Default Montreal drafts Logan Mailloux in 1st round

31st overall selection in the draft.

Mailloux renounced himself from the draft after "paying a fine for an offense of a sexual nature in Sweden last year". However, you cannot officially withdraw from the NHL draft so he was technically still eligible for anyone to select.

Was it awkward? Was there a statement about his renouncing? Im not watching.

I mean, if you're gonna draft him anyways... so be it, but why use a 1st round pick on a guy pretty much every team has way down their list? Surely there were other players who are just as good you could have taken at 31.

Not proud of my Habs tonight.

I was watching it in French and all the analysts/commentators were absolutely speachless. Very very awkward moment.

Statement or no, they shouldn't have drafted him, even less with a 1st round pick.

I mean true. Ranked 27 NA skater, there were probably other options. Save him for later that's just effective drafting. EDIT: He was ranked 12th before the situation happened. Maybe he was best available? I don't pay too close attention to know?

He was going to get picked regardless. You can't just denounce yourself and expect it to happen.

Sounds like a guy who isn't going to fully enjoy getting drafted this year. Good !!! He shouldn't have done what he did, and now that's one of the repercussions. He doesn't just get to lay it off until next year for him to fully enjoy. Live with it.

He's not exactly a cautionary tale anymore. Guy fux up and drops out of draft. Gets selected higher than anyone imagined. Cant wait to see the movie.

    Just to recap...

Mark Bergevin was with the Blackhawks in 2010.
Mark Bergevin showed interest in Slava Voynov.
    Mark Bergevin hired Sean Burke.
Mark Bergevin expressed interest in Tony DeAngelo.
Mark Bergevin drafted Logan Mailloux and defended it by saying, "on the hockey side, he was the best pick"

But hockey culture is not a problem. This is an embarrassment.

Imagine drafting the kid and telling your PR team to start writing a letter defending your choice instead of why your excited on this day.

Just such a bad decision here.

I'm fine with picking him, just not in round 1. He shouldn't be given the feeling of being selected first round. Other rounds don't really matter.

You're fine with drafting him? Wow.

    Do you have a daughter?

As a Habs fan, I'm very disappointed. There was absolutely no need for this pick, at that time or at all really. I understand the kid may be talented and that there is value to pick him there strictly in a hockey sense. But for a GM that always seems to prioritize character, this was a dumb move. Not only you pick a kid that had no business being picked right now but you also rob him of the chance to write his own story back.

Terrible, terrible pick and it makes me wonder even more if Bergevin has already decided to move on from the Habs after his contract expires at the end of the year. Maybe all these moves that were regarded as bold for the expansion draft were more likely due to a GM who wasn't looking to extend his contract and save his job.

Anyway, nothing redeemable about this pick.
