Another player several mil higher than McKinnon - that's weird. Not that I think it affects the team any.
But I see McKinnon as worth/value several mil higher than Makar when he re-signs. Probably be a 9.5m contract?

He's only played two shortened seasons while getting paid more than players like Stamkos, Crosby, Draisaitl.

Could of signed a lower AAV deal for several years while he 'proves it' allowing more cap room to build I contender while McKinnon is also on a team friendly deal. In several years he's not going to command much more than 9m anyway.

I don’t understand this take at all. Makar is one of the best young D in the league if not the best. All those other guys signed their deals a while ago and it’s a constant in the league that top end salaries go up. So really not a valid comparison.

He's only played 19 games above 1 full season. That's it. Now he get's a 9m deal.

If you want to win a cup or two part of that is to load up the skill on your team. To do that you need to play the cap. Avs have an unique time frame with McKinnon value.
If he takes a 3 year deal at say 6m. That's 3m savings. Add McKinnon savings of say 4m.
You can now replace a 1m player on your team with an 8m player. Hmm Viktor Hedman. Heard of him? Pretty good! (Not that they could actually fetch him).

I'm not saying it's a bad deal. Don't think it's a bargain though. I don't care if it costs me an extra 500k-1m down the line to do this deal again at 9.5m-10m

While I do wonder if Colorado could have bargained Makar down slightly, he's still probably going to earn that AAV. Also not to be forgotten is the threat of offer sheets. Colorado would obviously match anything, but perhaps it's better to just get the deal done and not have to worry about it, especially with other major negotiations with Landeskog and Grubauer, or their replacements, coming up.

Landy is looking very likely that he is gone.
With the cap freeze I'm betting offer sheets will be almost non existent.

I don't see the Avs having trouble re-signing him after 2-3 years. I just see a plethora of points on keeping his AAV low for the next few years. Then after winning a cup or two giving him his payday.
