. No more cups for Ovy

Wow. Well - I mean, he can go after that record...
And - if there is ONE thing that can sell tickets for the Capitals, regardless of team performance, it'll be Ovechkin chasing the goals record.
I've always been a bit against it... but he's the greatest goal-scorer of this era... if he gets it, great.

It's one thing for OV's body to hold up... but WAS doesn't have much in the pipeline - so the support will go down.
I'd estimate that Washington has about two years left in the playoffs before several teams in the East rise up and pull them down (NYR, PHI, OTT, NJ).

Still... to have this guy get to 2025 - his whole 20+yr career with the Capitals.
That kind of iconic player... to hold him with the same franchise - is worth the price.

    Well done, WAS.

I see this deal as a thank you from the Washington Capitals to the most important player in their history. Yes, it gives him a chance at the record if he keeps up the production. Yes it may be a little long and expensive. But it allows the Caps to reward and keep a player who has done so much and who still definitely puts butts in the seats. Class move by the Caps here and it's good to see loyalty matters.

I'm a little concerned about a weakening supporting cast...

All he needs is a good centre that will be able to help get him the puck.

Connor McMichael - 'An intelligent, all-around centre who broke out for 2019-2020 in such a way that he looks to be a top-line NHL talent. His shot and vision has hit another level since he was drafted.'

Hendrix Lapierre - 'A slick playmaker with a terrific feel for adjusting the speed of the game to suit his desires.'

    Alexei Protas - '
Protas is a massive centre that NHL teams covet, who is great at creating plays off the rush or on the powerplay and has improved his skating and shot.'

I think their centre depth is just fine after Backstrom and Kuznetsov, for having a playmaker to help get OVY goals!
